2. SOUNDBITE: (English) Haile Gebrselassie, Marathon world record holder:
Beijing is hot, humid and plus polluted. I don't want to kill myself just to run in that kind of circumstance, that's why I decided not to compete in Beijing, not to compete in a marathon. Instead of a marathon I'm planning to run 10,000 metres.

4. SOUNDBITE: (English) Haile Gebrselassie, Marathon world record holder:
You see out of all those events, marathon is hardest one, a difficult one. For example cycling, you cannot compare with marathon, 10-thousand or 5-thousand or sprinting. Everything running in the stadium but when you talk about marathon - two hours and more on street, how is that possible? That's why I decided not to compete a marathon. As I told you myself I've had problem since 1999, asthmatic, I'm tested asthma, and that's why I cannot just compete.

The world record holder for the marathon said on Wednesday that he didn't want to kill himself by running in Beijing's polluted environment during the Olympics later this year.
Earlier this week Ethiopia's Haile Gebrselassie announced that he would almost certainly skip the long-distance running event in Beijing because of the city's poor air quality.
Beijing is hot, humid and plus polluted, said Gebrselassie.
I don't want to kill myself just to run in that kind of circumstances, that's why I decided not to compete in Beijing. Instead of a marathon I'm planning to run 10,000 metres.
China has been on the constant defensive over the level of its air pollution.
With the Olympics around the corner, a muddy haze blankets the capital of Beijing on most days.
Gebrselassie said the marathon was different than other running events because it involved more time on the streets and that he was asthmatic, and that's why I cannot just compete.
The 34-year-old said he would make a final decision in May after he finds out whether he qualifies for the 10,000-metre race - he would be a gold medal favourite if he did take part in either race.

Beijing Marathon runners wear masks to combat smog from pollution
Beijing Marathon runners wear masks to combat smog from pollution : The 34th Beijing International Marathon has gone ahead despite concerns about bad air quality. Many of the 25,000 runners wore face masks or used sponges to battle the smog. One resident in the city told the BBC that the air smelt like burnt coal. The organisers warned runners to expect slight or moderate smog, but the US embassy said the air was so bad, it represented a hazard. Some athletes are reported to have given up because of the pollution.

Vertical marathon runners race in Beijing
Vertical marathon runners race up the tallest building in Beijing. 28-year-old Thomas Dold from Germany, reached the top in just 9 minutes and 55 seconds. To climb here, 330 metres altitude and 2,041 steps, that is really absolute(ly) outstanding and really very high competitive race here. If you compare maybe to other races, it is really one of the tallest and most heaviest buildings to race, so that makes me very glad to win here, said Dold.
Vertical marathon, or stair climbing, is now a global sport with runners hailing from the US, Canada, Europe and Asia, as well as professional athletes who train year-round to become the first to reach the top of the world's tallest buildings. Report by Genelle Aldred.

Beijing International Marathon goes ahead despite heavy pollution blanketing the Chinese capital
The 2014 Beijing International Marathon went ahead, despite heavy pollution blanketing the Chinese capital on Sunday.
The Beijing Marathon, now 34 years old, is regarded as something of a festival for international marathon runners.
But this year the runners faced not just the race itself but the challenge of heavy smog.
Many runners prepared themselves with face masks, and some said they had to wear them during the race to reduce the risk posed by the hazardous atmospheric conditions.
About 30-thousand runners registered for the event, with almost half coming to China from overseas.
The race began in Tiananmen Square and finished in Beijing's Olympic Park, with buildings across the city disappearing into a grey-tinged mist.
The men's and women's marathon winners were both from Ethiopia.
Defending champion Girmay Birhanu Gebru retained his title in a time of two hours, 10 minutes and 42 seconds, while Fatuma Sado Dergo won the women's event in two hours, 30 minutes and three seconds.
China's Gong Lihua finished third in the women's event in a time of two hours, 32 minutes and 23 seconds.
Gong, from China's Inner Mongolia, said it was her first time running on such a smoggy day.
She said the smog did have some impact on her performance.
Running in this kind of smog, I felt I couldn't sweat well and my body has been very sticky and moist, but I cannot sweat normally, Gong said.
The marathon's organising committee said late on Saturday that postponing the event would have been difficult because of all the planning that had gone into it, and asked competitors for their understanding.
