The Begijnhof, Amsterdam, the Netherlands
This shows the Begijnhof in Amsterdam, the Netherlands on Sunday afternoon, July 3, 2016. There is a lot of interesting history to this which is explained pretty well by the sign at the beginning of this video. I am in the process of posting a separate video of just the sign, which runs it twice, for those really interested in the history and details of this place. I can also tell you Wikipedia has some good info on this place if the sign itself proves insufficient. The video on just the sign should post shortly.

Amsterdam's secret village : The Begijnhof
The Begijnhof in Amsterdam is a beautiful portal to another world and time. A hidden Hofje, and one of the worst kept secrets in the city, however it's worth a closer look to reveal some of its amazing beauty and significance. So come with me on a short and fun journey to take a look off the beaten tracks of the city center. I enjoy looking at the ghosts of Amsterdam, and there is more to come.
If you enjoy this film, take a look at several others in my collection that tie up nicely. BLOOD STREET - a Look at how the street got its name and the council of death. SECRET GARDENS - see some other hidden hofs in the city. SECRETS OF THE REDLIGHT DISTRICT to see the other original wooden house in the city. THE SECRET CHURCH - to see how catholics were forced underground. THE OLD CHURCH - Amsterdams livingroom. Another connection to the Alteration and the Miracle of Amsterdam.
I hope you enjoy my little films. I make these for fun to share my passion for my local city and history. Please like, subscribe, comment if you wish? I hope you like it. If enough support, I will develop more.

Begijnhof, Amsterdam
The Begijnhof is one of the oldest inner courts in the city of Amsterdam. A group of historic buildings, mostly private dwellings, centre on it. As the name suggests, it was originally a Béguinage. Today it is also the site of the English Reformed Church.
The Begijnhof is the only inner court in Amsterdam which was founded during the Middle Ages, and therefore lies within the Singel — the innermost canal of Amsterdam's circular canal system. The Begijnhof is at medieval street level, which means a metre below the rest of the old city centre.
It is unclear when exactly the Begijnhof (Beguines' court) was founded. In 1346, the beguines still lived in a house. A courtyard was only first mentioned in 1389, probably after the religious status of the city rose due to the Amsterdam Eucharistic Miracle of 1345.
strolling in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, from Dam Square to the Begijnhof
This captures the street scenes in Amsterdam, the Netherlands as we walked from Dam Square to the Begijnhof on July 3, 2016. I am not sure exactly what streets we were on but there should be clues in the video itself as I tried to take note of street signs fairly often. We were in Amsterdam at the end of a Viking Cruises Rhine Getaway Cruise that ended in Amsterdam and we took an extension to stay a few extra days. Amsterdam is a very walkable and pleasant city from what we saw.

During a day of exploring the Centrum, my friends and I come upon the Begijnhof. These scenes are only steps away from Spui, near the Singel canal, south of Dam Square, this once secret inner courtyard was founded during the Middle Ages.
Outside the once hidden entrance on Kalverstraat, you'll see the exterior of the the courtyard and the passage into the sanctuary. Once inside you'll see the private residences of the female residents.
Tourists enjoy the beautiful day as they make their way into the courtyard for some quiet reflection.

The Begijnhof, One of the Oldest Inner Courts in the City of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Inside the Begijnhof the ground is at medieval street level, which means it is a meter below the rest of the old city center. This can be noted as I exit the Begijnhof up some steps and through a door to street level near the end of the video.
Also note that a metal track runs at step level on either side. This is used to accommodate moving bicycles easily up and down the steps.

Cut off from trafic noise, the Begijnhof is one of loveliest and serene spots in Amsterdam. Founded in the 14th century, the Begijnhof was the home of the begijntjes - the Beguines-, a lay Catholic sisterhood who lived like nuns, although they took no monastic vows.

Amsterdam, walking through Flowermarket & Kalverstraat
The Flowermarket ( Amsterdam Bloemenmarkt ) is the world's only floating flower market, the flower market is one of Amsterdam’s most colourful attractions. It is located on Amsterdam Singel between Muntplein and Koningsplein. At the flower market you’ll find tulips of every colour, either in bouquets or as bulbs to plant at home, the flower market includes 15 florists and garden shops as well as a range of souvenir gifts. The Kalverstraat is a busy shopping street of Amsterdam with shops, stores, cafes and restaurants.
Begijnhof Amsterdam
The Begijnhof is the ideal place to visit for an escape from the noise of the city. To explore this secret courtyard find the heavy wooden door in Amsterdam’s busy centre (entrance on Spui), push it open, and an oasis of 14th-century houses and gardens appears, along with two churches. The Begijnhof is at medieval street level, which means a meter below the rest of the old city center. Also here is Amsterdam’s oldest house (one of the city’s only two remaining wooden houses), dating from 1475. Women still live here, so groups aren’t allowed and visitors are asked not to make too much noise. The Begijnhof is definitely worth a mention on this list of free things to do in Amsterdam.
De Begijnhof (Secret Courtyards/Hofjes in Amsterdam)
De Begijnhof is one of the oldest hofjes in Amsterdam, they are also known as secret courtyards or gardens and are home to two churches.

In my opinion a must see and free thing to do in Amsterdam. It will also give you a nice glance into the history of the city, so enjoy the tour through Amsterdams Secret gardens, and through the hidden church all within a secret village inside Amsterdam center.
You can go back in time and see the alteration of Amsterdam and the Clandestine Hidden church in all of its glory.

Amsterdam Free // Begijnhof
A quiet courtyard in the middle of the bustling city. In the time when catholics were persecuted, a clever hidden chapel allowed religions to coexist in relative peace for centuries. Go get away from it all and watch how Amsterdammers peacefully share their living quarters with one of the main tourist attractions in town.
