CHINA: BEIJING: US PRESIDENT CLINTON VISIT UPDATE
Mandarin/Eng/Nat
Speaking at China's largest Protestant church, U-S President Bill Clinton preached a message of unity and freedom on Sunday in a nation where Christian leaders have traditionally been jailed or harassed.
There was a brief disruption when a woman walked up the aisle toward the president's pew, claiming she wanted to meet the president.
She was allowed a few minutes to meet the U-S leader at the conclusion of the church service.
The afternoon was set aside for relaxation as Clinton and his wife and daughter embarked upon an extensive sightseeing tour of China's highlights: the Forbidden City and the Great Wall.
U-S President Bill Clinton, his wife Hillary and his daughter Chelsea arrived at the Chongwenmen Church in Beijing on Sunday morning.
China's largest Protestant church - unmarked by any steeple - is tucked away at the back of a hotel car park, past a row of shanties.
Parishioners were hopeful Clinton's appearance at the government-sanctioned event would make a difference.
There was a brief disruption when a woman - unknown to the parishioners - walked up the aisle toward the president's pew.
Some members of the congregation tried to grab her on her way, but she shook them off, saying she wanted to see Clinton.
She was escorted to the back of the church and remained silent during the service.
Clinton talked about the growth of the Christian faith in China.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
We celebrate with you the growth of the practice of our faith in China, and we rejoice to hear Reverend Che recite the number of churches and other places of worship where people are practising their faith today.
SUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, U-S President
After the service, the woman who sought her moment with the president was finally allowed to meet with him.
She told him she was a charismatic Christian and thanked him for coming to China, saying she hoped China's leaders would become Christians.
Later, she complained to reporters about problems beyond religious tolerance, blaming the government for a food shortage in China.
(SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
There are 25 provinces in China. There isn't enough food or water, and there isn't even enough wheat. Wheat production is not as good as in the past. He (Jiang Zemin) does things for his own power.
SUPER CAPTION: Christian woman who met Clinton
The Clintons then began their tour of the ancient palaces and courtyards of the Forbidden City.
Playing tourist, Clinton strolled through a maze of buildings and courtyards where emperors hid and commoners were not allowed until the 1911 revolution, which ended the Qing Dynasty.
Clinton and his family walked through most of the complex and passed through the Gate of Heavenly Purity in the emperor's inner court, beyond which only women and eunuchs were allowed after dark.
Walking through the site, U-S President Bill Clinton marvelled at the contrast with China's modern-day transformation.
After touring the great city, the presidential party then set out to visit the Great Wall.
In steamy heat, the presidential party strolled atop the wall, where they peered through hazy skies at far reaches of the stone spine built mostly in the second century B-C to hold out Central Asian horsemen.
Clinton described the sight as 'quite unbelievable' as he, Hillary and Chelsea posed for pictures on China's famous landmark.
But the press were still curious about the woman who had regaled Clinton in church earlier in the day.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Question: Mr Clinton can you tell us what the woman in the church wanted?
Question: What do you think Mrs. Clinton? (about the sights)
Answer: Magnificent
SUPER CAPTION: U-S President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton

The afternoon was set aside for relaxation as Clinton and his wife and daughter embarked upon an extensive sightseeing tour of China's highlights: the Forbidden City and the Great Wall.
Clinton ended the day of sightseeing and worship with a farewell dinner with Chinese President Jiang Zemin.
On Monday, he will address university students in Beijing before taking off for Shanghai.

Many in China are pleased their country has drawn so much media attention as it hosts the President's nine-day visit.
Those involved in the tourist industry see their country's promotion as a money spinning opportunity.
Clinton is making the first U-S presidential visit to China since the Chinese military crushed peaceful democracy protests in Beijing's Tiananmen Square in 1989.
Clinton finished the hectic day with another meeting with his Chinese host President Jiang Zemin.
Clinton admired a traditional Chinese mural and listened to Jiang talk about its history.
On Monday, Clinton will deliver an address to Beijing University students and meet U-S embassy staff before leaving for Shanghai.

Go Behind the Great Wall
Follow along as Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai guides you through the sights and sounds of China.
Float down the Haungpu River to Shanghai, one of China’s most modern and vibrant cities, and see historic Nanjing Road. Witness martial artistry in the gentle, fluid movements of tai chi and the agile acrobatics of the Peking Opera Company.
Scale the hauntingly beautiful Huangshan mountain range to the mythical Sea of Clouds, the inspiration of poets and painters for centuries. Then follow the Yangtze River to the water-bound city of Suzhou, dubbed “the Venice of the East” by Marco Polo.
There’s even more to savor: watch as regional delicacies are prepared on the spot at a busy night market in Xinjiang Province, and trek across the Gobi Desert on the ancient Silk Road to Inner Mongolia, where nomadic horsemen ride free. Enter the walls of Beijing’s impossibly vast Forbidden City, and explore the craggy formations of Shilin Stone Forest.
And thanks to spectacular wraparound Circle-Vision 360° cinematography, you'll feel as if you're really there!

