Bective Abbey, County Meath, Ireland
The abbey was founded in 1147 by Murchad O'Maeil-Sheachlainn, as a 'daughter house' of Mellifont Abbey. The abbey and its estate lands were confuscated during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1530s, before being rented to Thomas Asgarde, and later purchased by Andrew Wyse in 1552. Around this time the estate lands were surveyed, and recorded at 1580 acres. During the 17th century, the abbey buildings were partially converted for use as a manor house. The site was taken into state care and named a protected structure and National Monument. Bective Abbey was subject to a number of excavations in the early 21st century and made more accessible to visitors around this time

The abbey at Bective was founded in 1147, though much of the remaining ruins date from the 15th century. The abbey sits overlooking the River Boyne, just 15 minutes from Navan in County Meath.
Bective Abbey was Ireland's second Cistercian abbey, established after the success of nearby Mellifont. It was one of the country's most important monastic settlements, as its abbot sat in the Parliament of the Pale. Additionally, Hugh De Lacy was buried there before being moved to Dublin.
The abbey closed after its suppression under Henry VIII and was made into a manor house handed over to civil servants in reward for their loyal work.
Due to its castle-like qualities, the site was also chosen as a location for the 1995 film 'Braveheart'.

----On Location at Bective Abbey, Trim, Ireland 12th Century site!!----
Bective Abbey was a cistercian abbey dating back to 1147AD. The site has since been changed and after the dissolution of the church during Henry the VIII a manor house was built on the site which can be seen on the video. The site is in ruins. You can make out the alterations that were made when the manor house was constructed. It later fell into dissuse and was bought by the office of public works who now maintain the site.
Located in close to Trim Castle. The abbey is closely linked to Mellifont Abbey which we will see soon. Bective at it height include 1530 acres of land.
Mellifont would of been the main abbey connected to the order.
