Beijing's Best Hutong Bars! Tasting Baijiu Cocktails and More! ????
Beijing is one of the busiest cities in the world, famous for its beautiful landmarks and modern high rise buildings, However, the city is also home to a number of little traditional laneways that snake through the capital's back alleys known as hutongs. These little alleyways ooze a secret hipster vibe and are some of the best places to go if you’re looking for a quiet laid-back spot that serves up some high-quality drinks. Join the team as we spend the day getting lost in the many hutongs in search for the Best Hutongs Bars in Beijing. We hit up Capital Spirits in Xinsi Hutong first, one of the first bars in the world dedicated to the hard-hitting Chinese liquor Baijiu. The bartenders help ease you into the liquor by combining it with a delicious range of sweet and fruity mixers. Next up we head to Great Leap Brewing No. 6 in Doujiao Hutong, an institution in Beijing and the first craft brewery to open in the city. Founded by couple Carl Setzer and Liu Fang, we try their special range of beers infused with Chinese history and culture such as the famous Honey Ma Gold. For a more intimate setting, we explore Mai bar, drinking up some of the most delicious drinks in all of Beijing. Afterwards, we take a seat in Eric Liu’s famous Mao Mao Chong for a bite of pizza and a sip of one of his creative twists on classic cocktails. We end the night in one of Beiluogixiang’s many nooks - Nina Bar. There is no better way to end the night than with some mix’n’matched arancini balls, a couple of friends and lots of spritz! It’s all here in our latest episode of Top Picks, our original travel videos series where we list our favourite foods and things to do from all over the world.

Four Americans try Chinese liquor for the first time
What happens when you mix four Americans and three Chinese liquors? To answer that, three CCTV America employees took an an epicurean cocktail tour of three Chinese liquors, guided by bar manager Robin Miller at Casa Luca restaurant. All four were new to the spirits.
It's pretty difficult, if not impossible, to find Chinese wine in America. But what many may not know is the long history of Chinese spirits -- which are quite a bit easier to get in the states.
Photojournalist Joel Witte captured CCTV America staffers Aja Hogg, Matt Simon and Elizabeth Shell as they sampled the new tastes.
They tasted Red Star, Wu Liang Ye and Kao Liang Chiew. Watch their reactions in this video.
Growing thirst for craft beer in Hong Kong
This is a big shop window for Hong Kong's craft beer industry.
The Beertopia festival, in its third year, was created to promote distinctive and independent beers.
This year, the event is showing off more than 400 different brands - including local breweries and guest companies from Japan, Beijing and Denmark.
Hong Kong's market lags far behind that of the US, with only four micro-breweries in operation.
That compares to more than two thousand in America.
Jonathan So, Founder of Beertopia, wants to boost the availability of craft beer in Hong Kong.
It's small, and still pretty niche. Right now I think if you go to New York, where I started drinking craft beer and really discovered it, you'd go to any bar, anywhere in the city, and it seems like they'll have some craft beer, whether it's local beer available on tap, he explains.
In Hong Kong, still I mean, the majority of the beer, and we have 400 beers here, but even then, a lot of these are available online - mostly. Then there's a couple of companies that have done a pretty good job with, getting them into bars and restaurants, but I think they're dominating it as opposed to everyone selling everywhere.
Young Master Ales is one local brewery who has been making a name for itself since winning the Hong Kong Homebrew Competition last year.
Founder Rohit Dugar says the key to making unique craft beer is to be innovative with taste.
Inspired by taste and smell combinations from Asian cuisine, he came up with the Cha Cha Soba Ale, made with buckwheat and matcha green tea powder.
We like to take inspiration from somewhere outside the beer world. You mentioned the soba beer, the inspiration comes from a chilled bowl of cha soba noodles, says Rohit Dugar.
We're trying to recreate that experience in the beer world, where you have something refreshing, earthy and grainy. So we brewed the beer with buckwheat, or soba, and we infused it with a gentle infusion of matcha.
Dugar also believes that Hong Kong could serve as a gateway for introducing craft beer to China, which is largely dominated by commercial beer chains such as Tsing Tao.
I think Hong Kong can play a pivotal role in expanding craft beer in the region, says Rohit Dugar.
It's a great place, it's a cosmopolitan city, there's people from all over the world, different walks of life, so it can really be a centre from where we also serve China and be sort of a leading place and be in the world, be in the map and build a reputation for top-notch quality.
Shiro Yamada, the CEO of Nippon Craft Beer from Japan, says that breweries in Asia tend to make beers that are lighter.
From what I see, I think Asian people prefer lighter taste beer, like pilsner style, or pale ale; while Europeans prefer more like, rich taste beer. I think that's because of the climate partly, he says.
Shiro's brewery is located in Belgium, but the ingredients are all from Japan.
We put special ingredients from Japan. Which are sansho and yuzu. Sansho is more like a green pepper, like Sichuan pepper, and yuzu is like orange, he explains.
With the number of growing craft beer enthusiasts in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Craft Beer Association was created.
Its purpose is to not only support local micro-breweries, but also to introduce more varieties of beer from around the world into the market.
As much as there's craft beer from the States, the Europeans have been doing it for hundreds of years as well. So this new wave that's coming through is all very exciting, says Tony Cooper, Chairperson of the association.
This year's Beertopia event was held 13-15 March 2014 on Hong Kong's seafront.

