Lisbon Belem Tower and Monument to the Discoveries
Along the Lisbon waterfront are the two most famous monuments in Belem which stand as symbols of Portugal’s 16th century naval voyages: The Tower of Belem and the Monument to the Discoveries.
To understand the history of Portugal, we need to consider their spectacular maritime discoveries 500 years ago. Vasco da Gama was the first to sail around Africa and discover the ocean route to Asia, opening up a vast trade network that made Portugal rich. Pedro Cabral discovered Brazil in 1500, which Portugal claimed as their largest colony, and Portuguese navigators were the first to sail to China, in 1542. After the initial Portuguese discoveries other European countries joined in the hunt for colonies and the world would never be the same again. This was the beginning of the modern world and the start of global trade and communications.
The Tower of Belem, built between 1515 and 1520, is a fortress that guards the harbor and celebrates the discoveries in grand style, with its elaborate Manueline carved decorations similar to those at Jeronimos. It was built as a fortress to protect the entrance of Lisbon’s harbor and had originally been in the river as an island surrounded by water, but over time the river got narrower so the fortress is now on the shore. Another fortress used to be on the opposite side of the river to catch the enemy in a cross-fire. You can climb to upper levels for a panoramic view.
LISBON: Belém Tower (Portugal)
Torre de Belém is a fortified tower that was part of a defensive system to protect access to the Tagus estuary from pirates and enemy attacks.
Belém Tower was constructed on the rocky outcropping/island along the northern margin of the Tagus River. It is located in the civil parish of Santa Maria de Belém in the municipality of Lisbon/Lisboa, Portugal.
The tower was built in the early 16th century and is a prominent example of the Portuguese Manueline style, but it also incorporates hints of other architectural styles. The structure was built from lioz limestone and is composed of a bastion and a 30-metre (98.4 ft), four-storey tower.
It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (along with the nearby Jerónimos Monastery) because of the significant role it played in the Portuguese maritime discoveries of the era of the Age of Discoveries. The tower was commissioned by King John II to be part of a defence system at the mouth of the Tagus river and a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon.
It has incorrectly been stated that the tower was built in the middle of the Tagus and now sits near the shore because the river was redirected after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. In fact, the tower was built on a small island in the Tagus River near the Lisbon shore.
The tower is about 12 metres (39 ft) wide and 30 metres (98 ft) tall.

Belém Tower Lisbon
Belém Tower (Portuguese: Torre de Belém, pronounced: [ˈtoʁ(ɨ) dɨ bɨˈlɐ̃ȷ̃]) or the Tower of St Vincent[1] is a fortified tower located in the civil parish of Santa Maria de Belém in the municipality of Lisbon, Portugal. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (along with the nearby Jerónimos Monastery)[2] because of the significant role it played in the Portuguese maritime discoveries of the era of the Age of Discoveries.[3] The tower was commissioned by King John II to be part of a defence system at the mouth of the Tagus river and a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon.[3]
The tower was built in the early 16th century and is a prominent example of the Portuguese Manueline style,[4] but it also incorporates hints of other architectural styles.[5] The structure was built from lioz limestone and is composed of a bastion and a 30-metre (98.4 ft),[1] four-storey tower. It has incorrectly been stated that the tower was built in the middle of the Tagus and now sits near the shore because the river was redirected after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. In fact, the tower was built on a small island in the Tagus River near the Lisbon shore.[5][6]
In the late 15th century, King John II had designed a defence system for the mouth of the Tagus that depended on the fortresses of Cascais and São Sebastião (or Torre Velha) in Caparica on the south side of the river.[5][7] These fortresses did not completely protect the river's mouth, and further protection was required.[7] In his Chronicle of John II (Chronica de D. Joao II), which appeared in 1545,[8] the author Garcia de Resende affirmed the king's opinion that the defences of Lisbon were inadequate, and that he had insisted on building fortifications along the entrance to the River Tagus to supplement the existing defences.[9] To this end, he ordered the making of a strong fort, but died before any plans were drawn. King Manuel I of Portugal revisited the proposal twenty years later and ordered the construction of a military fortification on the northern margin of the Tagus at Belém.[7] In 1513, Lourenço Fernandes wrote a letter to his friends referring to the king's intention of constructing a tower near Restelo Velho, having determined it to be essential.
The project was started on a basaltic rock outcrop a short distance from the riverbank, using some of the stone being collected to build the Monastery of Santa Maria de Belém.
LISBON: Belém district (4/5) Portugal
Many of Portugal's distinctive buildings and landmarks are located in Belém, including the Jerónimos Monastery and the Tower of Belém. At the heart of Belém is the Praça do Império, an avenue of open-spaces and gardens, with a central fountain. Belém is the southwesternmost civil parish of Lisbon/Lisboa (Portugal).
Belém is famous as the place from which many of the great Portuguese explorers set off on their voyages of discovery. In particular, it is the place from which Vasco da Gama departed for India in 1497 and Pedro Álvares Cabral departed for Brazil in 1499. It is also a former royal residence and features the 17th–18th century Belém Palace, a former royal residence now occupied by the President of Portugal.
Belém's main street and historical avenue is Rua de Belém, a strip of 160-year buildings that have survived several years of change and modernization.
The main street includes the famous pastry shop Fábrica de Pasteis de Belém known for a specific Portuguese confectionery: pastel de Belém, an egg tart made with flaky pastry. The Pastéis de nata were created in 1837 by Catholic monks at the Jerónimos Monastery in Belém, in Lisbon.

Belem:
The Belém Tower, one of the most famous and visited landmarks in Lisbon and throughout Portugal.
Belém is famous as the place from which many of the great Portuguese explorers set off on their voyages of discovery. In particular, it is the place from which Vasco da Gama departed for India in 1497 and Pedro Álvares Cabral departed for Brazil in 1499. It is also a former royal residence and features the 17th – 18th-century Belém Palace, a former royal residence now occupied by the President of Portugal, and the Ajuda Palace, begun in 1802 but never completed.
Perhaps Belém's most famous feature is its tower, Torre de Belém, whose image is much used by Lisbon's tourist board. The tower was built as a fortified lighthouse late in the reign of Dom Manuel l (1515–1520) to guard the entrance to the port. It stood on a little island in right side of the Tagus, surrounded by water. Belém's other major historical building is the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (Jerónimos Monastery), which the Torre de Belém was built partly to defend. Belém's most notable modern feature is the Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries) built for the Portuguese World Fair in 1940. In the heart of Belém is the Praça do Império: gardens centred upon a large fountain, laid out during World War II. To the west of the gardens lies the Centro Cultural de Belém. Belém is one of the most visited Lisbon districts. Here is located the Estádio do Restelo, house of Belenenses.
LISBON - A DAY IN BELÈM: The Belém Tower & Pastéis de Belém | Lisbon Vlog | Kathryn Tamblyn
Here's Part 2 of our Lisbon trip: A Day in Belém! Tom and I start by sampling the world famous Pastéis de Belém and they lived up to the hype as the very best pastéis or pastel de natas. We tour the Jardim de Belém and then walk to the beautiful Belém Tower and the stunning, Ponte 25 de Abril. While wandering around the lovely streets of Belém, we stop at Santini's Gelato for the best gelato in Lisbon. I highly recommend trying their coconut flavor. It was the perfect day in Belém, even though we have a few hiccups with visiting some of the locations.
