Travels to Wen Wu Temple | Sun Moon Lake | Taiwan
Wen Wu Temples are temples dedicated to the worshiping of the civil and military realms of the government. The two ideograms making up the temple’s name, “wen” and “wu”, describe a Chinese philosophy and political culture of both opposition and complementarity.
In this travel video I explore the Wen Wu Temple at Sun Moon Lake in Taiwan.

The Bombing of Master Han Dan in Taitung, Taiwan 2014
There are many versions of how this festival came to be. One legend accounts that the throwing of fireworks once got rid of a plague that threatened the city. Other versions describe Master Han Dan as the god of wealth and that by throwing more firecrackers at him you will receive more wealth for the coming year. It is reported that local business owners will spend an upwards of $7000 just on firecrackers for this event.
The brave man who volunteers to be master Han Dan normally wears a scarf, mask and shorts. He stands topless on a platform and is carried around town by four men. He visits several corners throughout the maze of downtown Taitung. At each corner he is met by a barrage of firecrackers with each business owner trying to outdo the others.

Taiwan’s only publicly funded opera troupe seeking a lifeline
Gezaixi -- also known as Taiwanese opera -- is a form of street entertainment that many seniors watched growing up. For many young people in Taiwan though, the art form holds little appeal. Yilan''s Lanyang Opera troupe hopes to change that, and their very survival depends on the success of their efforts. The publicly funded troupe has been performing for 27 years now, but soon it could be the end of the road as funding dries up. Troupe members hope that incorporating comedy and modern themes into their performances will help attract younger audiences. In today''s Sunday special report, we take you behind the curtain to meet the people fighting to keep Taiwanese opera alive. The 26th day of the fourth month of the lunar calendar is the birthday of the God of Agriculture, Shennong. This year New Taipei City''s Xianse Temple invited Lanyang Opera troupe to help celebrate the day. Amid the festivities, one matter weighing on the minds of the performers was a possible budget cut by the Yilan County Council.Chen Chen-wangTroupe memberThose councilors feel that if they give us 20 or 30 thousand NT, it''s a huge boon.Established in 1992, the Langyang Opera troupe is the first and only publicly funded Taiwanese opera troupe in the nation. The troupe relies on funding from the Yilan County Government.Chiang Chien-yuanTroupe directorIn the beginning we were allocated NT$25 million a year to cover everything from production costs to wages. But our funding gradually decreased to the point that this year we are left with only NT$10 million. This year, the county government begrudgingly offered the troupe NT$11.8 million. The county warned that it would need to trim funding in the years to come. Troupe members said they feared it was their fate to be disbanded. Onstage the troupe is performing an adaptation of the classic Chinese play Peach Blossom Lady Fights the Duke of Zhou. The troupe has performed the piece to over 20,000 people over the past three years at venues throughout the country. In contrast with traditional Taiwanese opera performances, the troupe strives to inject modern elements into their performances, to appeal to a broader audience through the use of humor. Sung Lung-chuan Yilan cultural affairs officerThe U.S., as well as places like Australia and Japan … we''ve been to them all to perform. Lanyang''s Taiwanese opera is the type of performance that most fully represents Taiwanese culture. These Taiwanese opera performances are the concerted effort of all troupe members. But in the eyes of some local representatives, the troupe is a poor use of public money. Critics complain that the troupe is stale, and that it posts disappointing ticket sales. They say the troupe competes for other acts for precious performance slots. These reasons and more are routinely brought out to the council floor to argue for funding cuts.Liao Hsin-tzuTroupe memberIt''s because things like art are hard to assess from a monetary angle. You could say we aren''t earning enough money. But to be honest, last year we actually performed more than 100 times in just over 300 days. That means we had a performance once every three days. To reduce their expenses, the troupe has cut its creative development team from 22 people to six. Its orchestra once had 12 members, and that''s now down to four. With its numbers dwindling, the troupe has found itself trapped in a vicious cycle.Chen Chun-yuYilan County councilorWe need to have some second-tier actors playing small parts. Some of our musicians are even contracted. This is mainly because we don''t have funding.Chiang Chien-yuanTroupe directorActually there are lots of students who want to join us, but there''s just no funding for it. Every kettle has its lid. If we don''t have vacancies, how can people join us?Chen Tsung-wenCommunity development office directorLots of scholars have pointed that Lanyang Opera troupe has to endure abuse every year to get its funding. It''s as if it would be better to do away with them, to let them go off and make it on their own. The original intent behind Yilan County establishing this troupe has already been lost. Some suggest that the troupe change the style of its operatic performances. They say this could breathe new life into the art form and attract new audiences.Huang Chun-mingFormer troupe directorYou have to keep pace with the times. Otherwise it''s just going to be a bunch of elderly people, a bunch of grannies watching. If you don''t deliver something new to pull in new audiences, then the opera doesn''t have an audience, and there''s no life ahead of it.In this audience of middle-aged and elderly people, it''s clear that the opera has failed to gain traction with youth. These older spectators are the only ones keeping this old tradition alive.Lee Pi-huaTroupe memberWith some situations, if there''s nothing you can do, then you just have to let th...

Buffaloes Cross River in Southwest China City for May Day Holiday
Tens of thousands of tourists and photography fans from across the country gathered in Peng'an County of Nanchong City in southwest China's Sichuan Province to watch buffaloes crossing the Jialing River for the May Day holiday on Saturday.
More than 100 buffaloes successively rushed into the river following the bell cow and swam to the Sun Island in the middle of the river. Tourists were excited at the scene.
We came here from Shanghai just to watch the buffalo river crossing. That's a miraculous spectacle. We got up at 5 o'clock in the morning for this, said a tourist.
I've been here to watch the buffalo river crossing many times and each time I had different feelings. But they are always spectacular. The river crossing is a perfect integration of the buffaloes and natural ecology, which is closely associated with the present ecology of the Jialing River, said a photography fan. More on:
