FUN! Hot springs and the Green Library in Beitou Taipei Taiwan
One of the best experiences in Taiwan taking a short bus ride out of Taipei city and enjoy a day trip to Beitou. The nice relaxing heat of Hot Springs in Beitou, we visited both the public and private hot springs. The Beitou Thermal Valley was cool and no, we couldn't go take a dip in it. I had the best Lu Rou Fan there in Beitou!!!

Beitou Hot Springs Tour and HUGE Countryside Taiwanese Chinese Food Feast! (Day 7)

Day 7 in Taiwan, was one of our best days so far. Ying and I woke up at our new hotel, and we decided to go on a quick day trip to Beitou hot springs, a famous area in Taipei, where there’s a natural hot water spring, and home to quite a lot of history, attractions and relaxing hotels. It was very easy to get from central Taipei to Beitou by using public transportation on the train, and it took about 30 minutes to get from central Taipei to Xin Beitou station. From Xin Beitou station, we walked over to the hot springs area.
2:15 Beitou Public Library
The first place we arrived on our day trip to Beitou hot springs was the Beitou Public Library. The library is fully in use, but the reason it’s popular to visit and it’s kind of an attraction is because of its unique architecture and its eco friendly design. We didn’t spend more than a few minutes there, but just looked at it from the outside and then took a quick peek inside.
2:45 Beitou Hot Springs Museum
One of the main attractions at Beitou is the hot springs museum, originally the original Japanese bathhouse in Beitou. It’s not a huge museum, and the price is free, so it’s a good place to just check out for a few minutes before moving on.
3:29 Beitou Plum Garden
I thought it was just going to be a garden with plums, but it was actually the former home of a famous Chinese calligrapher. The house was another quick stop on our day trip, but worth the quick visit.
3:52 Beitou Hot Springs - Public Bath
The time finally came to visit the main attraction at Beitou, the hot springs. They have many higher end spas and hotels with private baths, but I went for the public Taiwanese style hot spring bath. They didn’t allow any photography inside, but it was pretty nice and I enjoyed soaking in the natural hot water for a few minutes before moving on with our day.
4:54 Thermal Valley
One of the most famous things to see in Beitou is the Thermal Valley, a big pool of water that’s boiling hot and is the source of the hot springs for Beitou. The water is really hot and there’s not swimming so it’s more of just a viewpoint and a place to take photos.
While there, we met up with Joe, Raymond, and his Father, by random chance. They were visiting from California and were spending the day at the Beitou hot springs and were en-route to have lunch and go to another hot spring and invited us to go along with them.
6:32 Epic Taiwanese Country Style Farm Lunch
Along with Joe, Raymond, and his Father, we drove through the mountains and after about 45 minutes we arrived at a small local style hot spring where we were going to have lunch. They did all the ordering and we were soon faced with what was one of the best Taiwanese food meals I had the entire trip to Taiwan. All the food was home style cooked, and tasted very country style, and everything was delicious. I especially enjoyed the deer on the hot plate and the roast quail.
On Day 7 in Taiwan, we planned to just take a day trip to Beitou hot springs, but completely unplanned, it turned into one of the best days of our trip and one of the best meals as well.
Big thank you to Joe, Raymond, and his Father for inviting us!

