Gio's Paintbrush episode 42: a ten-minute show on the hand-painted skulls in the bone house at the Chapel of St. Michael, Hallstatt, Austria
Hallstatt Bonehouse [Beinhaus], Austria
The small town of Hallstatt, Austria, precariously perching on the side of a mountain provides one of the most gorgeous scenic landscapes anywhere in the World. However, along with the strikingly picturesque view Hallstatt also offers an eerie Bone Chapel [Beinhaus] [Karner] originally built in the 12th century to accommodate for lack of cemetery space and the need to recycle graves by digging up the remains after twenty years and transferring them to the Bone House. The rows and rows of roughly 600 sculls are labeled with names and dates of birth and death and beautifully painted in different styles with ivy, roses, black crosses, flowers and even other things, such as serpents.

Bonehouse - Halstatt, Austria
When you build a town on the side of a mountain you eventually run out of places to buy people. This is where the bonehouse comes into play. After about a dozen years a person was dug up to make room for the newly dead. Their bones entered the bonehouse.

Karner (Bone House), Hallstatt, Austria
This is a bone house behind the Catholic church in Hallstatt, Austria. Some of the skeletons are centuries old but none have been in the bone house for more than 12 years, when their lease is up. Whatever the story, the bottom line is...ultra creepy!
