The Old Melbourne Gaol is a museum on Russell Street, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It consists of a bluestone building and courtyard, and is located next to the old City Police Watch House and City Courts buildings. It was first constructed starting in 1839, and during its operation as a prison between 1842 and 1929, it held and executed some of Australia's most notorious criminals, including bushranger Ned Kelly and serial killer Frederick Bailey Deeming. In total, 135 people were executed by hanging. Though it was used briefly during World War II, it formally ceased operating as a prison in 1924; with parts of the gaol being incorporated into the RMIT University, and the rest becoming a museum.

Ned Kelly Weekend 2015 - Bank Robbery
With beautiful golden sun rays blanketing the cross-roads of the historic Beechworth Town, the streets became alive with the march of troopers, Kelly sympathizers and market stall holders alike, all awaiting the arrival of the notorious outlaw, Edward 'Ned' Kelly, who was brought forthwith from Melbourne town on a special train last night to face his committal hearing for the murder of Mansfield Police Constable, Thomas Lonnigan, at the infamous shootout at Stringybark Creek in October 1878.
Before the desperado was placed in the dock however, another gang of bushrangers using the distractions of the day and led by the lesser known Captain Red, were successful in a daring heist, robbing the local Bank of their weekly Government deposits. Although the 'Captain' was shot in the leg for his troubles, two of the gang were captured in the process and it is suspected they sacrificed themselves in order for the Captain to getaway with this daring deed to raise funds for Ned Kelly's future pending trial.
