South Coast Winery Resort & Spa Golden State Winery of the Year 2016
This 4x title holder for the BEST CALIFORNIA STATE WINERY OF THE YEAR is THE PLACE to stop during your visit. The warm and friendly tasting room serves up award-winning wines, while the estate vineyards of this 39-acre resort house an award winning restaurant, luxurious spa and private villas, providing you with the ultimate wine country experience. What’s South Coast Winery’s secret? Its winemaking philosophy is simple: In order for outstanding grapes to become unforgettable wine, it necessitates an essential dedication of marrying the best of Mother Nature with the best of man. As South Coast Winery’s winegrower and proprietor, Jim Carter’s approach to growing the best grapes in Southern California honors this union, alongside his hiring award-winning winemaking team Jon McPherson & Javier Flores. Therein lies the success that has earned South Coast Winery the best of the best distinction when it broke the record for being the first winery ever, in the oldest, most prestigious wine competition, to take home the title of the California State Golden Bear Winery of the Year Award four times: 2008/09, 2009/10, 2013/14 and 2016/17. There is a place on earth where each of the grapes is grown to produce today's wine. Our place on earth –the valley of Wild Horse Peak -- is the best.” states Carter. His vineyards, located on the eastern side of Mount Palomar, are set in the native terrain of Southern California which offers invigoratingly beautiful scenery. The nearby Temecula Valley offers daytime heat and nighttime cold, an ideal agricultural setting for wine growing but after tasting his first harvest, Carter realized his mountain vineyard had something extra—more sunshine. It is this extra gift from Mother Nature that produces South Coast’s exceptional grapes. Not planted in the more common California sprawl, Carter’s vineyards are planted in 3'6 heights, allowing the extra sunshine to meet and make great each cluster of grapes.
Golden State Winery of The Year 2016 - South Coast Winery
Records were broken this year at the California State Fair Commercial Wine Competition as South Coast Winery was the first and only winery in the competition’s history to be presented with a four-time championship, naming it the 2016 California Golden State Winery of the Year. South Coast Winery brought home the first California State Winery of the Year award to its Southern California Temecula Valley home in 2008 and then followed it up with a back-to-back win in 2009. It earned the top title in the California State competition again in 2013 and now celebrates its fourth win for 2016.
South Coast Winery Winery of The Year 2016
Dating back to 1854, the California State Wine Competition premieres only wines made with fruit grown in California; and there were 2,854 wines judged from 750 of the state’s top wineries during this year’s competition.

The Wine Down - Tasting Temecula with David Vergari and Guest-Host, Wes Hagen
EPISODE SYNOPSIS:
With Sonja out of town, the host seat gets filled by the brilliant winemaker and friend of the show, Wes Hagen of Clos Pepe, who has invited David Vergari of Vergari Wines and Thornton Wine to discuss the bubbling scene in Temecula.
The talk goes into the reasons for the region's surprising excellence--from good soil to passionate growers, and we taste several varietals of David's work. Along the way, we wonder where Temecula is going with their wine, and learn about the roots of the current crop. It's a key show about a region that is coming up in the wine world. Cheers!
GUEST BIO:
David Vergari founded Vergari Wines in 2003, producing Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon from vineyards that are exclusively suited to those varietals. David studied Enology and Viticulture at UC Davis, interned at Sonoma-Cutrer and The Hess Collection in Napa Valley, and worked abroad at Coldstream Hills in Australia and Covisa in Spain. Landing back in California, David worked his way up to Research Enologist at Joseph Phelps Vineyard before moving to Rutz Cellars in the Russian River Valley, where he not only became the winemaker, but honed his skills and appreciation for Pinot Noir. Then, after four years as Head Winemaker at Maddalena Vineyards, David decided to launch his own label, Vergari Wines.
In his spare time, David acts as a consulting winemaker and teaches extension wine courses at UC Irvine. David ascribes his lifelong interest in wine at least in part to his Italian ancestry. His first memory of wine goes back to when he was five years old, in his great-uncle's cellar in San Francisco tasting Dago Red - cut with water, of course! For a while in his twenties he worked as a financial analyst, but winemaking was in his blood, and inevitably he decided to change careers and follow his passion.
