Serbia... wow! Didn't expect we'd be in Belgrade making travel vlogs if you asked us a few years ago, but here we are, and we LOVE Belgrade! This place is an amazing, and very underrated, travel destination - let us show you why.
In this vlog we sort of cover both our initial impressions of Belgrade, how we feel about Serbia, our surprises and then at the end wrap it up after we've stayed for 2 weeks in Serbia. Theres lots of things to do in Belgrade - we visit the Fortress, explore a cute park, find an amazing restaurant scene, scope out the nightlife spots, eat some local(ish) food, check out the shopping scene and try some local craft beer.
First impressions last, or so they say, and it's true for Belgrade. How we felt on the first day is exactly how things stayed a few weeks later - it's amazing! We also took a road trip to Novi Sad for the day with friends, another popular spot in Serbia, but we weren't filming that day sorry.
Moral of the story - consider places like Serbia, cities like Belgrade, locations that the masses don't always chat about and share online. These are the cities and experiences we love, places like Belgrade are why we travel - hidden gems that we get to experience, travel, vlog and share with you... thanks us later.

BELGRADE
Belgrade lies 116.75 metres (383.0 ft) above sea level and is located at the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers. The historical core of Belgrade, Kalemegdan, lies on the right banks of both rivers. Since the 19th century, the city has been expanding to the south and east; after World War II, Novi Beograd (New Belgrade) was built on the left bank of the Sava river, connecting Belgrade with Zemun. Smaller, chiefly residential communities across the Danube, like Krnjača and Borča, also merged with the city. The city has an urban area of 360 square kilometres (140 sq mi), while together with its metropolitan area it covers 3,223 km2 (1,244 sq mi). Throughout history, Belgrade has been a crossroads between the West and the Orient.
On the right bank of the Sava, central Belgrade has a hilly terrain, while the highest point of Belgrade proper is Torlak hill at 303 m (994 ft). The mountains of Avala (511 m (1,677 ft)) and Kosmaj (628 m (2,060 ft)) lie south of the city. Across the Sava and Danube, the land is mostly flat, consisting of alluvial plains and loessial plateaus.
Belgrade is the capital and largest city of Serbia. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe. The city is located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, where the Pannonian Plain meets the Balkans. Its Serbian name Beograd translates to White city. The city proper has a population of over 1.1 million, whereas its metropolitan area reaches 1.64 million people, making it one of the largest cities in East Central Europe.
One of the largest prehistoric cultures of Europe, the Vinča culture, evolved around the area Belgrade in the 6th millennium BC. In antiquity, Thraco-Dacians inhabited the region, and after 279 BC Celts conquered the city, naming it Singidūn. It was conquered by the Romans during the reign of Augustus, and awarded city rights in the mid 2nd century. It was settled by the Slavs in the 520s, and changed hands several times between Franks, Byzantines and Hungarians before it became the capital of Serbian King Stephen Dragutin (1282--1316). In 1521 Belgrade was conquered by the Ottoman Empire and became the seat of the Sanjak of Smederevo. It frequently passed from Ottoman to Habsburg rule, which saw the destruction of most of the city during the Austro-Ottoman wars. Belgrade was again named the capital of Serbia in 1841. The north of Belgrade remained a Habsburg outpost until 1918, when it was merged into the capital city. As a strategic location, the city was battled over in 115 wars and razed to the ground 44 times. Belgrade was the capital of Yugoslavia (in various forms of governments) from its creation in 1918, to its final dissolution in 2006.
Belgrade has a special administrative status within Serbia and it is one of five statistical regions of Serbia. Its metropolitan territory is divided into 17 municipalities, each with its own local council. It covers 3.6% of Serbia's territory, and 22.5% of the country's population lives in the city. The city has been awarded many titles, including the nomination for European Capital of Culture 2020.

Belgrade:
Belgrade is the capital city of Serbia and one of Europe's oldest cities. It is a modern city and a political, administrative and cultural center of the country. The archaeological sites are found in great numbers in this part of the city in very distant history. There are many inviting places in Belgrade such as the Stambol gate, Belgrade fortress Old palace and many others. To get a better understanding of the history of the country, the historical museums in Belgrade will give you a pretty good picture of its past.
Novi Sad:
Novi Sad is an elegant city with graceful parks, bars and outdoor cafes. The city is rather young and hosts one of Serbia’s largest music festivals. Novi Sad is the capital of the province of Vojvodina, an autonomous region with 6 official languages and 26 ethnic groups. As compared to most of the cities in the Balkans, it is more ornate and colourful with intriguing architecture. Novi Sad is also set to be the European Capital of Culture in 2021, and the only city in Europe that will be holding such a prestigious title.
Subotica:
Subotica is a small multicultural city with only one hundred thousand inhabitants. The languages are diverse in this city as much as its religion. A traveller is always enchanted by its marvellous architecture which is built in so many different art style and age. Most of the buildings are adorned with beautiful ceramic tiles, wood carvings, floral motifs and stained glass window. Subotica also has great natural wealth with Lake Palic being the most visited attractions in the city.
Kopaonik National park
Kopaonik is one of the biggest mountain range in the country, and in 1981, it was proclaimed a National Park. The beauty of the mountain comes from the reliefs of evergreen forests, mountain peaks and oceanic Turquoise Mountain where you can see the distant Stara Planina and Sara Mountain and its breathless sight. A large number of rare plant species makes the national park an important biodiversity area in Serbia.
Tara National Park
The Tara National Park was entitled a National Park in 1981 located in western Serbia. The park is known for its thick forests, beautiful peaks and deep caves. There are boat trips and river rafting organised by the park to the Drina River Gorge. It has varieties of plants and animal species. Along the course of mountain streams and rivers, the waterfall is also part of the impressive beauty. The park has facilities with great accommodation along with children’s camp area.

