The Bell Tower in Lake Reschen, Italy
14th-century church steeple submerged in Lake Reschen, Italy. When the water freezes, it can be reached on foot. In July 1939, the Montecatini Company introduced a new plan for a 22-meter (72 ft) deep lake, which would unify two natural lakes (Reschensee and Mittersee) and submerge several villages, including Graun and part of Reschen. The population from Graun and Reschen, tried to prevent the building over a political intervention. A discussion with the Holy Father in Rome was without result. The creation of the dam started in April 1940, but due to the war and local resistance, did not finish until July 1950. In total 163 homes and 523 hectares (1,290 acres) of cultivated land were submerged.
The church tower of Graun in the frozen Reschensee
The church tower of Graun is the only visible reminder that there once was a village where now the Reschensee is a beautiful spectacle in blue. In winter, when the lake freezes, touching the church tower is a must for visitors to the lake.

The Vinschgau Valley stretches from the Reschen Pass to Kastelbell/Tschars. The whole valley covers an area of 1.441 square kilometres and it bounders with Switzerland and Austria.

This footage shows the Fortress of Nauders in Austria near the Italian border and the artificial lake Reschen or Lago di Resia 2 km across the border with Austria in Italy. The lake has a depth of 22 metres and made the small village of Graun disappear completely, except for the medieval church tower that rises above the water.

Lake Reschen, Italy
Reschensee ( Italian: Lago di Resia ) or Lake Reschen is an artificial lake in the western portion of South Tyrol, Italy, created in July 1939, when the Montecatini Company introduced a new plan for a 22m (72ft) deep lake, which would unify two natural lakes (Reschensee and Mittersee) and submerge several villages, including Graun and part of Reschen.
The lake is famous for the steeple of a submerged 14th-century church; when the water freezes, this can be reached on foot.

Flying around The Stelvio Pass - The Stilfser Joch by drone | Stelvio Pass Series Ep. 003
Flying around the Stelvio Pass. Footage of the legendary Passo dello Stelvio, spotting a rare Gipeto, gliding over the Campanile di Curon (Kirchturm Von Altgraun), spotting the abandoned Castle / Fortress of Montechiaro (Burgruine Lichtenberg), the cable car over the Pirovano summit.
Also featured the Lago di Resia (Resia Lake / Reschensee / Lake Reschen). The lake is famous for the steeple of a submerged 14th-century church; when the water freezes, this can be reached on foot. A legend says that during winter one can still hear church bells ring. In reality the bells were removed from the tower on July 18, 1950, a week before the demolition of the church nave and the creation of the lake. The Stelvio Pass (Passo dello Stelvio / Stilfser Joch) is a mountain pass in northern Italy, at an elevation of 2,757 m (9,045 ft) above sea level. It is the highest paved mountain pass in the Eastern Alps, and the second highest in the Alps.
The Vinschgau Valley (Val Venosta) runs in a west-east orientation, from the Merano basin at Partschins up the Adige river to Reschen Pass in the northwest. The Ötztal Alps in the north, part of the Alpine crest, separate it from the upper Inn Valley. The Adige valley is further confined by the Sesvenna Alps in the west and the Ortler Alps in the south. It comprises several side valleys, such as the Suldental, the Matscher Tal, or the Schnalstal.
Due to the insular location within the Central Eastern Alps, a rather warm climate and a lack of rain (400mm per year), fields, meadows and apple orchards are irrigated. Viticulture is also common.
TOP Gear defines Italy's Stelvio Pass:: One of the World's greatest roads. The Stelvio Pass (Italian: Passo dello Stelvio) is a mountain pass in northern Italy, at an elevation of 2,757 m (9,045 ft) above sea level. It is the highest paved mountain pass in the Eastern Alps, and the second highest in the Alps.
The original road was built in 1820–25 by the Austrian Empire to connect the former Austrian province of Lombardy with the rest of Austria, covering a climb of 1,871 m (6,138 ft) The engineer and project manager was Carlo Donegani (1775–1845). Since then, the route has changed very little. Its seventy-five hairpin turns, 48 of them on the northern side numbered with stones, are a challenge to motorists. Stirling Moss went off the road here during a vintage car event in the 1990s, with an onboard video of his incident being shown on satellite TV.
Before the end of World War I, it formed the border between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Italian Kingdom. The Swiss had an outpost and a hotel (which was destroyed) on the Dreisprachenspitze (literally, Three-Language-Peak). During World War I, fierce battles were fought in the ice and snow of the area, with gun fire even crossing the Swiss area at times. The three nations made an agreement not to fire over Swiss territory, which jutted out in between Austria (to the north) and Italy (to the south). Instead they could fire down the pass, as Swiss territory was up and around the peak. After 1919, with the expansion of Italy, the pass lost its strategic importance.
