Why I Choose to Practice Rural Medicine: Dr. Nicole Cardinal
“Throughout my whole university career, I think the job that I wanted to do was rural,” says Dr. Nicole Cardinal. “And coming back to Saddle Lake knowing that they do need staff to work in the Health Centre, knowing that we’re always struggling rurally to have physicians … I think this has always been a job for me.”
Dr. Cardinal is a family physician practicing on the Saddle Lake Cree Nation in Alberta, Canada. Originally from the community, Dr. Cardinal came back home after spending some time in Edmonton, living and study at the University of Alberta.
While there are both positives and negatives to being in the city, she admits to preferring “the slow pace of the rural life. I like to go through Tim Horton’s and be the only one in line.”
“My time is the thing that I value most,” says Dr. Cardinal. “If I can get most out of my time to be with my family, then that’s where I like being.”
Working on a rural reserve is not without its challenges as there are issues with overcrowding, limited financial resources, and the necessity to travel to access certain services. Yet, for Dr. Cardinal, it remains a great place to life and work.
She says that, “a lot of people have misconceptions about reserves, that they’re scary places to be, that we’re not good facilities to be working in. But our facility here is a great example of what things can look like: we have lab, we have an ultrasound tech, we have a dentist, a pharmacy, and nurses.”
“The reason that we’re here is that we enjoy being here,” concludes Dr. Cardinal. “We like the community and we like the work that we do.”
This is part of an interview with RPAP during a 2016 Medical Skills Event. The Alberta Rural Physician Action Plan supports Alberta's rural practitioners, their families and communities in improving the quality of rural health care by offering comprehensive, integrated initiatives to enhance rural medical services, education, attraction, recruitment, and retention. Alberta Family Physicians of the Year - 2011
Leonard Len Wade, MD, CCFP
Alberta
In recognition of his unsurpassed commitment to his patients, their families, and his community, Dr. Len Wade, a rural physician from Vulcan, Alberta, is acknowledged as an outstanding family medicine mentor and leader.
After completing his medical degree at the University of Calgary, Dr. Wade received his Certification in family medicine from the College of Family Physicians of Canada in 1987. In addition to managing a busy rural family practice, Dr. Wade serves as Chief of Staff at the Vulcan Community Health Centre and was Medical Director of the Vulcan and District EMS services for over 20 years.
Dr. Wade was an early participant in his local Primary Care Network, helping to promote preventive medicine, increase access for patients, and improve coordinated patient care in Alberta. As a mentor to medical students and residents, he demonstrates that the needs of the patient must come first. He is quick to accommodate patients with special needs, providing home visits for those who are not well enough to travel.
An active voice in the Vulcan community, Dr. Wade participates in several medical committees including the Vulcan and County Recruitment and Retention Committee. He is also the Vulcan representative for the Medical Advisory Committee for the Department of Rural Medicine at Alberta Health Services.
Dr. Wade is a vocal proponent for healthy living. He recently joined a humanitarian organization in Kenya. He travels there each fall to provide health care in remote, underserviced community clinics.
Dr. Wade enjoys spending time with his wife, Barbara, and their three children—Katie, Brendan, and David. He keeps fit through biking, skiing, and mountaineering.

Homestead Days
A lantern slide show originally created by W. D. Albright of the Beaverlodge Research Station in 1937. Narration telling Albright's story was added by South Peace Regional Archives.
A small portion of the script - The Beaverlodge Research Station was founded by William Donald Albright, who began conducting tests in 1914. He spent many years touring the Peace Country with his collection of lantern slides and giving talks on a variety of topics. Many of the photographs were taken and hand-tinted by Albright himself. The slides were preserved at the Research station for many years before being taken to the South Peace Centennial Museum in Beaverlodge, then to South Peace Regional Archives, where they now have a permanent home.
In honour of the 100th Anniversary of Albright's first experiments, the Archives has recreated this lantern slide presentation, originally entitled Homestead Days using a slide list dated November 4, 1937. Although some of the slides and the lecture notes are missing, the captions are original and we hope you will get a feel for the work of the Research Station and the passion and pride of W. D. Albright at the potential of the Peace River Country and what had already been accomplished.
William Donald Albright was born in South Cayuga, Haldimand County, Ontario on August 15, 1881, to Josiah and Sarah Albright. The Albright family moved to a Beamsville fruit farm when William was 13. He attended two years of high school, one year junior Matriculation, and took a two-year associate course at Ontario Agricultural College, Guelph, winning the Governor-General's prize for general proficiency.
