2. Which Spanish Beer Tastes Best? ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
There is a lot of debate in Spain about which Spanish beer is the best. And this is intensified by the fact that each region has its own beer. So of course, the Spaniards from that region tend to think their beer is the top lager!
But Yoly (supertaster!) and I decided it was time to decide once and for which of the Spanish beers tastes the best. We set up this totally blind tasting. And in the tasting we tasted Mahou (Madrid), Cruzcampo (Seville), Alhambra (Granada), San Miguel (Barcelona), Moritz (Barcelona), Estrella Damm (Barcelona), Estrella Galicia (Barcelona), and Amstel (all over Spain). And to make it a little more interesting, we threw in a couple of wild cards… an alcohol-free beer (Mahou Sin) and a supermarket brand beer (Aliada).
Which was the winner?
You’ll have to watch to find out!!

???? ABOUT THIS VID! ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
If you've ever drunk Spanish wine, I'm sure you've heard of Rioja wine. It's without a doubt Spain's most famous wine region. In this video I drink three wines (all made with tempranillo) from iconic wineries to help you understand the region a little better. I discuss the flavours and aromas of each wine (or vino, as we call it here in Spain), and also talk about the difference between modern and traditional Rioja.
And who am I? I'm James Blick, co-founder of Devour Tours and a certified sommelier, trained by WSET, one of the most famous wine training centres in the world!
Also, I also answer some really common questions about Rioja, namely:
- Are all Rioja wines Tempranillo?
- Is Rioja a red wine or a wine wine?
- What is the grape in Rioja wines? (Hint: it's tempranillo!)

Ever heard of Calle Ponzano? It’s a famous tapas street in Madrid that tourists don't really know about. Yoly and I hit 5 tapas bars - a mix of modern and traditional - along this famous strip. Octopus, scallops, bravas, rare tuna, craft beer, tapas so modern they use a blowtorch in front of you. It’s all here. So venga, let’s go!

Calle de Ponzano is really easy to get to. It’s only a few Metro stops north of the centre. Head for Metro stops Iglesia or Alonso Cano. If you look on Google Maps ( you’ll see that most of the bars are between Calle Rio Rosas to the north, and the start of the street about 4 blocks south. It gets really busy on weekends and evenings. We were there on a Wednesday at lunchtime which is when it’s quieter.

Old school beer and seafood bar - true Madrid! There are two on the street - we went to the original at this address:

???? ABOUT THIS VID! ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Here in Spain we love sipping vermouth. It’s one of the most delicious alcoholic drinks you can enjoy. I remember when I first tried it, it was love at first sight. But I didn’t really know what I was drinking, or all the tradition and rules around how we enjoy it here in Spain. Now, dare I say, I’m a bit of a vermouth aficionado, and whenever friends visit Yoly and I in Madrid, he always take them for vermouth.
If you didn’t know what vermouth was… it’s actually a white wine, that’s been fortified and aromotised. In Spain, we generally drink sweet red vermouth, while in Italy they tend to be a little more bitter. Sometimes it’s served on tap, sometimes it’s served from the bottle. But either way, the key to enjoying vermouth is to know WHEN to do it - just before lunch, along with a group of friends. Then you switch over to wine with lunch. But that doesn’t mean you can’t eat tapas with vermouth. You MUST eat tapas with vermouth! Generally it’s simply tapas like olives, potato chips and over canned seafood (yes, we eat and love canned seafood in Spain!).
Some handy Spanish:
Un vermut por favor = I'll have a vermouth, please.
Un vermut de grifo por favor = I'll have a vermouth on tap, please.
THANK YOU to La Hora del Vermut for shouting me the tapas and drinks (all views my own of course!). They have a couple of locations through Madrid (incl. Mercado de San Miguel), all with excellent vermouth and tapas. Check out their details here:

