Our walk to Begijnhof starts at Walplein Square. This square and the surrounding area in the southern Old Town of Bruges offers a variety of restaurants, as well as Bruges oldest brewery De Halve Maan. In good weather, you find plenty of outdoor seating areas. A sculpture in honor of the coachmen decorates the square. Created in 1982 by Belgian sculptor Jef Claerhout, the sculpture shows Zeus, Leda, and Prometheus on winged Pegasus.
Through the Wijngaardstraat we reach the Wijngaardplein, the meadow with the swans we already know from the boat tour. Over a small bridge and an archway, we reach the Beguinage.
The Beguinage in Bruges is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It used to be a medieval women's shelter where single women found refuge.
A church and a large number of small houses for the Beguines to live are lined up around a courtyard. Although the Beguines lived without confession, their life turned out to be an intermediate stage between religious life and lay state.
The Beginenhof in Bruges, Princely Beginenhof Ten Wijngaarde, was founded in the 13th century and is now inhabited and managed by Benedictine nuns. We are lucky, that, at this time of the year, countless daffodils bloom in the inner courtyard.
We leave the Beguinage at the southern exit and visit the Minnewaterpark, an oasis of peace in the town, which is strongly influenced by tourism. The Minnewater used to be a mooring for river ships and trek boats, a kind of water shuttle between Bruges and Ghent.
The Kasteel Minnewater offers a beautiful guest garden directly on the water, which allows you to enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
Back at the Katelijnestraat, we turn into the Nieuwe Gentweg and arrive at the Godshuis de Meulenaere, the Meulenaere Hospice.
In Bruges, rich people or guilds founded 46 of these almshouses in the 14th century. Around an inner courtyard, you find many small houses, that served as homes for the poor or old needy people. Still, 43 almshouses serve social objectives.

Belgium: The Beguinage and Almshouses in Bruges
The Princely Beguinage Ten Wijngaerde is the only preserved beguinage in Bruges.
The Begijnhof is a haven of peace and tranquility . It was founded in 1245 by Margaret of Constantinople, Countess of Flanders, and is located just beside the Minnewaterpark . The Beguinage is characterized by the small white houses in the middle of the large garden with beautiful trees and flowers .
There are no more Beguines any more , but since 1927, a community of a Benedictine monastery, founded by Canon Hoornaert lives here. In that year the houses to the west were transformed and developed into the Monasterium Vineyard, a priory of Benedictine parish nuns .
Other important religious sites in the city include the numerous old almshouses.
Almshouses are charitable housing provided to enable people (typically elderly people who can no longer work to earn enough to pay rent) to live in a particular community. They are often targeted at the poor of a locality, at those from certain forms of previous employment, or their widows, and are generally maintained by a charity or the trustees of a bequest.
The Almshouses in Bruges belong to the Patrimony of the Public Social Welfare Centre ( Openbaar Centrum voor Maatschappelijk Welzijn - OCMW) and to provide habitation , to less well-off elderly.

Begijnhof, Bruges
Originally the area of Bruges for a beguine (for women who want to dedicate their lives to God without actually becoming nuns), now a beautiful and peaceful area for present visitors.

Beguinage Ten Wijngaerde in Bruges, Belgium - Part 2
I recently traveled to Bruge and visited the most wonderful Beguine. I was particularly interested in this medieval 'coliving' lifestyle.
The Princely Beguinage Ten Wijngaerde is the only preserved beguinage in the Belgian city of Bruges. There are no more Beguines living there, but since 1927 it functions as a convent for Benedictines, founded by canon Hoornaert (Wikipedia)

Begijnenhuisje Brugge/Bruges Beguinale house

BEGIJNHOF TURNHOUT, BELGIË - 13TH CENTURY BEGUINAGE IN BELGIUM
Historic Catholic beguinage (begijnhof) located in Turnhout, Belgium. The unique and well preserved Belgian beguinage was build in the early 13 th century and is located right in the middle of the city centre. Untill recently the houses and other buildings were used by traditional beguines, who inhabited the age old beguinage for centuries. Furthermore the historical complex constists of a gatehouse, entrance building, a church, a chapel, a Lourdes grotto, many old trees, a wonderful kitchen garden and a large number of religious sculptures and statues. In 1998 the Flemish beguinage was officially recognized by Unesco as a cultural world heritage site.

Cut off from trafic noise, the Begijnhof is one of loveliest and serene spots in Amsterdam. Founded in the 14th century, the Begijnhof was the home of the begijntjes - the Beguines-, a lay Catholic sisterhood who lived like nuns, although they took no monastic vows.
