Beaver Creek Conservation Area
We took a hike through Beaver Creek Conservation Area, located a short distance from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. There are 4 trails that go through the Area, although one was closed due to damage to a bridge that is built over the creek. It was humid during our hike, so we completed the shorter trail.

Canoeing South Saskatchewan River - Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
The canoe is a Canadian wilderness icon. It leaves no trace of its passage through the wilds, but it has left an indelible impression on the Canadian psyche. Ancient aboriginals, early voyageurs and today's canoeists - all have been moved by the canoe - physically and spiritually. With this in mind, it was only fitting that the GCAT crew spend an afternoon out on a river in a canoe.
We hooked up with outdoor enthusiast and owner of CanoeSki Discovery, Cliff Speer, for a paddle down the South Saskatchewan river. Cliff has been canoeing these waters for over 30 years and is a firm believer that canoeing heightens the ecological senses. He says it inspires a desire to care for the wild places that only a canoe can access. At CanoeSki, they follow the environmental credo of respecting the earth in all their activities. This includes applying conservation principles to all aspects of the operation, practicing minimum impact camping, and contributing to local conservation efforts.
During our paddle we not only enjoyed fantastic autumn weather, but we were fortunate to catch some of the annual migration of Canada geese, snow geese, and sandhill cranes. One of the great things about canoeing is that without a motor you can blend in with the environment and get the opportunity to truly be at one with nature.
If you ever get to Saskatoon and want to give canoeing a try, call Cliff and he'll be happy to introduce you to one of Canada's favourite outdoor pastimes.

#Saskatoon is a city in central #Saskatchewan #Canada. It is located along the Trans-Canada Yellowhead Highway, and has served as the cultural and economic hub of central Saskatchewan.
Saskatoon is home to the University of Saskatchewan, the Meewasin Valley Authority which protects the South Saskatchewan River and provides for the city's popular riverbank park spaces, and Wanuskewin Heritage Park, a National Historic Site of Canada and UNESCO World Heritage applicant representing 6,000 years of First Nations history. The Rural Municipality of Corman Park No. 344, the most populous rural municipality in Saskatchewan, surrounds the city and contains many of the developments associated with it, including Wanuskewin. Saskatoon is named after the saskatoon berry which is native to the region, and is itself derived from the Cree misâskwatômina. The city has a significant Indigenous population and several urban Reserves. The city has nine river crossings and is nicknamed Paris of the Prairies and Bridge City.
Historic neighbourhoods of Saskatoon include Nutana and Riversdale, which were separate towns before amalgamating with the town of Saskatoon and incorporating as a city in 1906. Nutana, Riversdale, their historic main streets of Broadway Avenue and 20th Street, as well as the downtown core and other central neighbourhoods are seeing significant reinvestment and redevelopment. Sutherland, the rail town annexed by the city in 1956 that lies beyond the University lands, is now another historic neighbourhood.

South Saskatchewan River & Saskatoon Skyline
This is the highest the river has been in over 100 years, so I decided to go down there and investigate. Not only is it much higher than normal, but it's also much more fierce! This is caused by both the flooding in southern Alberta, and extra water being let out of the Gardiner Dam.

Rolling in icy water on the South Saskatchewan River
Practising my roll in less than ideal conditions, March 31st, 2012. The South Saskatchewan River was still partially covered in ice but I was dressed in a dry suit with insulating layers underneath. As seen in the video, my head was a tad cold (that's an understatement) under the thin neoprene hood, which seemed to simply trap the ice-cold water against my brain.
A Look at Saskatchewan's New Grassland Conservation Area
Saskatchewan nature lovers now have another spot to enjoy the province's grasslands and rolling hills. The Wideview Complex covers twelve hundred hectares, near Grasslands National Park. It's home to a number of endangered or threatened species.

Christmas Eve Paddle on the South Saskatchewan River
A quick slideshow putting together photos taken during a paddle on Christmas Eve, taking advantage of a warm winter day. The photos are from a point & shoot camera mounted on the stern of my kayak. We were paddling on the South Saskatchewan River in Saskatoon, SK, Canada, December 24th, 2014.
We were dressed for the water with multiple insulating layers under drysuits, neoprene hoods, and pogies (me) or gloves (Jim). The only part of us exposed to the cold water was our faces. Both of us are very experienced in paddling cold water, and preforming rescues around ice. I practised my rolling near the end.
Air temperature was about -5°C, there was no wind to speak of at water level, there was a moderate current, overcast skies and very briefly some snow once we were off of the water.
The camera is a Pentax Optio WG-1 on a tripod strapped to the back deck to get a near water level point of view.