History is my second love, after food. And in fact, sometimes I think it might be my first love!
When I moved to Madrid I fell in love with the city's history. While the Spanish capital may not be the oldest city in Europe, it was much older than New Zealand! And it was full of so many wonderful stories of intrigue, had been the home of so many fascinating people, and the centre of so many dramatic events in Spanish history.
So in this walking tour - which is based on the tour I designed when I designed Devour Tours' most popular Tapas, Taverns & History Tour - I take you through the history of Madrid, starting at the beginning and right up to the civil war.
Here are the places we stop:
1. Plaza de Oriente: Location of Madrid's royal palace and the spot where the city was founded!
2. Plaza de Ramales: Where Spain's most famous painter - Diego de Velazquez - may be buried!
3. Calle del Factor: Gorgeous views of the cathedral, the Royal Palace and the Casa del Campo (the old royal hunting grounds, now an enormous public park).
4. Calle de la Almudena: The admittedly not so impressive remains of an old church. But I love the statue of the Curios Neighbour, and also knowing that this was the former location of a mosque.
5. Calle de San Nicolás: Love this little hidden corner with Madrid's oldest standing church from the 12th century (and which potentially is the site of a former mosque
6. Plaza de la Villa: Once the most important square in the city!
7. Calle del Codo: Love this tiny little hidden street - also the location of the famous cookie nuns!
8. Plaza Puerta Cerrada: Right at the top of Calle Cava Baja (tapas heaven!), and where the famous motto of Madrid can be read on the walls - Over water my walls of fire are built.
9. Plaza Mayor: The city's main historic square - site of inquisition trials, bull fights, fires and the Christmas market.
10. Puerta del Sol: The people's square! Home of protests, uprisings and New Year's Eve celebrations!
11. Casa del Abuelo: Amazing garlic prawns, cooked right before your eyes!
12. Plaza Santa Ana: A gorgeous square surrounded by cafes and bars, and with my favourite statue in Madrid of Federico García Lorca.
13. Calle Lope de Vega: The final resting place (we think!) of Spain's most famous author - Miguel de Cervantes (author of Don Quixote)
Enjoy!

4. EPIC MADRID FOOD TOUR! ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Madrid has amazing food.. there I said it! Often when people think of Madrid they think of museums and art and maybe a trip to Toledo. But trust me, this city has an incredible food scene that is less touristy and more underground compared to some other cities in Spain. So, I wanted to make this Madrid food guide so that you can enjoy it like a true local!
Today I take you to 10 of my favourite places to eat 10 incredible bites. We start with the best chocolate in the city (melted from actual chocolate) at an over 100-year-old pastry shop. Then we head to a local and hidden family-run joint for the city’s top Spanish omelette (tortilla española) and a beer (caña).
Next up! Vermouth time. We nip across to the San Miguel market for a sweet red vermouth on tap just like the locals do (along with marcona almonds, campo real olives and a local skewer). Then we head to a SECRET STOP. Cloistered nuns who bake cookies in - the cookies are delicious and moreish and the experience is truly one-of-a-kind. As a friend used to say, like doing a drug deal!
OK… getting full. Next stop - jamón… ham! And the good stuff - acorn-fed jamón ibérico in a family-run ham shop. Around the corner we head to an over 100-year-old tapas bar for one of the most delicious tapas in the city - bull tail stew parcel, paired with a Rioja wine.
Next it’s Madrid’s most famous bite - the calamari sandwich. There are so many places that do this, but we head for the best one! And for more seafood, we swing around into the La Latina neighbourhood for the best bacalao in the city, served with a white wine in a place that is a true Madrid rough-and-tumble tapas bar.
And then - tapas. We swing into Casa Toni, a fantastic tapas bar that does brilliant sweetbreads - mollejas - a delicacy in many restaurants around the world, and here deliciously cooked with skill on the griddle.
And finally, dessert … we head to the most famous pastry shop in the city for the napolitana de crema. The perfect sweet end to a fabulous Madrid food tour. Siesta time!
Want to find those secret nun cookies? Head to Calle Codo (near Plaza de la Villa) and where you see the door with the sign Venta de Dulces, ring the top bell. Hours are Mon-Fri 0930-1300 then 16.30 - 18.30.
Here's the list of where we went:
1. El Riojano
2. Cerveriz
3. Mercado San Miguel (La Hora del Vermut was the stall)
4. Nuns
5. Mercado Jamon Iberico
6. Anciano Rey de los Vinos
7. Casa Revuelta
8. La Campana
9. Casa Toni
10. La Mallorquina
