Beckov Castle

Beckov Castle (Slovak: Beckovský hrad or Beckov; Hungarian: Beckói vár) is a castle in ruins located near the village of Beckov in Nové Mesto nad Váhom District, Trenčín Region, western Slovakia.

It is a natural cultural monument and its present appearance is the result of renovations in the last quarter of the twentieth century and since 2002.

History:
Great Moravia–1388
The Beckov Cliff is a klippe of the Hronic nappe well exposed by the Váh River.[2] The castle is situated on the cliff near the river, and was used as a strategic outpost in Great Moravia. A stone castle was built there to protect the borders of the Kingdom of Hungary, probably in the middle of the 13th century. The castle became property of Matthew III Csák at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries and was fortified under his rule. After his death in 1321, the castle was administered by castellans. Louis I of Hungary gave the castle to Miklós Bánffy in 1379 as a reward for his service in battles in the Balkans and Italy.
1388–1437
In 1388, the castle was given by Sigismund, King of Hungary to Stibor of Stiboricz of the Clan of Ostoja, a Lord of Polish origin. Stibor was one of king's most influential advisors and in control of significant part of Northern Hungary (today, Slovakia). Of 31 Castles that was in possession of Stibor, he chose Beckov as his home, giving the Castle special care. He rebuilt the castle into his family seat in the Gothic style. Artists from Venetia, Poland, Germany and Bohemia was working on to make Beckov an outstanding place. Stibor also built a chapel with splendid sculpture decorations and paintings including sculpture of Black Madona which was considered as one of the most beautiful in Europe at that time. In entrance to the chapel, there was a family coat of arms made of stone.[4]

After Stibor's death in 1414, the castle was inherited by his son, Stibor Stiboric of Beckov. Because Stibor Stiboric of Beckov did not have a son, he bequeathed the property to his daughter Katarína (Katherine). However, the royal council decided that she would receive only the customary one fourth of her father's property paid out in cash. The castle was given to Pál Bánffy by Sigismund in 1437, one day before Sigismund's death, probably under the condition that he would marry Katarína, which was fulfilled.
1437–1729
After the Battle of Mohács in 1526, where the Kingdom of Hungary was defeated by the Ottoman Empire, the Bánffy family rebuilt the castle into a Renaissance fortress and noble seat. One of the Bánffys, János Bánffy, was killed fighting against the Turks in 1595. The castle was successfully defended against a Tatar siege in 1599. The Bánffy family owned the castle until 1646, when its last member, Kristóf Bánffy, died.
Following the death of Kristóf Bánffy, Beckov castle was gradually turned into a prison and barracks. In 1729, a fire destroyed the interior and roofs of the castle and turned it into ruins.

Pro vystavění hradu Beckova bylo vybráno přes 60 m vysoké samostatné skalní bradlo. Výzkumem bylo dokázáno, že tato dominanta, čnící vysoko nad záplavové území široké nivy řeky Váhu, byla využita již na přelomu letopočtu. Intenzivní osídlení hradního bradla lze datovat do 9. století, kdy zde vzniklo velkomoravské hradiště. To lze snad ztotožnit z hradem „Blundus“ v tzv. Anonymově kronice. Tato kronika zmiňuje osídlení hradu již před příchodem starých Maďarů do Karpatské kotliny. Právě Maďaři hrad obsadili a pojmenovali názvem Bolondóc. Významnost hradu se projevila i na zdejším umístění sídla pohraniční župy. Významný růst důležitosti hradu vyvrcholil ve 12. století, kdy zde byl vystavěn kamenný hrad. Do té doby se dá mluvit pouze o lehčím opevnění. Vlastníkem Beckova se stal uherský král, který díky němu upevňoval své postavení v kraji. Na počátku 14. století získal hrad do svého držení válečník Matúš Čák zvaný Trenčianský. Za něj došlo k vylepšení opevnění hradu. Po jeho smrti v r. 1321 se hrad vrátil do královských rukou. Roku 1388 král hrad prodává původně polskému šlechtici Ctiboru ze Stibořic, který zbohatnul z odměn za své zásluhy a oddanost uherskému králi Zikmundovi. Ctibor postupně získal na dvacítku hradů v Pováží a sám se tituloval jako „pán celého Pováží“. Právě Beckov si zvolil za svůj sídelní hrad a to se projevilo i na reprezentativních přestavbách, které zcela změnily původní siluetu starého hradu. Celkově se za rodu Stiborských stal Beckov jedním z nejhodnotnějších a nejvýstavnějších sídel počátku 15. století na území střední Evropy. Sňatkovou politikou se hrad dostal po smrti Ctibora mladšího v r. 1434 do rukou rodu Bánffyů, za nichž hrad prošel postupnou modernizací v duchu nastoupivší renesance. Současně byla posílena i obranyschopnost hradu, což se projevilo při odražení náporu Turků v r. 1599. Ti tehdy vypálili pouze městečko pod hradem. Po vymření rodu Bánffyů po meči na konci 16. století se hrad rozdělil mezi vícero dědiců, což negativně přispělo k jeho chátrání. Ještě na konci 17. století byly opraveny hradní střechy. Konec života hradu znamenal velký požár městečka v r. 1729, který se nešťastně přenesl i na hrad a ten již nebyl obnoven.
Ještě na konci 19. století byly na hradě velké plochy stěn s ornamentální a figurální výzdobou, kvůli jejichž ochraně byla alespoň v kapli zřízena provizorní střecha. Avšak i ta vzala časem za své.
Na sklonku 70. let 20. století byla rozsáhlá zřícenina zachráněna dlouhodobou památkovou konzervací, která však ne vždy citlivě respektuje původní charakter stavby a způsob zdění. Záchraně předcházel v letech 1970–76 komplexní památkový a archeologický výzkum.
Teprve po čtvrt století trvající konzervaci byl hrad opět zpřístupněn veřejnosti.

yes, at the beginning of the trip, we had great fun chasing castles and one of them is this beautiful medieval castle. Much of it is ruined now but we did notice restoration work going on. It's about an hour drive from Bratislava through the back country and again a spectacular view all the way.

Bratislava has some very nice castles and we had fun chasing them.

This is the third episode of the project CASTLE RUN - documentary about slovak castles. The goal of our project is to show the beauty of Slovakia all over the world. Slovakia is the place with many beautiful castles and ruins. That's also the reason why we decided to shoot on them. The full docummentary will be uploaded after all episodes are released. The final cut of the documentary will be with spoken word about the castles's history.

Strečno Castle /Slovakia- part 1

The first recorded mention of the stone castle is from 1316. Later, in charter of Trenčín district administrator from 1358 is an explicit mention about castle and about a toll station collecting a toll for passage over the river Váh under the castle. In this period, the castle was owned by Matthew III Csák.Later, at the beginning of the 15th century, the northern palace, the chapel and 88 meters deep well on the main courtyard were built during the Barbara of Cilli´s ownership.
