Hiking the Castle | Discovering Alberta's new provincial park in the Canadian Rockies
The Canadian Rockies in Alberta are a haven for hikers. So when an entirely new region for hiking in Alberta is discovered, it’s a big deal. It’s like mountain Christmas, with backpacks.
That was the case for photographer A.V. Wakefield (@viktorianorth on Instagram), a dedicated Alberta hiker, when she connected with Heather Davis in the brand new Castle Provincial Park. Wakefield has hiked all through the Canadian Rockies, but she had spent little time in the Castle region. Until it’s formation as a park in 2017, it just wasn’t on her radar.
Davis, however, has spent years living in the region, and now
guides hikers through Castle and nearby Crowsnest Pass through her company Uplift Adventures.
Davis agreed to show Wakefield around the new park, and introduced her (and her dog Metsa) to a whole new region to be discovered.

Weekend Away | Beaver Mines Lake and Waterton
A super sick camping trip away sadly. But enjoy !
Foamcanos - Near Pincher Creek, Alberta
My Father-in-law was feeding cows near the creek when he came across these foam towers forming in the creek. This is a natural phenomena I have never seen before. I believe the foam is caused by the air mixing with the water. My 9 year old son named them Foamcanos.
A Wonderful World - Table Mountain July 24,2016
Here is a compilation of the footage I took during my hike up Table Mountain.
The trailhead is located within the Beaver Mines Lake Campground.
Of all the hikes I have been on this summer, this one tops the list. Absolutely breathtaking.
Watch and you'll see what I mean.

Like Drivelapse? Friend it:
This drive begins in Elkford, British Columbia, and heads south on Highway 43 to Sparwood, then east on Crowsnest Highway 3, over the pass and into Alberta. Instead of returning directly to Pincher Creek, I took a detour down to Beauvais Lake Provincial Park, to see the frozen lake.

You Will Never Believe What Stole Our Fish! - Beaver Mines & Beauvais Lake
AMAZING August Long Weekend spent at Beaver Mines and Beauvais Lake. It was a little bit chilly in the mornings, but made for awesome fishing! We used gang trolls and wedding rings which we usually use to fish for Kokanee, however it worked surprisingly well for trout. Would highly recommend- the fishing was Hot! (However all relatively small)...
We camped at Beauvais Lake, recharged our motor battery, and hit the lake again early the next morning. Between the two lakes we preferred Beaver Mines. It had more of a mountain feel, where as Beauvais Lake was quite busy and had cabins lining the water.
Altogether we couldn't have shared a better long weekend together fishing...
Until Next Time.... HAPPY FISHING!!

Font Mountain - Castle Wildland Provincial Park (AB) / Flathead-Sage Area (BC)
2019-07-12 - Font Mountain
Castle Wildland Provincial Park (AB)
Flathead-Sage Area (SE Kootenay Rockies, BC)
Poking up out of the continental divide is a big chunk of craggy limestone named Font Mt. Though not very impressive from afar the mountain becomes more impressive the closer you get with its massive crevasses, limestone buttresses, stramatolite fossil formations and its tall walls of nearly vertical rock. In fact, the walls were so imposing that the only scrambling route that I could see is the east slope.
The easiest way to get to a Font trailhead is to park at the Red Rock Canyon parking lot in Waterton Lakes NP and walk the Snowshoe Trail to Snowshoe Cabin (8.5 Km) and then going up the Lost Lake trail and to the continental divide (2 Km) and then north along the Divide (approx. 5 Km). However, due to the closure of the Red Rock Parkway (still under repair from damages that occurred during the 2017 Kenow Wildfire) we decided to approach from the B.C. side. Fortunately, the Flathead-Sage Forest Service Road or FSR brings one right below Font and is a much shorter hike, although it takes a lot of driving to get there (about 4 hrs. from Lethbridge).
We didn't have any difficulties or obstacles on Font itself. The only times that we really questioned our sanity (which usually happens a few times on any summit hike) was in starting out through the bushwhack and then trying to find the initially faint trail in the basin that sits between Mt. Matkin and La Coulotte Ridge. Luckily, we got through both with only minor scratches and bouts of swearing. haha
