5 THINGS TO DO IN BEITOU
1. Hot Springs (05:17)
On leaving MRT Xinbeitou Station, you will immediately see the entrance to Beitou Hot Spring Park across the main road, to the right. Take a walk through this long and narrow park, and check out the shallow Beitou Stream, steaming with hot-spring water. About two-thirds of the way through the park, which slopes upward from the main road, you’ll spot a beautifully restored historic building, today home to the Beitou Hot Spring Museum (hotspringmuseum.taipei). This was originally a public bathhouse, built in 1913, at the time the largest of its kind in East Asia. Here you can learn about the history of hot-spring bathing in Beitou while, among other things, viewing a restored Romanesque pool with Roman-style columns as well as a Japanese-style tatami post-bathing rest area.
There is a wide range of options in Beitou for your own hot-spring bathing, including upscale hot-spring hotels such as the Grand View Resort Beitou (gvrb.com.tw). If you are on a limited budget, however, and just want to experience the simple pleasures of outdoor-pool soaking together with local hot-spring lovers, head to the Beitou outdoor public hot springs, formally called the Millenium Hot Spring, a few minutes on foot west of the hot-spring museum along Zhongshan Road (open daily; tickets NT$40). For more info about hot-spring bathing options in Beitou and around Taiwan, visit taiwanhotspring.net.
2. Public Library (04:19)
Also located inside Beitou Hot Spring Park, between the museum and the public pools, is an interesting building that resembles a giant ark. This is the Beitou Branch of the Taipei Public Library, an ultra-efficient modern building constructed with protection of the environment in mind and offering a pleasant space for reading and studying. Opened to the public in 2006, the library is housed in an award-winning green building with such features as solar panels on the roof, rainfall capturing/storage systems, and a design that keeps power consumption to a minimum.
3. Thermal Valley (06:32)
At the far, upper end of the hot-spring park, look left and you’ll spot the entrance to Thermal Valley, the source of the park area’s sulfurous hot-spring water. Surrounded by trees, this deep, rock-strewn depression was created long ago by a volcanic burst. The sulfurous waters in the depression’s large pool bubble and spit, the steam sometimes filling the entire little valley on cool days. The Ketagalan people who once lived in the area called the valley “Patauw,” meaning “witch” or “sorceress.” “Beitou” is a bastardization of this original name.
4. Beitou Museum (8:23)
Further uphill from the hot-spring park and the thermal-spring valley, on Youya Road, is the Beitou Museum (beitoumuseum.org.tw), an excellent place to learn more about Beitou’s history, indigenous culture, and the Japanese colonial era – the museum building was original constructed in 1921 as a fancy hot-spring hotel for the Japanese elite – and also to taste fine cuisine (Kaiseki-style) and take in irregular cultural performances (in a spacious tatami room).
5. Xinbeitou Historic Station (00:50)
Back beside MRT Xinbeitou Station is another heritage building you don’t want to miss, the Xinbeitou Historic Station (xbths.taipei). Located in the small park on the southern side of the station, this important work of heritage architecture was reopened earlier this year. Originally built in 1916, the station was dismantled in 1988 to make room for the MRT station, and was then purchased, rebuilt, and displayed at the Taiwan Folk Village in Changhua County, central Taiwan, before being returned to Taipei in 2013. After being painstakingly restored once again over a period of four years, the station has now become one of the most iconic historic attractions in the city.

Beitou Museum (北投文物馆)
The only remaining all-wood two-story Japanese style building in Taiwan, the Beitou Museum is located on a secluded mountain slope and was designated as a historical site by the city government in 1998.
Originally the Kazan Hotel, the building was used during the Japanese era as lodging for Kamikaze pilots during World War II. The grounds have changed ownership over the years, and is currently managed by the Fu Lin Culture Foundation which completed a renovation of the complex in 2008.
Today, as a museum, the grounds are home to cultural exhibitions and performances, with a heavy focus on Japanese culture and its impact on Taiwan and specifically the Beitou Hot Springs (北投溫泉) area. The museum also contains over 4,000 artefacts showcasing Taiwanese and Aboriginal culture, rotating exhibits every 6 months.
In the rear of the main building is a lovely Japanese-style teahouse where visitors can relax and enjoy views of Taipei City.
The museum is also well known for their preparation of traditional Japanese vegetarian Kaiseki meals.

Entrance in the Thermal Valley is absolutely free!!! There are other resorts around the area where you can pay to go on a hot spring bath.
3rd stop is the Tamsui Old Street. Just take the MRT Tamsui Station, exit and turn left. There are so much street foods in here!! Waaaa! Eating while watching the sunset by the river.
We planned to go to the Tamsui Lover's Bridge which is also near the Old Street but it's getting late so yeah, change of plans!

Beitou Hot Springs Tour and HUGE Countryside Taiwanese Chinese Food Feast! (Day 7)

