Alek Egi - From Barley to Beer – Sensory Tour of the Malting and Brewing Process
What is malting? Why is brewing water so important? Why do we use hops? Is yeast really a brewer’s best friend? What is included in developing a beer recipe? Why is beer tasting very different from beer drinking? How to make sense of all these beer styles and how to make a choice? Beer tastings included*, featuring Stanley Park Brewing, Granville Island Brewing, Central City Brewers + Distillers, and Russell Brewing. (*Must be 19+ for tastings. ID required.)
Speaker: Alek Egi, B.Eng., M.Sc. / Brewing Manager and Program Coordinator / Brewing Instructor, Faculty of Science and Horticulture
Alek received a Bachelor of Engineering in Food Processing Technology from Belgrade University, and a Master of Food Science from Dalhousie University in Halifax. He perfected the art and science of both malting and brewing while working for the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre in Winnipeg. After surviving the coldest winter in Manitoba since 1896, he decided to move his family out West. In 2014, Alek accepted a position as a Brewing Instructor at KPU and was instrumental in developing the Brewing & Brewery Operations Diploma curriculum. Little did he know he would also be involved with designing, building, equipping and running a brewery for the first time!
