It's a 10 scale mile model garden railway of 1/32 scale, in a 1/12 scale miniature village. The line was started circa 1929 and has been updated continuously for 80 years. We strapped a camera to the front of one of the engines and sent it off - we've added some subtitles so you can see what you're passing. Model railways rock.
The huge model railway has evolved since those early years, from Bassett-Lowke LNER and GWR outline stock through to modern image British Rail - when at one time, class 47, class 37, Hymek, western class 53, intercity 125 and even DMU stock ran. In the early 1990s, interest in the railway's heritage regained, and it was decided to revert to a classic 1930s appearance. Therefore you'll now see classic GWR railmotors, EMU, GWR 94xx tank locos, LMS Jinty, SR Q Class and many more freelance locos on the route.
The whole system is controlled by computer, interlocked with hundreds of relays for points and signal operation. Note that the signals are missing in this video, as they are currently all being refurbished. The complex trackwork around Maryloo station is controlled by a Westinghouse lever frame in the signal box (where this video begins and ends) when the signalman wants to intervene. This train was preset to run non-stop - but of course would need to stop if another train was in the block ahead of it. This video took four takes to get right - we had to be nimble with the manual signals to make sure no trains ahead of this one stopped progress, or made it wait on the single track sections! Usually there are 9 to 11 trains in operation at any one time; a selection of them are seen on this video. Perhaps we should get a Thomas The Tank Engine for the line...?
We're in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire - which is on the Chiltern Railways route from London Marylebone to High Wycombe, Banbury and Birmingham.
hope you enjoy it as much as we did making it!

Bekonscot Model Village and Railway 02.08.2015
Bekonscot Model Village and Railway, located in the town of Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire. This is the oldest and most famous model village in the world - 'A little piece of history that is forever England'. The model village portrays England mostly in the 1930's. These shots were taken on the 2nd August 2015.
Bekonscot was first created by Beaconsfield resident, accountant Roland Callingham in 1928, when his wife announced that either she left or the railway left. Thus the railway moved outdoors. Drawing in help from his staff, they developed the model landscape portraying rural England at the time.
As well as the village and it's surroundings, Bekonscot contains one of the UK's finest outdoor Gauge 1 railways. The network has more than ten locomotives, links seven stations and runs on 8.5 scale miles (450 real metres) of track.
A truly wonderful and excellent model village and railway, I urge anyone to visit (young or old) if you get the chance to do so!

Bekonscot Model Village and Railway, the oldest original model village in the world
Bekonscot in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, is the oldest original model village in the world.
It portrays aspects of England mostly dating from the 1930s. Bekonscot has been run by the Church Army since 1978 and donates large amounts of money to charity. It has raised the equivalent of almost £5,000,000 so far and has been visited by more than 14,000,000 visitors.
Bekonscot was first created by Beaconsfield resident, accountant Roland Callingham (1881–1961), in the 1920s. He developed the master plan for his miniature empire as an addition to his large back garden, drawing in help from his staff: the gardener, cook, maid and chauffeur. Together they developed the model landscape portraying rural England at the time. The swimming pool became the first sea and the undulating rockeries were built up as hills. Bassett-Lowke, the large-scale model railway manufacturers, were commissioned to build an extensive Gauge 1 railway network for the project. Callingham named the village 'Bekonscot' after Beaconsfield and Ascot where he previously lived.
It was not conceived as a commercial visitor attraction but as a plaything to entertain Roland and his guests. It was only after 1930 that its existence became widely known, catching the imagination of the press and public alike. Frequent newsreels such as Pathé, international and national newspaper coverage ensured a steady stream of visitors, all of whom were invited to make a donation to the Railway Benevolent Institution.
The site is approximately two acres of which just over half is a miniature 1:12 landscape. Buildings are constructed in natural materials, concrete, or dense foamboard; many are originals from the 1920s.
There are six model villages set within the miniature landscape. These are entirely fictional towns, but many buildings within them are based on UK prototypes. Successive generations of model makers, gardeners and craftsmen have left their mark on their subjects, which display a wide range of vernacular architectural styles.
