Huangmei Opera
It was a very enjoyable evening with friends in Anqing, first out to dinner and then off to the charming opera house where we sat in a side balcony and ate a tray of fresh fruit while watching the show. This type of opera originated over 200 years ago with a revival going on now. It has a rural folksong and dance theme with music that is performed in a continuous high pitch. Not sounding like a typical Chinese opera, it would take time for me to get used to the sound. Still, it was rather fascinating and colourful!

Small stage injects vitality into traditional Chinese opera
Dramas in small theaters have always been an appeal to young people in Beijing, as the format of performance has flourished for a long time now. Traditional Chinese opera has also “caught a ride” of the stage, in an effort to gain momentum among wider audiences.
The first Small-Theater Opera Festival was held in Beijing from October 16th, staging 50 classic shows at the Star Theater. The shows were produced by national theaters as well as private companies from Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Hubei and Taiwan.
From Peking Opera and Kunqu Opera, to Huangmei Opera, the festival features almost all the traditional Chinese opera forms, which are collectively hailed as a quintessence part of Chinese culture. Among them were Farewell to My Concubine presented by Beijing Peking Opera Theater and Taiwan Guoguang Opera Company's Goodbye, Youth.
The time-honored Chinese performing art has been instilled with new vitality in its new form. Modern elements were combined into each of the shows at the festival, in a bid to enable younger audiences to be connected to the performances more easily. To further explore the opera’s developing potential, art salons, academic seminars and promotion fairs were also held during the festival.
This is the first edition of the Small-Theater Opera Festival, and surprisingly, audiences of various backgrounds have reacted quite well to it. Therefore, the event organizers have decided to produce the festival on an annual basis.
