Bulgaria Beklemeto (Troyan) Pass Arc of Liberty Monument Climb
Beklemeto Pass or Troyan Pass ( Bulgarian: Троянски проход) is a mountain pass in the Bulgarian Balkan Mountains at 1520 meters above sea level.
On one of the peaks near the pass there is a monument named Arc of Liberty, dedicated to the victory of the Russian army in January 1878 capturing the pass, leading to the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman regime. The monument also commemorates the Bulgarian - Russian unity following World War II.
Designed by architect Georgi Stoilov and sculptor Velichko Minekov, its height is 37 meters. The wonderful Communist-Brutalist structure contains staircases on both legs, leading to a complex of connected spaces on the upper horizontal part. From there, a ladder leads to the roof, from which a magnificent view of the Balkan range (Stara Planina) can be seen.
Naturally the climb is not an official part of a visit to the site, thus exploring the monument from the inside out is a wonderful urban exploration.
This visit documentation is a call for preservation and maintenance of this unique monument, which is part of the Bulgarian history and a fine architectural piece.

Sostra was a stronghold of a military cohort of about 1000 people and an important military unit on the ancient road Eskus - Philipopolis. Besides the fortress, parts of which are visible today, Sostra was actually a big roadside complex including a village situated outside of the fortress walls. Construction of the fortress began in 147, by a order of Emperor Antoninus Pius, and during its existence has been repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt again. The castle finished its existence in the V century.
The Monastery of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God (Bulgarian: Троянски манастир „Успение Богородично“) or, as it is more commonly called, the Troyan Monastery is the third largest monastery in Bulgaria. It is located in the northern part of the country in the Balkan mountains and was founded no later than the end of the 16th century.

Epic uphill ride along the ancient road to mountain pass Троянски проход (Troyan Pass), situated at the heart of Balkan mountain range in central Bulgaria. Road surface here is not exactly ideal, so use common sense, it goes to the very top where you'll find shade under the liberation monument at about 1600m above sea level.