SUMMARY
=======
Hampi, also referred to as the Group of Monuments at Hampi, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in east-central Karnataka, India. It became the centre of the Hindu Vijayanagara Empire capital in the 14th century. Chronicles left by Persian and European travellers, particularly the Portuguese, state Hampi was a prosperous, wealthy and grand city near the Tungabhadra River, with numerous temples, farms and trading markets. By 1500 CE, Hampi-Vijayanagara was the world's second-largest medieval-era city after Beijing, and probably India's richest at that time, attracting traders from Persia and Portugal. The Vijayanagara Empire was defeated by a coalition of Muslim sultanates; its capital was conquered, pillaged and destroyed by sultanate armies in 1565, after which Hampi remained in ruins.Located in Karnataka near the modern-era city of Hosapete, Hampi's ruins are spread over 4,100 hectares (16 sq mi) and it has been described by UNESCO as an austere, grandiose site of more than 1,600 surviving remains of the last great Hindu kingdom in South India that includes forts, riverside features, royal and sacred complexes, temples, shrines, pillared halls, mandapas, memorial structures, water structures and others. Hampi predates the Vijayanagara Empire; there is evidence of Ashokan epigraphy, and it is mentioned in the Ramayana and the Puranas of Hinduism as Pampaa Devi Tirtha Kshetra. Hampi continues to be an important religious centre, housing the Virupaksha Temple, an active Adi Shankara-linked monastery and various monuments belonging to the old city.

SUMMARY
=======
Modern Bangladesh emerged as an independent nation in 1971 after breaking away and achieving independence from Pakistan in the Bangladesh Liberation War. The country's borders coincide with the major portion of the ancient and historic region of Bengal in the eastern part of the Indian subcontinent, where civilisation dates back over four millennia, to the Chalcolithic. The history of the region is closely intertwined with the history of Bengal.
The area's early history featured a succession of Indian empires, internal squabbling, and a tussle between Hinduism and Buddhism for dominance. Islam became dominant gradually since the 13th century when Sunni missionaries such as Shah Jalal arrived. Later, Muslim rulers initiated the preachings of Islam by building masjid (mosques) and madrassas. From the 13th century onward, the region was controlled by the Bengal Sultanate. Afterwards, the region came under the suzerainty of the Mughal Empire, as its wealthiest province. Bengal Subah generated 50% of the empire's GDP and 12% of the world's GDP, with the capital city Dhaka having a population exceeding a million people.
Following the decline of the Mughal Empire in the early 1700s, Bengal became a semi-independent state under the Nawabs of Bengal, before it was conquered by the British East India Company at the Battle of Plassey in 1757, directly contributing to the Industrial Revolution in Britain and to deindustrialization and famines in Bengal. The Bengali city of Calcutta served as the capital city of British India up until the early 20th century.
The borders of modern Bangladesh were established with the partition of Bengal and India in August 1947, when ...

I am a Tibetan, one of the few who have come to this strange western world, writes the author in the book's prologue. They assure me that some of my statements may not be believed. Tibet is a country unknown to the rest of the world.
The Third Eye: Autobiography of a Tibetan Lama is a book first published in 1956 in London; Due to its initial success soon was translated into other languages, appearing in Spanish already towards 1958.
Backed by a remarkable sales index and in spite of the great controversy that raised its publication, this work has become a reference of the last times for the discovery of the beliefs and idiosyncrasy of the lamas or monks tibetanos, that always has been Hidden behind a great secrecy. This authentic secrecy has survived to this day, despite the praiseworthy attempts to promote the accessibility of Eastern esotericism and philosophy to our Western culture since the nineteenth century by authors such as H. Blavatsky and later as Rene Guenon. These efforts, however, have really been left inaccessible to the average Western man, especially if there is no sincere interest in traditional occultism in between. It is above all for this reason that the general belief that the doors of the Tibetan lamasteries have from an immemorial time harbored almost supernatural esoteric mystic and ritual knowledge, intentionally hidden and inaccessible to the outside world and only slightly perceived by Some privileged foreigners.
In this context and at a time when the foundations of what would later be called the new age thought, so close to everything Eastern, the book The Third Eye appears; An autobiographical work that reveals, through the experiences of a high-ranking Tibetan lama, the secrets of the mysteries and rituals traditionally learned and practiced by the elite of Tibetan initiates, inherited from their most distant ancestors.
