Beehive Geyser, Yellowstone National Park 2015
Nice eruption of Beehive geyser September 4, 2015. When active it erupts once or twice a day for 4 or 5 minutes to a height of 150-200 feet. When the small vent to the right of the Beehive cone shows activity, the Beehive will erupt shortly.
Old Faithful & Beehive Geysers - Yellowstone National Park
This was our first day at Yellowstone National Park and the weather was beautiful. We did the lower loop the first day and the upper loop the second day we were there. There is so much to see and many places to pull of and venture into. I would say you really need more than two days at Yellowstone to see most everything you want without rushing around..
Old Faithful of course was the busiest area we ran into. It was amazing to actually see Old Faithful in person and how the Earth actually changes so drastically from area to area. We got there just in time and as I picked out my spot Old Faithful began erupting within no time (usually every 91 minutes) so I did not have to wait at all to film. The Beehive Geyser was also an incredible sight! We were walking out of the Old Faithful Inn and seen this Bus Driver waving people over to the area of the Beehive Geyser. He said when he see's the little geyser right beside the Beehive spouting off like it was that the Beehive wasn't to far off from erupting. So a bunch of us walked down closer to that area and within minutes sure enough the Beehive went off.. and this Geyser was actually higher and lasted longer than Old Faithful.. The Beehive Geysers interval between eruptions range from 8 hours to one day during the summer. Winter eruptions are very erratic. There are occasions in both summer and winter that there are a series of eruptions that are quite regular. These eruptions have an interval of 10 to 20 hours with longer intervals near the end of the series. As of summer 2009 Beehive was having predictable eruptions every 11 to 14 hrs.
It was a windy day though so for most of the Beehive filming the wind was coming right into the camcorder so the wind noise was quite loud. I ened up using some music during this part of the video unfortunately. I would of liked to of kept the video without music so you could hear the Geyser but it just wasn't meant to be..
The Old Faithful Inn is a hotel located in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, United States, with a clear view of the renowned Old Faithful Geyser. The Inn features a multi-story log lobby, flanked by long frame wings containing guest rooms.
With its spectacular log and limb lobby and massive (500-ton, 85-foot) stone fireplace, the inn is a prime example of the Golden Age of rustic resort architecture, a style which is also known as National Park Service Rustic. It is also unique in that it is one of the few log hotels still standing in the United States. It was the first of the great park lodges of the American west.
Initial construction was carried out over the winter of 1903-1904, largely using locally-obtained materials including lodgepole pine and rhyolite stone. When the Old Faithful Inn first opened in the spring of 1904, it boasted electric lights and steam heat.
The structure is the largest log hotel in the world; possibly even the largest log building in the world. In 2007 the American Institute of Architects conducted a survey to determine the 150 favorite buildings in America; the Old Faithful Inn ranked 36. The Inn, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987, is itself part of the Old Faithful Historic District.

Mud Geyser, Hayden Valley, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, United States, North America
Hayden Valley is a large, sub-alpine valley in Yellowstone National Park straddling the Yellowstone River between Yellowstone Falls and Yellowstone Lake. The valley floor along the river is an ancient lake bed from a time when Yellowstone Lake was much larger. The valley is well known as one of the best locations to view wildlife in Yellowstone. The valley was the natural route to Yellowstone Lake as trappers, explorers and natives made their way up the Yellowstone River. On August 29, 1870 when Henry D. Washburn and Gustavus Cheyney Doane ascended Mount Washburn during the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition, they saw the great expanse of the Hayden Valley between Yellowstone Falls and the lake. In Doane's journal he described the valley as seen from Mount Washburn thus: a grassy valley, branching between low ridges, running from the river toward the center of the basin. A small stream rose in this valley, breaking through the ridges to the west in a deep cañon, and falling into the channel of the Yellowstone, which here bears in a northeast course, flowing in view as far as the confluence of the small stream, thence plunged into the Grand Cañon, and hidden from sight. No falls can be seen, but their location is readily detected by the sudden disappearance of the river; beyond this open valley the basin appears to be filled with a succession of low, converging ridges, heavily timbered, and all of about an equal altitude. To the south appears a broad sheet of water the Yellowstone Lake. Although its clear that the valley is named in honor of Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden and his geological surveys of the Yellowstone region (his 1871 survey led to the creation of the park), there is little definitive evidence as to who actually named the valley. Some credit the Earl of Dunraven, during his visit in 1872, but the name first appeared on maps in 1880 in an annual report from superintendent Philetus Norris. The Hayden valley is approximately 7 miles (11 km) long north to south and 7 miles (11 km) wide east to west and occupies about 50 square miles (130 km2) of the park. It lies mostly the west of the Yellowstone River between Canyon and Yellowstone Lake. The Canyon to Lake section of the Grand Loop Road follows the eastern side of the valley near the river. The geothermal features that are scattered around the valley are not as impressive as those of the large geyser basins, but in many case they were the first to be discovered and described by the early explorers. They include Mud Volcano, Mud Geyser, Sulphur Caldron, and Black Dragon Caldron at the southern end of the valley and Sulphur Spring in the Crater Hills group further north and west of the river. The Hayden Valley is outstanding wildlife habitat and is frequented by buffalo, elk, grizzly bears, coyote and a host of smaller mammals and birds. To protect this habitat and prevent disturbing wildlife, the valley is closed to off-trail foot travel. Two trails make the valley accessible for hikers the Hayden Valley trail and the Mary Mountain trail. The valley trail parallels the river on the eastern side of the valley from Lake to Canyon, while the Mary Mountain trail skirts the northern edge of the valley along Alum Creek on its way to the Canyon-Lake road. All the rivers, creeks and ponds in the valley are closed to fishing.

