Bedford Park London, A Brief History
This video is about the History of the first garden suburb, Bedford Park in West London.
Bedford Park was founded in 1875 by Jonathan Carr who bought 24 acres of land near to the new District Line Station at Turnham Green.
Carr was well connected in ‘artistic’ circles, indeed his brother was an art critic and his sister a painter. He knew Edward Godwin who was in the forefront of a design movement known as “arts and crafts”. Godwin designed for Oscar Wilde.
Carr said he wanted “plans of houses a gentleman would be glad to live in…. but the extreme cost of a detached house should be £700”. Godwin cut many corners to reach the price and only a few houses were built before Carr decided he needed a bigger name.
Norman Shaw was another “Arts and Crafts” man and a fan of “Queen Anne’s style”.
Carr then conceived the idea of creating a community for artists and the aesthetic middle class.
Shaw designed the central buildings of the new estate, St Michaels Church, The local Pub and the General Stores.
In marked contrast to later suburbs like Hampstead where pubs were outlawed, the Tabard became a favoured haunt of the artistic class.
The Club was popular, equipped for billiards and reading, lectures and Amateur Dramatics
Camile Pissarro, lived briefly at 62 Bath Road, next to a railway line.
Bedford Park was also home to the Russian Anarchist Sergey Stepniak - he’d assassinated the Czar’s Chief of Police and now lived in leafy Blandford Road. Stepniak met his death in December 1895 in Woodstock Road.
A minimalist “cottage” was designed by one of the high priests of Arts and Crafts movement, Charles Voysey for the artist J W Forster. It cost less than £500.
After the war the suburb decayed.
The local residents formed a campaign in 1963 to protect their suburb and in 1967 300+ buildings were given Grade II protection, the largest block listing at the time.