5 THINGS TO DO IN BEITOU
1. Hot Springs (05:17)
On leaving MRT Xinbeitou Station, you will immediately see the entrance to Beitou Hot Spring Park across the main road, to the right. Take a walk through this long and narrow park, and check out the shallow Beitou Stream, steaming with hot-spring water. About two-thirds of the way through the park, which slopes upward from the main road, you’ll spot a beautifully restored historic building, today home to the Beitou Hot Spring Museum (hotspringmuseum.taipei). This was originally a public bathhouse, built in 1913, at the time the largest of its kind in East Asia. Here you can learn about the history of hot-spring bathing in Beitou while, among other things, viewing a restored Romanesque pool with Roman-style columns as well as a Japanese-style tatami post-bathing rest area.
There is a wide range of options in Beitou for your own hot-spring bathing, including upscale hot-spring hotels such as the Grand View Resort Beitou (gvrb.com.tw). If you are on a limited budget, however, and just want to experience the simple pleasures of outdoor-pool soaking together with local hot-spring lovers, head to the Beitou outdoor public hot springs, formally called the Millenium Hot Spring, a few minutes on foot west of the hot-spring museum along Zhongshan Road (open daily; tickets NT$40). For more info about hot-spring bathing options in Beitou and around Taiwan, visit taiwanhotspring.net.
2. Public Library (04:19)
Also located inside Beitou Hot Spring Park, between the museum and the public pools, is an interesting building that resembles a giant ark. This is the Beitou Branch of the Taipei Public Library, an ultra-efficient modern building constructed with protection of the environment in mind and offering a pleasant space for reading and studying. Opened to the public in 2006, the library is housed in an award-winning green building with such features as solar panels on the roof, rainfall capturing/storage systems, and a design that keeps power consumption to a minimum.
3. Thermal Valley (06:32)
At the far, upper end of the hot-spring park, look left and you’ll spot the entrance to Thermal Valley, the source of the park area’s sulfurous hot-spring water. Surrounded by trees, this deep, rock-strewn depression was created long ago by a volcanic burst. The sulfurous waters in the depression’s large pool bubble and spit, the steam sometimes filling the entire little valley on cool days. The Ketagalan people who once lived in the area called the valley “Patauw,” meaning “witch” or “sorceress.” “Beitou” is a bastardization of this original name.
4. Beitou Museum (8:23)
Further uphill from the hot-spring park and the thermal-spring valley, on Youya Road, is the Beitou Museum (beitoumuseum.org.tw), an excellent place to learn more about Beitou’s history, indigenous culture, and the Japanese colonial era – the museum building was original constructed in 1921 as a fancy hot-spring hotel for the Japanese elite – and also to taste fine cuisine (Kaiseki-style) and take in irregular cultural performances (in a spacious tatami room).
5. Xinbeitou Historic Station (00:50)
Back beside MRT Xinbeitou Station is another heritage building you don’t want to miss, the Xinbeitou Historic Station (xbths.taipei). Located in the small park on the southern side of the station, this important work of heritage architecture was reopened earlier this year. Originally built in 1916, the station was dismantled in 1988 to make room for the MRT station, and was then purchased, rebuilt, and displayed at the Taiwan Folk Village in Changhua County, central Taiwan, before being returned to Taipei in 2013. After being painstakingly restored once again over a period of four years, the station has now become one of the most iconic historic attractions in the city.

A Visit to Taipei Public Library, Beitou Branch
Located within Beitou Park in Beitou Hot Spring area of Taipei City, Taiwan, Taipei Public Library Beitou Branch, or Beitou Library is Taiwan’s first green library opened in November, 2006. Designed by the Taiwanese firm Bio-Architecture Formosana, Beitou Library is fitted with eco-friendly features and settings making it one of the most energy-efficient and environmental-friendly architectures of East Asia.
Beitou Library plays an active role in bettering the environment by being energy and water efficient. The library is a wooden building with large windows that save electricity in different ways. The woods that used to build the library are woods from managed forests rather than primary or rainforests. The thoughtful design with large windows is to save energy as the large amount of windows allow natural light to substitute interior lighting, and ventilation reduces the need for fans and air-conditioning.
Partial roof of the library is covered by photovoltaic cells to converts sunlight into electricity, and appointed with 20 centimeters of soil to provide thermal insulation. Beitou Library also conserves water by capturing rainfall and stored to use for the library’s toilets. Thoughtfully designed with eco-friendly features, Beitou Library is a sanctuary from the bustling Taipei City of concrete buildings.
Entirely made of wood and green features, Beitou Library is an excellent Taipei stop for its architectural uniqueness, as well as more than 20,000 English and Chinese literature for visitors to peruse at their leisure.
Apart from visiting Beitou Library, Beitou Hot Spring Museum, Katagalan Culture Center, Geothermal Valley and many other important Beitou attractions are just within a short walk for one to experience a colorful Taipei travel.

台北 | TAIPEI VLOG: Tamsui & Beitou
Made my way to Tamsui/Danshui today by Victoria's recommendation. If you're ever in Taiwan I definitely recommend you go as well ! :) You're gonna have the most amazing tasting squid balls. Then since I still had a lot of time left, I decided to go to the Beitou Hot Springs ! Unfortunately I didn't end up dipping into any of the hot springs myself, but it was still cool seeing them! Ended off the night with a walk around Shilin Night Market.

