Our Town Temple
KWTX News 10 is the dominant local television news organization within a 14 county area. In early June, our news reporters and anchors will feature stories, reports and interviews that will speak to Temple's history and great future. Our goal is to expose Temple's hidden jewels to the rest of our viewing area. There are over 500,000 people living and working in central Texas and many may not know the story of the city of Temple, much less the people of Temple. KWTX News 10 hopes to change that with Our Town Temple.

Texas Historical Marker Dedication Boys Ranch of Copperas Cove
The Boys Ranch story starts in 1934. The United States had been in the grip of the Great Depression since 1929. Nearly a quarter of Americans were unemployed and wages were dropping. Even for those employed, the workforce saw take-home pay shrink, reflecting deceased work hours and lower wages. In Killeen, First National Bank was the sole remaining bank, absorbing six other banks in Copperas Cove, Kempner and Killeen, according to Robert Allen Ozment in his master’s thesis, “Temple, Texas, and the Great Depression, 1929-1933.” Unemployed and homeless, thousands of Texans hitchhiked across the state is search of work, while being frequently forced to seek shelter in abandoned buildings, tents or shanties made of cardboard boxes and tar paper. Scholars estimate that nearly 50 percent of children did not have adequate food, shelter or medical care.
Families had no safety net such as those that are available today. Although there were orphanages and institutions to care for underprivileged children, they were woefully inadequate for the number of children in need. Also, there was no home for troubled youth except reform schools.
This was the backdrop when Roy Ernest Dawson and Viola Mae Roubison Dawson first embarked on their dream of establishing a home for orphaned and disenfranchised children. Viola was born May 2, 1900, in Temple, Texas and died September 28, 1954, in Goldthwaite, Texas . She was a deeply religious person who was ordained as an elder in the church of the Nazarene on October 27, 1929. It is likely that her devotion to children was influenced by her own meager circumstances while growing up in Texas and Oklahoma.
Viola and Roy married on July 3, 1917 in Cameron, Texas. Roy was born January 11, 1897, and died August 20, 1984, in Lampasas, Texas. He was a quiet man of strong character. He was a husband completely devoted to Viola and her effort to help children to become a reality. Their guiding principle is made clear in the often-repeated motto for their life’s most enduring accomplishment, “Teach a man, you write on water; teach a child, you carve on marble.”
II. OVERVIEW
Helping the helpless was a way of life for Viola Dawson. The couple had undertaken charity work early in their marriage while living in Oklahoma. By the time they returned to Texas in 1930 both of them knew that they wanted to establish a home in the country “where boys could chase squirrels and go swimming nude in the creek or play marbles.”
Although discouraged by friends and advisors, the Dawsons were not deterred from pursuit of their dreams. The Texas Secretary of State issued charter 65959 to the Society for Friendless Children on August 17, 1934. The corporation was a Christian but non-denominational non-profit corporation. This was followed by the issuance of license #297 by the State Board of Control, Division of Child Welfare on August 20, 1937. The Dawsons later changed the name from Society for Friendless Children to Boys Ranch of Copperas Cove as the original name was not descriptive of their plans for the children in their care. Although the entire ranch was located in Bell County, the name Boys Ranch of Copperas Cove was chosen since the boys attended school in nearby Copperas Cove.
The plans for a ranch for children began to become a reality when Roy and Viola purchased the Dawson homestead of 502 acres for $5,030 from Roy’s mother and siblings. The land, located in West Bell County, was surrounded by a rolling and hilly landscape. The land had large stands of live oak trees with graceful reclining branches and wide canopies.

Better Qualified works closely with collections attorneys to comb through all of your 3rd party collections in search of violations. When an account is sold to a 3rd party, often times the collection company will violate set regulations. This leaves the consumer paying more than they have to or paying for something that isn’t theirs. Our collection attorneys have not only gotten 3rd party and medical collections removed from our clients reports, but have also succeeded in obtaining cash settlements for some clients as well. Video Credits can be found here Most of the Finance and Insurance subsectors contain one or more industry groups of (1) intermediaries with similar patterns of raising and using funds and (2) establishments engaged in activities that facilitate, or are otherwise related to, that type of financial or insurance intermediation. Industries within this sector are defined in terms of activities for which a production process can be specified, and many of these activities are not exclusive to a particular type of financial institution. To deal with the varied activities taking place within existing financial institutions, the approach is to split these institutions into components performing specialized services. This requires defining the units engaged in providing those services and developing procedures that allow for their delineation. These units are the equivalents for finance and insurance of the establishments defined for other industries.