Belgrade nightlife aka a sample of the nightlife Belgrade Serbia. This was a week night and hip hop night; imagine a weekend with electronic? Anyways we were at Freestyler and had a great time enjoying Belgrade Serbia nightlife.
Living it up at night in Belgrade
There are a number of great nightclubs to hit in Belgrade's downtown core (in particular, we recommend Community by Kasina, which is full of attractive locals in their best dress … don't show up in jeans and sandals; you WILL be denied entry), but during the summer, the place to be on a warm summer's night is on a splavovi. These are river barges that have been converted into floating bars and dance clubs, allowing its patrons to party the night away under a starlit sky. There are several excellent candidates, but Club River stands out for its attractive ambiance, as its coloured floodlights, modern décor, and its egregious regulars make having a great time here a virtual guarantee!

Knez Mihailova Street
The main promenade and shopping centre. A pedestrian zone, it stretches between Terazije and Kalemegdan Park. It is named after Prince Mihailo Obrenović, the most enlightened ruler of modern Serbia and the younger son of Prince Miloš. He came to throne after his father's death in 1860 and was assassinated during a stroll through Košutnjak Park in 1868. Sets of representative buildings and mansions erected in the late 19th century adorn the street
Republic Square
The main city square lined with the National Theatre building (completed in 1869), National Museum, and monument to Prince Mihailo erected in 1882, popular with Belgraders as a meeting point. Once it was the location of the infamous Stambol Gate, the main gates to the Belgrade Fortress. Today this square hosts concerts, protests and various other events. The National Museum is closed to visitors due to inadequate conditions for display and a reconstruction will take several years, so you will be unable to see a large collection of international painters (particularly impressionists), or its most valued treasure - Miroslavljevo jevanđelje (Miroslav Gospel), the oldest preserved manuscript in Serbian Cyrillic Script (from 1190) with very rich decorations.

This building certainly has seen a fair bit of action. Started off in 1906, building activities were interrupted by the First World War; it was completed in 1932, while the Playing Black Horses statues were added in 1939. In 1945, the Yugoslav Republic was announced here, and more recently the building had its 15 minutes of fame on October 5, 2000, when part a crowd of 900,000 gathered in Belgrade stormed the building, throwing out fraudulent ballot papers, setting fire to a room or two and scooting off with bits and pieces of the building and its interior, while RTS (Serbian state TV) happily chose to ignore all the fuss. BBC's John Simpson reported: 'when demonstrators brought out hatstands, chairs and policemen's helmets from the parliament building, it was more in the spirit of souvenir hunting than looting'. When the new authorities later kindly asked the public to bring back the furniture, nobody was surprised that many did so.
Albania building

Located on Terazije - the centre of the city and the Balkan Peninsula. Terazije is a landmark from which all distances in Serbia are measured. Completed in 1939, Albania was the tallest building in Belgrade and the Balkans for a long time. It was named after a tavern named Albania, which occupied the same site. Workers digging its foundations turned up a mammoth's skeleton. It is one of the symbols of Belgrade, and one of very few buildings which were spared the destructions of WWII.
Cathedral Church

The main church of the city, dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel. The present church (from 1845) was built on the site of a former Cathedral Church, dating from the 16th century, which had been repeatedly demolished and desecrated by the Ottoman Turks. The church treasures the holy remains of Serbian saint Emperor Uroš (the last of Nemanjić Royal house), and it is the burial site of some of the most important figures in Serbian history: Vuk Karadžić, Dositej Obradović, and Serbian rulers of the Obrenović dynasty - Miloš, Mihailo and Milan. The interior is richly decorated with a gold-plated carved iconostasis. Across from the church is the seat of the Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church, a building completed in 1935.
Kalemegdan Park
Kalemegdan Park was created as late as the 19th century, on a plateau in front of the fortress, which had been cleared for centuries to allow for unobstructed view of the advancing enemy. The park is popular because of its many shady benches, random sculptures, art pavilion, Zoo, amusement park, souvenir vendors. It is the favourite haunt of chess players, squirrels and couples in love.

Q Where are you from?
A I am born in former Yugoslavia. Mom is Serbian, Dad is Bosnian. During the '90's war we came to the Netherlands and I got Dutch nationality. I've lived in Amsterdam for 8 years but lost my heart to India. Since 2018 I'm based in Bangalore. See this video for my refugee story:
Q How can you afford to travel so much?
A I saved for 3 years while working full time and now travel vlogging is my job. I work together with tourism agencies but also do some freelance work on the side. You can watch this video: and this one: to learn more about my story.
Q What camera do you film with and what editing software do you use?
A Canon G7X Mark II and Final Cut Pro X
Q (Why) Are you vegetarian?
A I'm vegetarian but not strict. I don't eat any meat, fish, cooked/boiled or fried eggs. I gradually became a vegetarian over the course of 15 years because I disliked the taste of meat more and more. After doing a yoga teacher training in 2015 I also quit fish and the eggs. No matter my food preferences I have no issues with other people not being vegetarian. I don't judge others and kind of expect the same favor from others concerning my own food preferences. It makes for a more friendly world :-)
Q Why do you usually travel alone?
A Because my friends have jobs with limited holidays, kids and partners. Also I really like exploring on my own.
