Where it all Began - Kingston, Ontario
Founded in 1673, and named Canada's first capitol in 1841 (yup that's right, our nation's first capitol was in Kingston, not Ottawa!), Kingston still retains some of that old-world charm but mixes it with a bustle of activity which makes it one of the greatest cities in Canada.
Kingston is known for its historic properties, as reflected in the city's motto where history and innovation thrive. The municipality has nearly 700 properties listed in the heritage register, 20 National Historic Sites and in 2007, the Rideau Canal, along with the fortifications at Kingston, was designated a World Heritage Site, one of only 15 such sites in Canada. All these places are responsible for the historic and architectural face of the city but it's the cities two universities, Queen's University and the Royal Military College of Canada (Canada's only military university), that give the place it's energy, enthusiasm and vigor! Queens University currently has an enrollment of more than 13,000 undergraduate and 4,000 graduate students, which means there is no shortage of nightlife in the city! But despite all this partying, Kingston still has the most PhD's per capita of any city in Canada.
The city is also famous for its fresh-water sailing, and hosted the sailing events for the 1976 Summer Olympics. Since 1972, Kingston has hosted more than 40 World and Olympic sailing championships. And on another important sporting note Kingston lays claim to being the birthplace of ice hockey!
Kingston is in the heart of Canada located midway between Toronto and Montreal. Paired up with a trip to one of Canada's other great cities or just as a destination onto itself Kingston is a great city to explore and enjoy.
There is a reason Kingston is still the Heartbeat of Canada.