A geyser is a spring characterized by intermittent discharge of water ejected turbulently and accompanied by steam.
The formation of geysers is due to particular hydrogeological conditions, which exist in only a few places on Earth, so they are a fairly rare phenomenon. Generally all geyser field sites are located near active volcanic areas, and the geyser effect is due to the proximity of magma. Generally, surface water works its way down to an average depth of around 2,000 metres (6,600 ft) where it contacts hot rocks. The resultant boiling of the pressurized water results in the geyser effect of hot water and steam spraying out of the geyser's surface vent (a hydrothermal explosion).
Over one thousand known geysers exist worldwide. At least 1283 geysers have erupted in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, United States, and an average of 465 geysers are active there in a given year A geyser's eruptive activity may change or cease due to ongoing mineral deposition within the geyser plumbing, exchange of functions with nearby hot springs, earthquake influences, and human intervention.
Jet-like eruptions, often referred to as geysers, have been observed on several of the moons of the outer solar system. Due to the low ambient pressures, these eruptions consist of vapor without liquid; they are made more easily visible by particles of dust and ice carried aloft by the gas. Water vapor jets have been observed near the south pole of Saturn's moon Enceladus, while nitrogen eruptions have been observed on Neptune's moon Triton. There are also signs of carbon dioxide eruptions from the southern polar ice cap of Mars. In the latter two cases, instead of being driven by geothermal energy, the eruptions seem to rely on solar heating via a solid-state greenhouse effect.
Yellowstone is the largest geyser locale, containing thousands of hot springs, and approximately 300 to 500 geysers. It is home to half of the world's total number of geysers in its nine geyser basins. It is located mostly in Wyoming, USA, with small portions in Montana and Idaho. Yellowstone includes the world's tallest active geyser (Steamboat Geyser in Norris Geyser Basin), as well as the renowned Old Faithful Geyser, Beehive Geyser, Giantess Geyser, Lion Geyser, Plume Geyser, Aurum Geyser, Castle Geyser, Sawmill Geyser, Grand Geyser, Oblong Geyser, Giant Geyser, Daisy Geyser, Grotto Geyser, Fan & Mortar Geysers, & Riverside Geyser, all in the Upper Geyser Basin which alone contains nearly 180 geysers

Beehive Geyser (2015) (HD)
---------------------
Beehive Geyser (2015)
Geysers are hot springs that episodically erupt columns of water. They occur in few places on Earth. The highest concentration of geysers anywhere is in Yellowstone’s Upper Geyser Basin (northwestern Wyoming, USA).
Beehive Geyser is the tallest regularly-performing geyser in the Geyser Hill Group of Yellowstone's Upper Geyser Basin. Eruption columns are steady, relatively slender, and reach 150 to 200 feet high. In recent years, Beehive Geyser erupts approximately once a day for about five minutes. Eruptions are usually preceded by an eruption from Beehive's Indicator Geyser, located about 7 feet away from the northeastern base of Beehive's cone.
Beehive Geyser's cone is about 4 feet tall and subcylindrical. The vent at the summit is relatively small. The cone itself is composed of geyserite - also called siliceous sinter. Geyserite is a friable to solid chemical sedimentary rock composed of opal (hydrous silica, a.k.a. opaline silica: SiO2·nH2O). It forms by precipitation of hydrous silica from hot spring water. Geyserite is the dominant material at & around Yellowstone hot springs and geysers (the Mammoth Hot Springs area is a major exception to this). The silica in the geyserite is ultimately derived from leaching of subsurface, late Cenozoic-aged rhyolitic rocks by hot and superheated groundwater. Rhyolite is an abundant rock at Yellowstone.
The outer walls of the cyclindrical portion of Beehive's cone are slightly irregular and nondecorated. The summit is mostly covered with nodulose to pustulose geyserite.

Old Faithful Geyser, Yellowstone National Park - HD
Another clip from my coffee fueled craze through Yellowstone National Park.
Old Faithful is a little known geyser in Wyoming. Discovered in 1976 by Nathaniel Langford, it was later named Old Faithful by Henry Washburn as an homage to his lucky dice after having won the water feature in a game of chance. Back then it doubled as a laundry service for the military, but this practice was discontinued after the army deemed it too efficient/productive.
Eruptions are predictable every 90 minutes to within a 10 minute radius year round, except on national holidays when the park shuts down operation to conserve water. The geyser can shoot up to 8400 gallons of water to heights reaching 185 feet. No one knows how many litres or meters it produces and it remains a mystery to this day. The predictable nature of the thermal activity stems from scientists psycho-analysing Old Faithful and concluding it to have Obsessive Compulsive disorder.
Though not the largest or sexiest geyser in the park -that title belongs to Steamboat Geyser- Old Faithful makes up for it with its consistently predictable eruptions & charming personality.
