Aerial Bell Island
Shot between spring and late summer at Bell Island, in Conception Bay, Newfoundland. To me it's a photographic rabbit hole, taking me deeper with each visit. This video takes us from the abandoned airstrip to the lighthouse and sea stack at the northern end, the amazing 100 metre cliffs and a small freshwater canyon, the crumbling sea stack at Grebe's Nest, to the southwestern tip called the Bell and nearby beach with crystal clear water and boaters, ending at the Pillars at the entrance of abandoned mine tunnels just southwest of the town of Wabana. Video is a bit long but what can you do when a place is so awesome...

Bell Island is in Conception Bay, Newfoundland. It was a thriving mining community in the 1940 and 50's. Iron ore was in great demand during the second world war. The demand lessened post war and eventually led to the shutting down of the mines. The island remains inhabited with Wabanna being the largest community and Lance Cove being much smaller. A beautiful island to visit with a spectacular coastline and sea stacks.

The hold and engine room of the SS Rose Castle, Bell Island, October 2011
Not for the faint hearted... the deepest wreck, you can look at the Marconi room then drop down to the hold below and land at 42m - head aft and there is a crack in the bulkhead that gives access to the engine compartment. However, when diving solo on this world-famous wreck (as I was, in fact I was the only diver there all week) then penetration is not necessarily a good idea. It is also very cold and I was not lingering long enough to let my computers adjust and tell me just how cold!

Ride on the MV Legionnaire, Bell Island's new ferry! (Also a bit of urbex on B.I.)
On August 3rd, my friend Brent and I visited Bell Island for the day and we took the brand new ferry, the MV Legionnaire. She was built and launched in 2015 by Damen Shipyards and is the sister ship to the MV Veteran, which serves the Fogo/Change Islands run. The Legionnaire entered service on the Portugal Cove/Bell Island run just a couple days before this video was taken.
Here are some specs on this vessel:
We also checked out some sites on Bell Island. We visited the graveyard where my nan and pop Murphy are buried, then we visited the big house my mom and the Kelloway family grew up in, and then we visited the big Lighthouse on the Eastern side of the Island. We then stopped into Dicks's Fish and Chips for a bite to eat, and then boarded the Legionnaire again to go back home.
