We had a really nice weekend there due to the history of the site, the restfulness and quiet, and the beauty. It was owned by the family of James Madison's mother and Madison was born there. One of the more active communities is the Frederick Douglass LLC, which regularly takes educational trips. One student — with a special connection to the LLC — describes how the trip changed her.
Ep. 271 - Belle Grove Plantation
Belle Grove Plantation is an estate and plantation house dating back into the 18th century that has witnessed over 300 years of history that includes colonization, the Revolutionary and Civil Wars and is famously known as the birthplace of President James Madison. The pursuit of John Wilkes Booth also touched the grounds of this beautiful property. This is one of the best preserved 18th century homes in America and has been restored to its former beauty and runs today as a bed and breakfast. One claim to fame that is not as well known is just how haunted this property allegedly seems to be and that reputation led it to being featured on Ghost Hunters. There are reputedly dozens of ghosts lurking about the manor. Join me as I explore the history and hauntings of Belle Grove Plantation! The Moment in Oddity was suggested by Rachel Gates and features Chief Big Thunder's death and beyond and This Month in History features the Watts Riots.

Kentmore Plantation
Kenmore, perhaps also known as Kenmore Plantation, was the home of Fielding Lewis in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Fielding was married to Betty Washington Lewis, the sister of George Washington. The house was built in the 1770s on a 1,300-acre (530 ha) plantation. The property was purchased by the Gordon family in 1819. They named it Kenmore for the home of their ancestors in Scotland.
The house is notable for the remarkable decorative plaster work on the ceilings of many rooms on the first floor.
It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1970.
Kenmore is owned and operated as a museum by The George Washington Foundation (formerly George Washington's Fredericksburg Foundation), and is open daily for guided tours. The Foundation also owns nearby Ferry Farm.
1983 HABS photographLocated in Fredericksburg, Virginia, Kenmore is a plantation house and the only surviving structure from the Kenmore plantation. The house was completed in 1776 for Betty Washington Lewis, the sister of George Washington, and for her husband Fielding Lewis. The plantation originally grew tobacco, wheat, and corn. In later years, the plantation served an active role in the civil war, serving as a makeshift military hospital after the Battle of the Wilderness in 1864, and served as part of the federal troops' route to Richmond
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969 and was further designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970.

Belle Grove - October 19, 1864
New Year's Eve Murder at Belle Grove Plantation
Belle Grove Plantation hosted our first Murder Mystery Night on New Years Eve 2014.
Murder at Devonshire Manor
The Devonshire Manor is an 18th century mansion on the outskirts of the town of Pinehorn. It was once owned by the wealthy Devonshire family and is a legendary estate to the citizens of Pinehorn. In their day, the Devonshires were beloved, treated as
royalty, as they owned more than half of the businesses in town.
The Devonshire Manor has exquisite architectural features, albeit weathered throughout the years. Weeds and high grass have long since replaced the flowering shrubs and ornamental trees that adorned the property in its day. The remaining Devonshire lineage passed away in the early 1900’s, leaving their estate in the hands of the town of Pinehorn. The townspeople have neglected to keep up with the place, mostly due to the legend that the Devonshires still roam the corridors at night.
The mayor of Pinehorn has made it her quest to remodel and reinstate the Devonshire Manor as a historical bed and breakfast. She believes that the old estate can generate tourism and an income for the town of Pinehorn. Most of the townspeople stand behind her, although a few people are adamantly against her pursuit – stating that the place is haunted and should be left alone.
The mayor cleaned up the dusty cobwebs and is hosting a fundraiser bash for the townspeople of Pinehorn. She hopes to raise enough funds for her remodeling endeavors.
See our list of suspects and all the fun we had figuring out Who was the murderer!
