How to travel from the Beijing Airport (PEK) to the city
There are three options to travel to the center of Beijing from the Beijing Capital airport.
The simplest is the taxi. always have you destination name and address in writing in Chinese as the driver will not understand English. A taxi to the center if the city is about ¥100 plus toll if any. There is no tipping in China.
A popular alternative is to take the Airport Express to then transfer to the subway. As long as you do not have a ton of luggage and are not traveling during peak hours, this is a good alternative. Cost is ¥25 for the train plus the cost of the subway tickets. Here is a good subway map: On the airport website you can find up to date details about operating hours:
The final choice is the shuttle buses. There are many bus lines covering a good part of the city. This is our preferred transportation but you need to know which bus is closest to your destination and where to get off. On this website you can find the list of buses, their stops and operating hours:

About Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA):
Beijing Capital International Airport (IATA: PEK, ICAO: ZBAA) is the main international airport serving Beijing. It is located 32 km (20 mi) northeast of Beijing's city center, in an enclave of Chaoyang District and the surroundings of that enclave in suburban Shunyi District. The airport is owned and operated by the Beijing Capital International Airport Company Limited, a state-controlled company. The airport's IATA Airport code, PEK, is based on the city's former romanized name, Peking.
Beijing Capital International Airport is the main hub for Air China, the flag carrier of the People's Republic of China, which flies to around 120 destinations (excluding cargo) from Beijing. China Eastern Airlines, Hainan Airlines and China Southern Airlines also use the airport as their hub.
Beijing Capital added Terminal 3 in 2008 in time for the 2008 Summer Olympics, the second largest airport terminal in the world after Dubai International Airport's Terminal 3, and the sixth largest building in the world by area. Beijing Capital International Airport covers 1480 hectares of land.
Beijing Capital has rapidly ascended in rankings of the world's busiest airports in the past decade. It had become the busiest airport in Asia in terms of passenger traffic and total traffic movements by 2009. It has been the world's second busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic since 2010. The airport registered 557,167 aircraft movements (take-offs and landings), ranking 6th in the world in 2012.[3] In terms of cargo traffic, Beijing airport has also witnessed rapid growth. By 2012, the airport had become the 13th busiest airport in the world by cargo traffic, registering 1,787,027 tons. (

Beijing airport (PEK): International arrival at the Terminal 3
Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) is the main international airport serving Beijing. Beijing Capital added Terminal 3 in 2008 in time for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, the second largest airport terminal in the world. It is also the second busiest airport in the world.
This video shows the arrival process at terminal 3. It also shows the resources than are available in the arrival area.
We also show the three transportation options to reach the city center: (1) the Airport Express which connects to the subway network; (2) buses that can take you to various places in the city (cheapest option); or (3) taxis.
The Airport Express operates from 06h21 to 22h51. The fare is 25RMB, payable in cash. You can also pay using the transportation card (Yikatong). The card can be purchased at the ticket counter of the Airport Express. Here is a map of the Beijing subway:
You can also watch our video on how to use the Beijing subway:
There are many buses that can take you to various places in Beijing. This is the most economical mode of transportation. The list of bus lines as well as their stops, fares and schedules can be found on the official airport website:
Taxis are the simplest way to reach your destination in Beijing. The fare to the center of the city is about 90 to 125RMB. Taxi drivers do not speak English. You need the name of your hotel as well as the address in writing in Chinese. This can usually be found on the hotel website. Taxis in Beijing use the meter. If your driver proposes a fixed rate, get out and take another taxi. In addition to the amount shown on the meter, you may have to pay the toll. Minivans are also available for larger families.

BEIJING TAXI is a feature length documentary that vividly portrays the ancient capital of China going through a profound transformational arch. Through a humanistic lens, the intimate lives of three taxi drivers thread through the morphing city of Beijing confronted with modern issues and changing values. With stunning and poetic imagery of Beijing combined with a contemporary score rich in atmosphere, we experience a visceral sense of the common citizens persistent attempts to grasp the elusive. Its society is living through enormous contradictions adjusting to a new capitalist system from a Communist-ruled and educated society. Set in the Beijing before and after the 2008 Olympics, BEIJING TAXI takes us on a lyrical journey into fragments of a society riding the bumpy roads to modernization. Though the destination is unknown, they continue to forge ahead.

