Lebanon's Hash Farms
Subscribe to VICE News here:
Cannabis cultivation in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley is an ancient practice that dates back to the beginning of recorded history. During the Lebanese civil war between 1975-1990, it provided funding for feuding militias and turned Lebanon into one of the world's largest hashish exporters.
Today, Lebanon's feuding militias are still using drugs as a source of income. Under international pressure, the Lebanese government is cracking down on smaller Cannabis farmers while drug lords continue to act with impunity. Security forces confronting armed farmers defending their crops have lead to bloody gun battles between the warring sides. VICE News hung out with some of the farmers to learn about Lebanon's ancient hashish industry and see how crooked politicians are profiting from the chaos.

The Beqaa Valley, Lebanon, spectacular view
Our host Jonathan tells about the valley and the position where we are. The Beqaa, or Bekaa, is a fertile valley in Lebanon, located about 30 km (19 mi) east of Beirut. The valley is situated between the Mount Lebanon to the west and the Anti-Lebanon Mountains to the east. It forms the northeasternmost extension of the Great Rift Valley, which stretches from Syria through the Red Sea into Africa. Beqaa Valley is about 120 km (about 75 miles) in length and has an average width of about 16 km (about 10 miles).

Lebanon's Hash Industry | DW English
Lebanon’s underground cannabis industry already generates annual exports estimated to be worth 200 million US dollars. Now the Lebanese government is considering legalizing the cultivation of cannabis for medical purposes, in an effort to boost its cash-strapped economy. But locals in the Bekaa valley, where the plant has been grown for decades, are skeptical of the government's intentions.

Will Lebanon Be the First to Legalize Cannabis in the Arab World?
Lebanon is about to take a historic step for the Arab World with a proposed bill to legalize the cultivation of cannabis for medical use. But in the fertile Bekaa valley in Eastern Lebanon, where communities have been growing cannabis for generations, this news has not gone down well.
VICE’s Rony Karkar finds out why Lebanon is so keen to legalize cannabis, and travels to the village of Yammouneh, where one of the main cannabis farming communities live, to find out why they think they’ll lose out if their livelihood becomes legal.

Israels 1982 War in Lebanon
From the TV series Modern Warfare.
The first War I fought in on a Dabur class patrol boat off Sidon, Tyre and Beirut.
The 1982 Lebanon War, dubbed Operation Peace for Galilee (Hebrew: מבצע שלום הגליל, or מבצע שלג Mivtsa Shlom HaGalil or Mivtsa Sheleg) by the Israeli government, later known in Israel as the Lebanon War or the First Lebanon War (Hebrew: מלחמת לבנון הראשונה, Milhemet Levanon Harishona), and known in Lebanon as the invasion (Arabic: الاجتياح, Al-ijtiyāḥ), began on 6 June 1982, when the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) invaded southern Lebanon, after repeated attacks and counter-attacks between the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) operating in southern Lebanon and the IDF that had caused civilian casualties on both sides of the border.[16][17][18] The military operation was launched after gunmen from Abu Nidal's organization attempted to assassinate Shlomo Argov, Israel's ambassador to the United Kingdom. Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin blamed Abu Nidal's enemy, the PLO, for the incident,[19][20] and treated the incident as a casus belli for the invasion.[21][22][i]
After attacking the PLO – as well as Syrian, leftist, and Muslim Lebanese forces – the Israeli military, in cooperation with the Maronite allies and the self-proclaimed Free Lebanon State, occupied southern Lebanon, eventually surrounding the PLO and elements of the Syrian Army. Surrounded in West Beirut and subjected to heavy
Documentary on the communities that harvest red hash in Lebanon | Heart Of Sky | 4:3 Short Film
Playing in the minimal spaces between documentary and fiction, Heart of Sky is a moving portrait of the farming communities that cultivate and harvest Lebanese Red hashish in the Bekaa valley, between the mountains of eastern Lebanon.
Soundtracked by Damian Lazarus & The Ancient Moons, the film is a blend of raw intimacy and cinematic transcendence paints a profound and elevated picture of the beating hearts and tender hands that work the fields of the illegal industry. The film points a lens that is at the same time acute and spectral, revealing glimpses of the realities behind the curtain of smoke.
Despite difficult working conditions and an existence that seems suspended between the valley and the sky, the people of the village live, love and labour with humble gratitude for the gifts of the earth, and with faith in God and in each other.
► Director Jessy Moussallem was given free rein to work with the music of Damian Lazarus & The Ancient Moons, using sounds and samples. The film features numerous tracks from their new album ‘Heart of Sky’.
