Beaumaris Castle: Wales & Ireland 2016 - Episode 4
Beaumaris is one of King Edward I 'Iron Ring of Castles' built after 1282 to subdue the Welsh. Because my After Cilmeri series rewrites history, none of my books are set here. However, Beaumaris was built over the site of a prosperous Welsh town and abbey, Llanfaes, where my Lion of Wales series begins, and where Joan, wife to Llywelyn Fawr, and Elinor, wife to Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, were buried.
I write historical fantasy, romance, and suspense. My books are available at all retailers (Amazon link:

Beaumaris castle and town on Anglesey
Beaumaris in Anglesey during the summer heatwave we are having. Anglesey is such a stunning place, absolutely delightful and very varied with idyllic seaside villages and golden sands. Packed full of history, architecture and people from all walks of life a truly great British place to stay and visit.
Castell Biwmares a'r dre yn Sir Fon yn ystod yr tywydd da rydym nin gael am y tro. Gobeithio my fydd yn aros tran diwedd y flwyddyn :)
Beaumaris was originally a Viking settlement known as Porth y Wygyr (Port of the Vikings),[citation needed] but the town itself began its development in 1295 when Edward I of England, having conquered Wales, commissioned the building of Beaumaris Castle as part of a chain of fortifications around the North Wales coast (others include Conwy, Caernarfon and Harlech).
The castle was built on a marsh and that is where it found its name: the French builders called it beaux marais which translates as beautiful marshes.

We take a day trip to Beaumaris Castle, the Greatest Castle Never Built! We stop off at Red Wharf Bay.
Beaumaris was the last of a strategic network of castles built by King Edward I. The castle was never completed, due to a shortage of money and a change in the political landscape.

Beaumaris Castle
Beaumaris Castle, begun in 1295, was the last and largest of the castles to be built by King Edward I in Wales. Raised on an entirely new site, without earlier buildings to fetter its designer's creative genius, it is possibly the most sophisticated example of medieval military architecture in Britain.
A castle was almost certainly planned when King Edward visited Anglesey in 1283 and designated the Welsh town of Llanfaes to be its seat of government. At the time, resources were already stretched and any such scheme was postponed. Then, in 1294-95, the Welsh rose in revolt under Madog ap Llywelyn. The rebels were crushed after an arduous winter campaign, and the decision was taken to proceed with a new castle in April 1295. The extent of English power is demonstrated by the fact that the entire native population of Llanfaes was forced to move to a newly established settlement, named Newborough. The castle itself was begun on the fair marsh, and was given the Norman-French name Beau Mareys. Building progressed at an astonishing speed, with some 2,600 men engaged in the work during the first year.
Despite being planned on such a grand scale, by 1298 the funds for building Beaumaris had dried up. The king was increasingly involved with works in Gascony and Scotland. Although there were minor building works in later times, the castle is in many ways a blueprint which was never fully realized.

Beaumaris Castle Visualisation
Beaumaris Castle was King Edwards I's last stronghold built in Wales. Circa 1295-1330. However, Edwards financial priority was to fund the war in Scotland, therefore Beaumaris Castle was never finished. This version is an artists impression of how it could have looked like, had it been finished. Comments welcome.
A Glimpse of Beaumaris || Wales, UK
A darling little seaside village off the coast of North Wales; Beaumaris is full of flowers, castles, and... maybe human bones? I don't think I want to know...
It's my first day in my UK trip and I'm visiting my Dad and his bae, Bridget (aka BAE). While the grown-ups were off doing work, I took a quick trip to the Isle of Anglesey to explore the old city of Beaumaris. The main attraction in Beaumaris is the castle constructed by King Edward I in 1295 as a part of his campaign to conquer the north of Wales in 1282. Construction took nearly 3 decades due to lack of funds followed by the Scottish uprising. Construction came to a halt in 1330 and it was never completed.
The rest of the village is filled with small shops, brightly colored houses, Welsh cakes, fantastic pubs (check out The Bull), and a quaint beach where you can sit, relax, and watch the sail boats drift by.

BEAUMARIS CASTLE. ANGLESEY. NORTH WALES. AUGUST 2017.
Beaumaris Castle. Anglesey. North Wales.
THE KING WHO ALMOST BUILT THIS CASTLE WAS Edward I (17/18 June 1239 – 7 July 1307), also known as Edward Longshanks and the Hammer of the Scots (Latin: Malleus Scotorum), was King of England from 1272 to 1307.
Beaumaris Castle (Welsh: Castell Biwmares), located in the town of the same name on the Isle of Anglesey in Wales, was built as part of Edward I's campaign to conquer the north of Wales after 1282. Plans were probably first made to construct the castle in 1284, but this was delayed due to lack of funds and work only began in 1295 following the Madog ap Llywelyn uprising. A substantial workforce was employed in the initial years under the direction of James of St George. Edward's invasion of Scotland soon diverted funding from the project, however, and work stopped, only recommencing after an invasion scare in 1306. When work finally ceased around 1330 a total of £15,000 had been spent, a huge sum for the period, but the castle remained incomplete.
Beaumaris Castle was taken by Welsh forces in 1403 during the rebellion of Owain Glyndwr, but was recaptured by royal forces in 1405. Following the outbreak of the English Civil War in 1642, the castle was held by forces loyal to Charles I, holding out until 1646 when it surrendered to the Parliamentary armies. Despite forming part of a local royalist rebellion in 1648 the castle escaped slighting and was garrisoned by Parliament, but fell into ruin around 1660, eventually forming part of a local stately home and park in the 19th century. In the 21st century the ruined castle is managed by Cadw as a tourist attraction.