How to travel around Beijing | using Didi
Hi travellers,
We travelled around Beijing using the Didi app, a Chinese version of Uber. It worked wonderfully for us to hit up the tourist spots including Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, the Great Wall and back to Beijing airport in one weekend. It is cheaper to use this app than catching a taxi.
It can now be used in English, but I can only comment on our success using it in Chinese.

Apple CEO Hails Didi Taxi to Meet Chinese Developers in Beijing
The Apple CEO is in town in Beijing along with his company's 1 billion U.S. dollars of investment in a Chinese taxi service company. Tim Cook has taken a taxi ride on Monday with Didi Chuxing's president Jean Liu Qing before meeting software developers in an App Store.
It's Apple's first investment venture in China, long after its namesake desktops, laptops, pads, pods and phones have made inroads into the world's most populous country.
The Apple CEO is sensitive about fat figures.
As you know, Apple invested in her (Jean's) company in the last week, and we are very very proud to have done that. Didi has about 14 million drivers now across China, and 300 million users in China. And as of this morning, that's 300 million and one because Jane and I took a Didi taxi over this morning, Cook says at a meeting with developers, government officials and reporters during his eighth China trip since becoming Apple CEO in 2011.
On the receiving end of this 1 billion-dollar investment, fat figures should last long and deep.
Didi Chuxing marketing director Ye Yun says that the Chinese company would use the Apple investment in refining its products and services, with research and development projects like facial recognition systems which are expected to help both customers and drivers to enjoy their rides.
On her part, Jean Liu Qing says that the cooperation between Didi and Apple has now entered a new phase and its developers have been benefiting from Apple know-how and how-to through its Apple Stores in China.
(Apple Store) is a pragmatic platform and provides a real opportunity for all entrepreneurs. If we can seize this opportunity, we can create even more fascinating stories, says Jean Liu Qing.
Apple had no investment strategy for China before. Its strategy used to be sell products solely and invest nothing. Its investment now may not necessarily reverse its downward trend for good, but may contribute to formulating a layout of the next growth engine, especially an ecological layout, says Hu Yanping, an expert from the Data Center of China Internet.
In Hu's view, the Apple investment in Didi is, to a larger extent, a prelude to Apple Car entering China's smart-car market. He adds that to make inroads into the Chinese smart-car market, local partners and localized operations are the key. Didi can readily serve as Apple's local operation network for Apple cars in future.
Trade pundits have also pointed out to the fact that Apple is expected to promote the use of Apple Pay in China through Didi Chuxing, which now uses Alipay and Tencent's WePay online payment systems.

BEIJING TAXI is a feature-length documentary that vividly portrays the ancient capital of China undergoing a profound transformation. The intimate lives of three taxi drivers are seen through a humanistic lens as they navigate a quickly morphing city, confronting modern issues and changing values. The three protagonists radiate a warm sense of humanity despite the struggles that each faces in adapting to new realities of life in the modern city. With stunning imagery of Beijing and a contemporary score rich in atmosphere, BEIJING TAXI communicates a visceral sense of the common citizens’ persistent attempts to grasp the elusive. The 2008 Summer Olympic Games serve as the backdrop for BEIJING TAXI's story, a coming out party for a rising nation and a metaphor for Chinese society and its struggles to reconcile enormous contradictions while adjusting to a new capitalist system that can seem foreign to some in the Communist-ruled and educated society. Candid and perceptive in its filming approach and highly cinematic and moody in style, BEIJING TAXI takes us on a lyrical journey through fragments of a society riding the bumpy roads to modernization. Though its destination unknown, the drivers continue to forge ahead.