Day 7 in Taiwan, was one of our best days so far. Ying and I woke up at our new hotel, and we decided to go on a quick day trip to Beitou hot springs, a famous area in Taipei, where there’s a natural hot water spring, and home to quite a lot of history, attractions and relaxing hotels. It was very easy to get from central Taipei to Beitou by using public transportation on the train, and it took about 30 minutes to get from central Taipei to Xin Beitou station. From Xin Beitou station, we walked over to the hot springs area.
2:15 Beitou Public Library
The first place we arrived on our day trip to Beitou hot springs was the Beitou Public Library. The library is fully in use, but the reason it’s popular to visit and it’s kind of an attraction is because of its unique architecture and its eco friendly design. We didn’t spend more than a few minutes there, but just looked at it from the outside and then took a quick peek inside.
2:45 Beitou Hot Springs Museum
One of the main attractions at Beitou is the hot springs museum, originally the original Japanese bathhouse in Beitou. It’s not a huge museum, and the price is free, so it’s a good place to just check out for a few minutes before moving on.
3:29 Beitou Plum Garden
I thought it was just going to be a garden with plums, but it was actually the former home of a famous Chinese calligrapher. The house was another quick stop on our day trip, but worth the quick visit.
3:52 Beitou Hot Springs - Public Bath
The time finally came to visit the main attraction at Beitou, the hot springs. They have many higher end spas and hotels with private baths, but I went for the public Taiwanese style hot spring bath. They didn’t allow any photography inside, but it was pretty nice and I enjoyed soaking in the natural hot water for a few minutes before moving on with our day.
4:54 Thermal Valley
One of the most famous things to see in Beitou is the Thermal Valley, a big pool of water that’s boiling hot and is the source of the hot springs for Beitou. The water is really hot and there’s not swimming so it’s more of just a viewpoint and a place to take photos.
While there, we met up with Joe, Raymond, and his Father, by random chance. They were visiting from California and were spending the day at the Beitou hot springs and were en-route to have lunch and go to another hot spring and invited us to go along with them.
6:32 Epic Taiwanese Country Style Farm Lunch
Along with Joe, Raymond, and his Father, we drove through the mountains and after about 45 minutes we arrived at a small local style hot spring where we were going to have lunch. They did all the ordering and we were soon faced with what was one of the best Taiwanese food meals I had the entire trip to Taiwan. All the food was home style cooked, and tasted very country style, and everything was delicious. I especially enjoyed the deer on the hot plate and the roast quail.
On Day 7 in Taiwan, we planned to just take a day trip to Beitou hot springs, but completely unplanned, it turned into one of the best days of our trip and one of the best meals as well.
Big thank you to Joe, Raymond, and his Father for inviting us!

World's Top Hot Springs District-Beitou, Taiwan
Beitou Hot Springs District in Taipei City, Taiwan is one of the largest hot springs districts in the world. It's original Japanese influence is found in it's heritage buildings and wonderfully landscaped gardens. Originally developed during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan near the beginning of the 20th century, it's a popular destination for residents of Taipei with it's convenient location only 25 minutes from the city's Main Station(train/MRT station).
Plum Garden was built towards the end of the 1930’s as a retreat and villa for Mr. Youren Yu, a calligraphy master who would vacation here in the summer. Plum Garden was rated as a historical site by the Taipei City government in 2006. It is a traditional Japanese style residential building equipped with an air raid shelter.
The home showcases the artistry of Mr. Youren Yu.
The Beitou Hot Springs Museum was built in 1913 as the Beitou Public Bathouse at the time the largest bathhouse in East Asia. But by World War ll the building had been abandoned. While on a field trip in 1994 a group of teachers and students from the Beitou Elementary School discovered that the bathouse was still abandoned and petitioned for the conversation of the site. By 1998 the bathouse had been restored and opened to the public as the Beitou Hot Springs Museum.
In it’s glory days Beitou with it’s hot springs culture and romantic atmosphere became the backdrop for many films earning it the nickname the Hollywood of the Taiwanese film industry.
Visiting the Beitou Museum (Taipei, Taiwan)
The Beitou Museum / 北投文物館 or sometimes called Taiwan Folk Arts Museum is a museum in Beitou District, Taipei. The museum building was originally built in 1921 as Kazan Hotel, the best hot spring hotel during the Japanese rule. During WWII, the hotel was used by Japanese Kamikaze squadron pilots, and the tatami room on the second floor was where they would have their last meal before the final flight of their lives.
After handover of Taiwan to the Republic of China (ROC) in 1945, the ROC Ministry of Foreign Affairs took over the building and converted it into dormitory. It was then later be given the name Old Moon Manor due to its use as the set for a traditional costume drama. The building was subsequently taken over by the museum founder and established the Taiwan Folk Art and Antique House, dedicated to preserving folk relics and aboriginal art from earlier times. The name was later changed to Beitou Museum until now.
In 1998, the museum building was designated a historic site by the Taipei City Government. It is one of the largest free standing wooden structures remaining in Taiwan from the Japanese colonial era. Restoration was made to the building starting 2002 for five years and the building was reopened to the public in 2008.
In the rear of the main building is a Japanese-style teahouse where visitors can relax and enjoy views of Taipei City.

What To Do in Taipei: Beitou
Location: Taipei, Taiwan
Nearest MRT Station: Xinbeitou
So here is another brilliant place to be whilst travelling to Taipei! This location is well known for its hot springs and spa.
Beitou has been well known for its natural resources and wonderful scenery for a long period of time. Since the Qing Dynasty, Beitou has been well known for the extraction of sulphur, which is the main component of the Beitou Hot Spring. It has two faces. Old Beitou is the area where the local people have lived and worked for over a century and is located around Beitou MRT Station and Beitou Market, while Xin Beitou (New Beitou) is the area around Xin Beitou MRT Station and Qinshui Park that was developed as a hot spring resort during the Japanese era (1895-1945).
There are quite a few places to see at Beitou apart from the ones mentioned in the video:
- Beitou Hot Springs Museum
- Ketagalan Cultural Center
- The world-famous Yangmingshan National Park
- Puji Temple and others
I think I was being a bit too optimistic in the video, Beitou deserves a full day of your time, actually!
So, that is about it! Feel free to share your comments and thoughts about the video or Beitou itself!!

A tour through Beitou museum recalls the discovery of this idyllic settings, through a labyrinth of charmed artifacts on display. Displayed relics and documents, reveal the story of Beitou's hot spring district to the visiting public. Open Tuesdays to Sundays (closed on Mondays).