The Ultimate Local Food in Hong Kong!
Hong Kong has some of the best food scenes in the world. It serves the best Chinese cuisine and is even home to some of the best western style restaurants. If you’re looking for quality Chinese food or Michelin star restaurants Hong Kong is the place to visit. However, most tourists and visitors to Hong Kong don’t experience a type of cuisine known as ‘Hong Kong Style’. Many Hong Kongers who have moved overseas go crazy nostalgic for Hong Kong Style staples like ham and instant noodle broth or the famous spam and egg sandwich. This ‘weird’ blend of Asian and Western cuisine comes from Hong Kong’s mixed past and has truly engrained in Hong Kong culture. The Gweilo meets up with food blogger Yuki to see what all the fuss is about – turns out it’s pretty weird. From noodles drenched in cheese sauce to meat from a can it’s all here in our latest episode of The Gweilo, our original video series where the whitest man alive discovers Asia.

The ULTIMATE Japanese FOOD & DRINK Tour of Shibuya - Izakaya Bar Hopping | Tokyo, Japan
In January of 2019, I had the amazing opportunity to spend twelve days in Japan while working a job for a company there. I had some of the most incredible travel and food experiences of my life during those twelve days, and was lucky enough to immerse myself in traditional Japanese culture and visit some of the country’s most iconic sites. I hope you enjoy watching this Japan series as much as I enjoyed filming it!

On the night of my third day in Tokyo, I set out on an incredible food and drink tour with Magical Trip, a tour service that is available in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hiroshima and takes small groups of tourists on a wide variety of food and cultural tours. Best of all, the tours are led by local guides, so participants get the inside scoop on places known only by locals. I couldn’t wait to get started!
My Film Making Kit ►
My last street food tour of Tokyo began on another freezing night at Shibuya Crossing, the busiest intersection in the world! I met up with my tour guide, Remi, and my fellow tour-goers, and we set off on our Izakaya, or a mixture of restaurants and bars, tour of Shibuya!
At our first place, we started with a wet towel to clean our hands (and in my case, my face) before our meal. Then, we ordered some shochu, a Japanese spirit that’s a lot like vodka. It’s about 25% alcohol and reminded me of rakia. It’s pretty strong!
My first dish was tuna sashimi with shoyu (soy sauce) and wasabi. It was so fresh and fatty. One of the best things about dining in Japan is all of the fresh seafood! Next up was the fried oyster, which was crunchy and buttery and fantastic with the mayo it was served with.
On our way to our next place, we passed by lots of restaurants and stores selling things like shoes, clothing and even lingerie! This area is exactly what you expect to see when you think “Tokyo,” bright lights and a dizzying flurry of activity everywhere you look!
Our next stop was an Izakaya building, where we went up to the third floor and had some sake with ice to start, followed by some wagyu beef that was torched right at our table! I had it with some rice and wasabi. It was so buttery and a little crispy on top from the torch. Fantastic!
Then I had some waygu beef with rice and green onions, which was also amazing! I loved it!
After that, we headed to our third Izakaya, a place called Meat Alley, which offered a wide selection of alcoholic drinks and meat dishes. I started with some plum wine, which tasted like grapefruit juice! I couldn’t believe it was wine, but it was delicious!
After our drinks, we moved on to some karaage, or fried chicken. It was so different, but so amazing! It blows KFC out of the water, for sure! Next I tried some asparagus and mushrooms, which were phenomenal. Then, it was time for bacon! It was super thick and fatty and very flavorful.
I followed the bacon with a super dry, cold sake that had a nice, fruity flavor, and we finished off our night with a quiz based on some of the information Remi shared with us on our tour. How do you think I did?
Wow! What a night! That Izakaya tour was so much fun and was a great way to eat some food and have some drinks like a local would. I have to thank Remi and Magical Tours for such an incredible night.
