How to travel from the Beijing Airport (PEK) to the city
There are three options to travel to the center of Beijing from the Beijing Capital airport.
The simplest is the taxi. always have you destination name and address in writing in Chinese as the driver will not understand English. A taxi to the center if the city is about ¥100 plus toll if any. There is no tipping in China.
A popular alternative is to take the Airport Express to then transfer to the subway. As long as you do not have a ton of luggage and are not traveling during peak hours, this is a good alternative. Cost is ¥25 for the train plus the cost of the subway tickets. Here is a good subway map: On the airport website you can find up to date details about operating hours:
The final choice is the shuttle buses. There are many bus lines covering a good part of the city. This is our preferred transportation but you need to know which bus is closest to your destination and where to get off. On this website you can find the list of buses, their stops and operating hours:

Beijing airport (PEK): International arrival at the Terminal 3
Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) is the main international airport serving Beijing. Beijing Capital added Terminal 3 in 2008 in time for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, the second largest airport terminal in the world. It is also the second busiest airport in the world.
This video shows the arrival process at terminal 3. It also shows the resources than are available in the arrival area.
We also show the three transportation options to reach the city center: (1) the Airport Express which connects to the subway network; (2) buses that can take you to various places in the city (cheapest option); or (3) taxis.
The Airport Express operates from 06h21 to 22h51. The fare is 25RMB, payable in cash. You can also pay using the transportation card (Yikatong). The card can be purchased at the ticket counter of the Airport Express. Here is a map of the Beijing subway:
You can also watch our video on how to use the Beijing subway:
There are many buses that can take you to various places in Beijing. This is the most economical mode of transportation. The list of bus lines as well as their stops, fares and schedules can be found on the official airport website:
Taxis are the simplest way to reach your destination in Beijing. The fare to the center of the city is about 90 to 125RMB. Taxi drivers do not speak English. You need the name of your hotel as well as the address in writing in Chinese. This can usually be found on the hotel website. Taxis in Beijing use the meter. If your driver proposes a fixed rate, get out and take another taxi. In addition to the amount shown on the meter, you may have to pay the toll. Minivans are also available for larger families.

About Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA):
Beijing Capital International Airport (IATA: PEK, ICAO: ZBAA) is the main international airport serving Beijing. CHINA LAYOVER TOUR (BEIJING)
Join us as we explore China twice during our layovers to and from Thailand. We paid about 200 bucks each layover but everything was included and we had a private car drive us around. Best purchase ever especially considering the fact that we didn’t have to pay over 300 dollars a piece for an actual Chinese visa. Temporary visas are free at the airport for a maximum of 144 hours. Let me know if you have any question!
Also, we used “Beijing layover tours” for our tour.

Transit At Beijing Airport
If you have long lay over hours at Beijing Capital International Airport, there's many fascilities you can use. Terminal 3 building where international flight passengers transit is so broad. Toilet, shower, reclining seats are there. You can drink water for free, shops, eat, or just enjoy the public spaces in the airport.
Or if you have more waiting hours like us (we had 11 hours), aplly for 24 hours or even 72 hours (for some citizens in the world) China free visa. Just come to the immigration area, ask the officer the free visa.
After getting the visa, take a sky train to another terminal to board on airport express who bring you to Dongzhimen. From Dongzhimen, you can change to metro to the centre of Beijing (Tiananmen Square, Old City, etc).

How To Reach Beijing City Centre From Beijing Airport
Мany passengers have a long transit hours in Beijing Airport and since many nationalities could have a free visa for 24 hours or 72 hours to leave the airport, so why you dont use it to explore the city. For my case ( an Indonesian passport holder ) I applied for China visa before hand at the Chinese Embassy in my city.

The most common first question is how to reach the city centre ( Tiananmen Square most likely ) from Beijing Airport. Taxi is probably the most easiest way but consider the crazy traffic in Beijing!!
Beijing Airport has an easy Airport Express Train running from Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 of the Capital Airport to reach Dongzhimen ( this is the train station if you want to reach Tiananmen Square and as well you can continue your trip to other destinations in Beijing )
The duration is around 28 kilometers or around 30 minutes.
The train started from 06:35 AM to 23:10 PM daily.
When you arrive in Capital Airport, just follow the signs to the Airport Express Train Station then purchase a SMART TICKET in the locket and enter into the track direction city centre.
The ticket price is CNY 20 for deposit and CNY 25 for one way to the city centre, just refill the ticket as much as you needed it as the full deposit and the balance in the card could be refund.

24H transit visa in Beijing: Tour of the Forbidden City
We had the 24-hour transit visa and could explore Beijing for the day. I gotta say Beijing was crazy beautiful. I have no idea what I thought about it before but now everything’s different. Hopefully, I can return to china to study Mandarin/Cantonese and explore more inshallah.
It's limited to certain countries only and you can only visit certain cities. Here's some info on the visa though feel free to look for more on your own:
Secondly, I was told that it was better to preorder a sim card before going to China since you'd need to register your number there or something like that. I remember in one of my transit to China in order to borrow a router they did take my passport as well. So before you arrive you can look into that. I have the link below for where I got my data plan from the airport in Hong Kong, but you can order ahead of time online depending on where you pick up the sim from.

How to get from Beijing Airport to City Center by Train
How to use the Beijing Airport Express
The Airport Express Train (Beijing subway) offers the fastest way into downtown Beijing. The trip takes just half an hour, and there’s a train every 10 minutes (more often during peak hours). Carrying nearly 40,000 passengers each day, the Airport Express is also one of the world’s busiest trains!
Taking the Airport Express is easy. Just follow the signs in your terminal to the Airport Express Station. If you’ve arrived at Terminal 1 from a domestic flight, you’ll need to walk or take the free Cross Terminal Shuttle to Terminal 2. At the station, you can buy your ticket from the manned ticket office (cash only), or the ticket vending machines. For the vending machines, you’ll need small notes or coins, so it’s easier to use the ticket office. The ticket is 25 yuan, which is about four to five US dollars.
Pro Tip: Instead of buying a one-way ticket, buy your Beijing Transportation Smart Card (aka Yikatong) at the Airport Express ticket window. You will need to pay a 20 yuan deposit, and add about 50 to 100 yuan. Soon you will be able to use Yikatog on Apple pay. You can use this smart card throughout the city, for all Beijing public transit, taxis, public phones, and even to shop in some stores.
To board the train, insert your one-way ticket or swipe your Yikatong, and enter the waiting platform. Be sure to keep your ticket, as you’ll need it to exit the station!
For central Beijing, most visitors will get off the train at Dongzhimen station. If you bought a one-way Airport Express ticket, you’ll need to buy a new subway ticket if you transfer to another subway line. If you have funds on your Yikatong, you can use that to pay for your next subway ride.