VLOG | Taipei Taiwan | Beitou, Hotspring, Din Tai Fung, St. Christopher's Church | Day 3
On our third day in Taipei, Taiwan, we went to so many places.
First, we went to Beitou where we visited the Beitou Public Library - this place was divine! I wish I had my laptop/book. It's the perfect place to chill!
After that, we went to the Open Air Hot Spring but I was hesitant since it was a public bath and I'm not really comfortable. That's why we decided to go to Atami Hotel - we paid 600NTD for 1 hr, good for 2 people for a private bath.
We had our late lunch at Sushi Express near Beitou Park since we were really hungry and we just wanted to eat something ASAP. It was one of our fancier meals. LOL. Most of the food we ate were bought on the streets. HAHAHA
After which, we went to the Nangnang Exhibition area. We stayed in this area because we did not want to be late for the 6pm mass at St. Christopher's Church. We spent our time walking around the area and visiting Taipei Fine Arts museum.
When we were inside Taipei Fine Arts museum, I felt really tired and quite uninterested so I told Jed to just leave me at the canteen and go around the area since he really wanted to.
Around 4:45, we started walking towards St. Christopher's Church to hear the 6pm Simbang Gabi Mass. Simbang Gabi - is a Filipino tradition where you attend 9 days of masses; Novena masses.
After hearing mass, we hopped on a bus to go to SOGO where we found Din Tai Fung. Generally, Din Tai Fung in Taiwan has the same quality and price in Manila.
Our last stop was Shilin Public Market. Since it was our last day in Taiwan, we spent most of what's left of our NTD's to buy Pasalubong or gifts for our family and friends.
Taiwan was really amazing! Can't wait to go back in March 2017!!! :D

FROM THE SIGN AT THE THERMAL VALLEY:
1. Beitou Thermal Valley is 3,500 square meters, a depression formed before the volcano eruption. The hot spring here may reach over 90°C in some areas, and is the hottest spring in Datun Volcano Group. It was open to public to cook eggs and a lot of scalding issues occured and the hot spring was also contaminated. In 1993, the Taipei City Council decided this place should be administered as other water sources.
2. The hot spring comes from deep inside the volcano, and it is acidified with volcanic gas. The hot water rises to the earth surface and mixes with surface water to form the hot spring. It is called green sulfur as the water is light green, like jade, and contains a lot of sulfate minerals and traces of radium, a radioactive matter. After a long period of sedimentation, it crystalizes on the rock bed of Beitou Stream. It is then called hokutolite, Beitou Rock in Chinese, which is the only rare mineral named after a place name in Taiwan. It is only discovered in Beitou and Tamagawa Hot Spring in Senboku, Japan. Parts of Beitou Stream have been designated as Hokutolite Nature Reserve and public access is prohibited. The hokutolite is on display in Beitou Hot Spring Museum and Beitou Thermal Valley.
3. It is said the green sulfur spring has healing and rehabilitation effects. The hot spring is available to hot spring users in Xinbeitou and the Beitou Public Hot Spring, commissioned by Taipei Water Department.
We are also on Facebook and Instagram:
Wiki writes about Beitou, Beitou District is the northernmost of the twelve districts of Taipei City, Taiwan. The historical spelling of the district is Peitou. The name originates from the Ketagalan word Kipatauw, meaning witch. Beitou is the most mountainous and highest of Taipei's districts, encompassing a meadow with rivers running through the valley which have abundant steam rising from them; the result of geothermal warming. The valley is often surrounded by mist shrouding the trees and grass. Beitou is famous for its hot springs.[1] In March 2012, it was named one of the Top 10 Small Tourist Towns by the Tourism Bureau of Taiwan...

So go to the end of the old street past the wild boar sausage stand, you'll see a bridge crossing the river on the right, go over that and take a left, you'll see a mural of deer on the wall to the right and the Fish Spa is across from that - the sign is small but the downstairs sells icecream/ice treats.

Beitou Thermal Valley (地熱谷), Taipei, Taiwan, 11/26/2013
Beitou Thermal Valley or Geothermal Valley(地熱谷) is a volcanic crater filled with steaming natural sulfuric hot spring water. During the Japanese colonial era, the valley was known as one of Taiwan's eight great natural beauties and the magical translucent green colored waters gave rise to one of its pet names, Jade Springs Valley. The mineral composition of the rare green sulfur spring waters can only be found in two locations in the world, here in Beitou and in Akita, Japan.
The temperatures of the waters can reach up to 100°C (212°F), making them unsuitable for bathing. However, the curling steamy mist that rises up from the waters can climb as high as 100 meters into the sky, and depending on the winds, can completely engulf themselves around visitors, making for a spectacular sight. The eery steam is also the reason for the area's other nickname, Hell Valley. Despite being the hottest spring in the area, it is said that the residual heat source is insufficient to sustain another volcanic eruption, so the valley's days may be numbered.
