Belhaven Memorial Museum, Belhaven North Carolina 27810
Mary Eva Blount Way (1869-1962) or Miss Eva was an avid collector of unique things including a large assortment of buttons. As word of her fondness for collecting things spread, friends and neighbors began to bring treasures from their own lives and travels. The result is a fascinating array of priceless artifacts from Beaufort County, North Carolina and from afar. They say the collection is A cross between Ripley's believe it or not and the Smithsonian. Miss Eva began to showcase her collection in her home in 1940 in an effort to aid the American Red Cross, By then the collection had grown to more than 10,000 items. Following her death in 1962 concerned citizens of Belhaven purchased the collection. On April 1, 1965, the Belhaven Memorial Museum was officially opened on the second floor in the old Historic Belhaven Town Hall. Artifacts in the museum range in time from the early 1800's to the 1960's Most items portray life in and around Beaufort County NC, but many have come from far afield. Antique toys and dolls, artifacts from the war between the states, world wars one and two, fashions, and technological antiquities will enlighten and amuse visitors of all ages. Belhaven is located 30 miles East of Washington NC on Highway 264 East at 211 Main Street in downtown Belhaven. Open everyday 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, Closed Wednesday. For more information call 252-943-6817. Some information from the Belhaven Memorial Museum brochure.
