Tilburg In Your Pocket - Brewery (Abdij Koningshoeven)
If you think that only monks live in silence and spend the whole day praying, take a look at the Trappist farm Onze Lieve Vrouw van Koningshoeven. Here they've been working hard every day brewing one of Europe's best beers since 1884. This is still the most important source of income for the monastery, partially thanks to exports to the United States where the beer is sold under the name of 'Koningshoeven Trappist Ale'. Nine special beers are brewed here under the close supervision of the clergymen themselves. Visitors will get a great impression of the whole brewing process in an audiovisual tour or a proper guided tour of the abbey where 16 monks between the ages of 24 to 81 live and work. Even if you don't like beer, you'll still enjoy a visit, as the peaceful surroundings and the impressive complex with its characteristic towers are certainly worth a look.

The world’s first and only Trappist white ale that continues to ferment slightly after bottling. Brewed using only water, wheat, and hops. No herbs are added. Saphir hops give the ale its citrusy aroma. A real thirst-quencher on a hot summer’s day that also makes for a delicious drink at any other time of the year.

Quadrupel is La Trappe’s heaviest ale with a stunning amber colour. Its warm and intense flavour is rich and finely balanced. Malty sweet, slightly burnt, and pleasantly bitter with a sweet aftertaste. Quadrupel continues to ferment after bottling and offers aromas of banana, almond, vanilla and others.

La Trappe Tripel’s aroma is slightly malty and estery. Despite its full, rich flavour, this out-of-the-ordinary ale still has a light and dry aftertaste with a touch of bitter finesse.

Abbey Quadrupel / Abt
Abt, or quadrupel, is the name given to ultra-strong Trappist and abbey ales. The name Abt was pioneered to describe Westvleteren and the beer that would become St. Bernardus. Quadrupel was pioneered by La Trappe. Abts are the darker of the two, with more rich, deep fruity notes. Quads are paler, with corresponding peachy notes. Neither have much in the way of hop, and both are very strong and malty. Though both are bottle-conditioned, abts trend more towards yeastiness. Alcohol is very high (10+% abv) for both.
-
Abbey Tripel
Like other abbey ales, Tripels are strong, yeasty-malty beers. But they are also pale, and have a notable hop profile. Hop bitterness may be higher than a typical abbey ale, up to 45IBUs. But the finish is where the hops really shine, as tripels should finish fairly dry. Otherwise, maltiness is still essential to the style, and the assertive yeast note typical of all abbey ales will be more apparent in tripels, since they do not have the rich dark malts to distract the palate. Alcohol flavours feature more prominently in Tripels that in just about any other style.

Witbier
Witbier, also known as Belgian White, is a style of Belgian-style wheat beers that are generally pale and opaque with a crisp wheat character and citric refreshment of orange peel and coriander. Ingredients sometimes include oats for smoothness, and other spices such as grains of paradise. Serve with light cheeses or mussels.

Beer From Tap The Dutch Way
A Dutch Pilsener Beer From The Tap
There are three main brewery companies in the Netherlands: Heineken (which also brews Amstel), Grolsch and Bavaria. Belgian breweries also take part in the market. Inbev for example has got Jupiler and the Dutch brands Dommelsch and Oranjeboom on the Dutch market. According to the Centraal Brouwerij Kantoor, Heineken has around fifty percent of the market and the other three fifteen percent each. Between them, the large companies operate eight breweries. In addition to the multinationals, there are five independent lager breweries and around forty five small, new microbreweries and brewpubs. A dozen other companies own no brewing plant themselves and have their beers brewed by third parties in the Netherlands or Belgium. The new breweries mostly brew top-fermenting beers roughly similar to those from Belgium, though there are also examples of British-style ales and traditional lagers. The Netherlands is also home to one of the seven Trappist Breweries, located in Berkel-Enschot. The monks that run the Koningshoeven Brewery brew a beer called La Trappe. Although beer is a popular beverage throughout the country, some provinces or parts of the Netherlands have their own 'distinctive' beer. For example, in the south and southeast of the country bitter beers are popular, like Brand beer. Dommelsch is popular in Noord-Brabant and Grolsch is a big favourite in the eastern
