The Old Street of Beipu Township in Hsinchu County has a higher concentration of Hakka food and heritage than anywhere else in Taiwan. A visit to a Hakka settlement can’t be completed without trying Hakka food and Hakka Pounded Tea, especially the famous fragrant and chewy dried persimmons. All kinds of hand-made Hakka pastries, cakes and preserved vegetables are also worth a try. Old-time freshly made bitter tea oil and distilled camphor oil can also be found on the Old Street.

Heels 2 Wheels: Taiwan - Beipu No. 39 Lei Cha (Episode 5)
In the rustic, charming town of Beipu, Joanne-Marie goes in search of some nutrition for her tired self. Well known in Taiwan as a center of Hakka culture, Beipu is especially recognized for production of dongfang meiren tea （东方美人茶）and its special Hakkanese blends of tea and nuts called lēichá (擂茶), also known as Thunder Tea.
Here, she tries her hand at making her own Lei Cha, and really works out a sweat! The process of grinding alone took 45 minutes, and needless to say, the process of consuming the product took nothing less than 5 minutess. So while you are wondering whether or not it's worth it, have a look at our photos and you will be convinced it is. The iconic No. 39 Beipu Lei Cha stall is beautifully decorated to maintain its traditional roots and infuse nostalgia, so a trip there for any Hakka or culture-loving individual is a must!

Discover the Authentic Hakka Community in Hsinchu County
During the 19th century, many Hakka left Guangdong Province to settle in the town of Beipu, which is located in current day Hsinchu County. The Jinguangfu meeting hall, which has been declared a first-class historic site, was the political and economic center of Hakka life. Just opposite is another historic site, Tian Shui Hall. This solid structure was built to withstand the wind and offer safety from any attack. It is an elegant example of traditional Hakka architecture. The rich Hakka culture and abundance of historic sites make Beipu an attractive place to visit.
Taiwan Part 1: A Visit to a Hakka Family
When culinary specialist Kentetsu Koh explores Taipei, he comes across a fragrant cup of tea. This encounter leads him to a tea farm in an area called Beipu. At the home of a Hakka family, he's treated to a tea called Oriental Beauty. It is grown in a way that allows bugs to sweeten it up by chewing on the leaves. Kentetsu also tries some authentic Hakka dishes made from preserved ingredients such as mustard greens that have been fermented more than three months and dried white radish that's been aged five years.

There cold springs in Beipu Township, Hsinchu County, produce weakly alkaline carbonic acid water at temperatures of 10 to 15 degrees Celsius.
The clear waters of the Daping River in Waiping Village of Beipu Township flow through green hilly country that offers a rich variety of beautiful scenery, with water plunging over dams adding a special attraction to the area.

Taiwan Solo Day Trip | Lion's Head Mountain（獅頭山）, Nanzhuang（南庄）, Beipu（北埔）
I went off all by myself to Lion's Head Mountain and ended up hanging out with 15+ local Taiwanese people who took care of me all day and brought me to two more amazing places!
Beautiful scenery and temples, delicious vegan Hakka food, friendly and fun locals, what more can I ask for?
Here's my first vlog enjoy :)
P.S. I do NOT encourage following just any stranger, Taiwan is a very safe country but even then I would never dare ride a stranger's car during nighttime and trust your instincts when you choose who you engage with. I was offered a ride from Longmenkou to Nanzhuang as well, but I did not feel 100% safe with the person in question so waited for the bus instead, and I admit I was slightly wary of riding the guy's car at 2:44, at least he was a friend of the lady selling food I had tea with I trusted, it was daytime and the streets were busy too. In any case, please make sure your family and some friends in the country know where you're going if you are traveling alone!
Itinerary & Budget: From NCTU campus I got a 10min ride on a scooter to Zhubei Sheraton station, I was initially planning to walk 6km but it was raining. There, I took the bus heading to Shitoushan ( a day pass ticket is 100NTD. After Quanhua temple, I got off the mountain (about 20-25min walk) and took the local bus from Longmenkou to Nanzhuang Old Street (27NTD). To get to Beipu, I went back through the mountain to where I got off at Shitoushan, kind locals gave me a ride but you can take the same bus again for 2 stops.
All the attractions are free so I only spent money on transport and food (but again, I received so much generosity from locals). For food, the little eats in Nanzhuang and Beipu range from 15-100NTD each, and the vegan lunch at Quanhua temple is on donation so you pay what you like.
TAIWAN TEA FARM/HSINCHU OLD STREET/FARM ANIMALS
Day 2 of our company team building. We were taught how to make a special tea, we ate some delicious lunch and headed out to an old street in Hsinchu to explore!! This company trip really reminds me of going on a field trip in elementary school! Wow so many new places to discover in Hsinchu! I must come back and explore more!
