West Highland Way Day 4: Tyndrum to Bridge of Orchy and Beinn Dorain & Beinn an Dothaidh.
Blethering Ben - 98 - Beinn Dorain
A small weather window presented itself, a morning of calm before the next brief thaw followed by high winds and heavy snow rattled in.....so I headed out to Bridge of Orchy to make the most of it. Carpe Diem!
The West Highland Way: Bridge of Orchy Hotel
It wasn't worth video'ing the boring section from Tyndrum to Bridge of Orchy. Most was along an old military road which basically parallels the main highway. This was our last day on the West Highway Way and I understand the hardest portions lie ahead.
However, Bridge of Orchy Hotel is excellent and basically, it in this small village. Good food. Bright and airy rooms in the annex.

River Orchy Bridge Of Orchy Scottish Highlands Scotland
Old tour Scotland video of the River Orchy and the Bridge Of Orchy on visit to the Scottish Highlands. Located at the head of Glen Orchy, it is on the A82 road, has a railway station and is on the West Highland Way long distance path. Nearby prominent peaks include the munros Beinn Dorain and Beinn an Dòthaidh. The bridge was constructed by Government forces as part of a programme of pacification of the Highland Clans which involved the construction of military roads from the Lowlands into the much wilder upland areas of Scotland. It crosses the River Orchy, one of the finest whitewater rivers in the United Kingdom.

Munro Bagging Beinn Dorain, Munro #11 08.04.2018
A great start weatherwise, and even better views on the drive up to Beinn Dorain in Tyndrum. I even stopped of on Loch Lomond shores to record a beautiful timelapse of the loch with Ben Lomond in the distance.
However, mu best timelapse of the morning was the stunning view of Beinn Dorain itself, steeped in sunlight and with just a hint of cloud gently nestling the summit.
The predictedfine weather however, was not o last and the cloud thickened as the morning wore on. By the time I reached the summit the amazing clear skies from four hours earlier were gone and my view back down to the area off the A82 where I took the timelapse was obscured.
Regardless, I thoroughly enjoyed avery moment of Beinn Dorain and the climb up through Coire An Dothaid, was particularly satisfying.
Beinn Dorain is one of the more familiar landmark hills of the Highlands, a graceful, steep grassy pyramid revealed on the drive north from Tyndrum.
Elevation: 1076m
Bridge Of Orchy Hotel, Bridge Of Orchy
Bridge of Orchy Hotel is one of the main hotels between Crianlarich and Glencoe on the A82 in the unmistakably Scottish highlands area of serene and beautiful mid Argyll. Unmissable in a prominent roadside location close to the West Highland Way, a walkers' paradise. Amidst spectacular scenery, overlooked by the great Beinn Dorain, close to Glencoe and the best climbing, walking and skiing in Scotland, in one of these untouched, remote places that aren't full of tourists and over-crowded hotels.
The Lodge Auch Estate, Bridge of Orchy, Argyll - Self Catering Holiday Accommodation
The Lodge on the 31,000 acre Auch Estate surely conforms to everyone's idea of a perfect country shooting lodge. It stands in a magnificent glen between Ben Dorain and Beinn Chaorach, just 16 miles from Glencoe, and right on the West Highland Way - ideal therefore for walkers, climbers and sportsmen, while families, children and pets will enjoy the space, peace and freedom of its lovely surroundings.

West Highland Way - Day 5 Bridge of Orchy to Kingshouse
Day 5: Bridge of Orchy - King's House Hotel, Glencoe. 12 Miles
Allowed ourselves a lie in in the morning after the previous day's effort. Breakfast at 9, and left Bridge of Orchy at around 10. Climbed up over the shoulder of Marn Carraigh through midges and pine forest. Tremendous views from the top back along the road we came down the previous night, but the gravelled path was difficult to walk on.
Arrived an hour or so later at Inveroran, then pressed on over Rannoch Moor, a vast expanse of rocks and heather. Beautifully desolate. Plagued by midges, despite midgie repellent. Weather was pleasant at first, but closing in by the afternoon, and as we made our way off the moor 10 miles later, the mist was descending just behind us.
Total distance so far: 71 miles

Bridge of Orchy Station
In October 1996 I had walked the West Highland Way and camped one night down by the river in Bridge of Orchy. In October 2010 I passed through Bridge of Orchy on my way to Fort William, on the Caledonian Sleeper. The communal breakfast looked good through the station house windows, and I thought this would make an unusual and interesting stopover on the way home. Here then, is the record of that stay in the Bridge of Orchy Station Bunkhouse.
