SECURING BECCLES LIDO'S FUTURE (2019)
The Final Phase - Refurbish, Upgrade and Re-line Main Pool
A short video about Beccles Lido and our 2019 project for which we are seeking Grant Funding - for more information, how you can help or to make a donation please visit:
In 2008 Waveney District Council closed the open-air swimming pool in Beccles, following years of neglect. After a long campaign to save it, community charity Beccles Lido Limited was given the opportunity to purchase and save it. It was in considerable disrepair. We were realistic and started raising funds to save the derelict site, patching up the pool, including installing a liner. A volunteer army helped us re-open in 2010. Beccles Lido has gone on to huge success, year-on-year profit and unprecedented visitor numbers averaging 40,000 each 15 week summer season. We have learned so much! The pool operates, but many original features no longer work, needing replacement or refurbishment and bringing up-to-date: the poorly installed end-of-life liner leaks and needs replacing; a skimmer system will improve its operation; under-water lighting will enhance safety, allowing opening after dark; the redundant surface scum drain troughs must be removed, and new fixtures and fittings meeting modern guidelines installed.
Before we re-opened in 2018 we replaced the 20 year old end-of-life toilets; and refurbished, upgraded and re-lined the toddler pools.
After we closed we resurfaced the approach road/car park, also erecting a new fence and improving the drainage; and we upgraded the plantroom with new pumps and electrics.
Refurbishing, upgrading and re-lining the main pool will SECURE BECCLES LIDO’S FUTURE!

Sites in Beccles
Only 100 miles from London, 33 miles from Ipswich and 16 from Norfolk, Beccles is a well-situated market town found in Suffolk. With a population of just over 10,000 people, the town was granted its charter by Elizabeth I back in 1584.
Dominating the skyline of this small town is the 16th Century tower known as the Beccles Bell Tower. 97ft tall and built in an imoposing Perpendicular Gothic style which was popular in England suring the Medieval time, it is unmissable when you vsit the town.

Beccles in 1990
In 1990 parts of Beccles looked very different.
Allan Adams unearthed this footage, shot by his late father, which provides a great insight into what the town looked like nearly 30 years ago.
