Scottish Places: St John's Tower, Ayr, Scotland - 1st Scottish Parliament
Comments welcome! On April 26, 1315, the first Parliament of Scotland was held in Ayr by Robert The Bruce at St.Johns Tower by the sea. Later, during cromwellian times, the town was used as a base and fortress for some of Oliver Cromwell's men. He built a huge wall around part of the town, most of which can still be seen today.

Ayr
Ayr is a town and former Royal Burgh sitting along the west coast of Ayrshire in Scotland. It forms a part of the South Ayrshire Local Authority area, serving as the area's administrative centre. Historically, Ayr was the county town of Ayrshire until 1975. Ayr is currently the most populated settlement in Ayrshire and the South of Scotland. It is the 13th most populous locality in Scotland.
The town was established in 1205 and soon developed as the central market and port along the west coast of Scotland, becoming a prominent trading port to Ireland. Oliver Cromwell also established a Citadel along the south of the river Ayr, the ramparts of which remain visible to this day. As the birthplace of famous Scottish poet Robert Burns, the suburb of Alloway, in the south of the town, houses his former home and the Robert Burns Experience. Across the Victorian era coal and iron remained the central export of the town, with fishing and shipping also forming a significant sect of the local economy. Ayr later developed as a holiday resort, aspects of which remain the case today with the continued presence of a Butlins holiday park to the south of the town. The Gaiety Theatre, Ayr ran various shows across the late 20th century, attracting performers from across the United Kingdom, and despite its decline throughout the 2000s, it remains in operation today.

The Burns an' a' that Festival! is proud to celebrate its thirteenth anniversary and Scotland's Year of Homecoming in Ayrshire in 2014.
Ayrshire is of course home to Robert Burns and boasts the brand new state of the art Robert Burns Birthplace Museum as well as many other attractions from world class golf courses to historic castles, a stunning coastline and so much more.
The Burns an' a' that Festival is at the core of an annual events and festivals programme that also includes Alloway 1759, a unique commemoration of the birthplace and life of Robert Burns, that takes place around his birthday in January each year.
The Burns an' a' that! Festival in 2014 is part of the Burns and the South West programme where three new Burns itineraries are available for visitors to explore Burns Country and discover more about the man behind the poetry.
It has also encouraged and developed a fringe programme of events from comedy to culture, food & drink to fun and games, visual and performance arts plus many more activities for adults and children alike. The festival also created the prestigious Robert Burns Humanitarian Award, presented annually to a group or individual who has helped to improve or enrich the lives of others.
Over the years the Burns an' a' that! Festival! has played host to a number of stars including Jools Holland, Katherine Jenkins, Julian Cope, Frankie Boyle and Status Quo, to name but a few.
From its original home of Ayr Town Hall the festival then travelled outdoors to Wellington Square Gardens and for years delighted audiences at open air concerts and in the visually stunning spiegeltent. Other grand venues also became centre stage of the festival including gala concerts at Culzean Castle and Turnberry and the memorable Rock at the Racecourse.
Burns an' a' that Festival! continues to be supported by South Ayrshire Council and Event Scotland as a major festival date in Scotland's event calendar.
In 2014 The Burns Festival is proud to work in association with Zisys Events in the production of the live music stage.
The last thirteen years have seen many changes but the heart of the Festival will always be about our very own Robert Burns. An inspiration to millions worldwide we are proud to celebrate the man, his music, his legacy...
