Crowsnest Pass History Tour - Part I
We spent the weekend in the Crowsnest Pass exploring the history of the area. From going underground in a former coal mine to museums to mass graves to rock slides to bootlegging, we cover a bit of everything.
We check out the Bellevue Mine tour, downtown Coleman, the Crowsnest Museum, the Alberta Provincial Police Barracks where a deadly shootout took place almost 100 years ago, and pay a visit to the Leitch Collieries. That's one busy day!
This is Part I in a two part series.
As always, thanks for coming along for the ride!

The Frank Slide Disaster | Crowsnest Pass, Alberta, Canada
The Frank Slide disaster was a rock slide that buried part of the mining town of Frank, Alberta, Canada on April 29, 1903. Around 110 million tonnes of limestone rock slid down Turtle Mountain. It was one of the largest landslides in Canadian history and remains the deadliest, as between 70 and 90 of the town's residents were killed, most of whom remain buried in the rubble.
Multiple factors led to the slide: Turtle Mountain's formation left it in a constant state of instability. Coal mining operations may have weakened the mountain's internal structure, as did a wet winter and cold snap on the night of the disaster.

Mine Diasters In the Rocky Mountains a tour into the Crowsnest Pass
This video I shot Awhile ago and I've just been overloaded with videos at the moment to upload it sooner. I left Calgary early morning and headed down to the Crownsnest pass which offers lots of history into settlements into the area and the coal mining business. The most famous part of the area is Frank's slide in which part of turtle mountain collapsed and buried the town of frank below. 2 miners died at the actual mine but all the miners in the mine itself made it out by digging themselves out of the mountain itself.
Other areas of interest are frank slide, leitch collieries, hillcrest mine disaster, bellevue underground mine, various ghost towns and abandon mines, lumbreck falls, burmiss tree
If your ever in the area it's a great and interesting place to check out there is so much to spending 1 day is just never enough to see it all.

A Tale of Two Galts: The Story of Lethbridge
This video highlights the lives of Sir Alexander Galt and his eldest son, Elliott Galt. After years in politics and business and helping to found Canada as a Father of Confederation, rather than looking to retire, Sir Alexander Galt continued in the work that he thought was important in building a country. Believing that westward expansion was vital to stopping the Americans and knowing that a growing country needed coal, Galt worked with investors in England and eastern Canada to develop the North Western Coal and Navigation Company to mine coal in Lethbridge’s river valley. From this one company, a series of other companies would develop which would oversee coal mining, railways, irrigation projects and more that would contribute to the development of southwestern Alberta.
Elliott Galt became the man on the scene overseeing the work of the various companies, which included the mine but also housing for workers, a sawmill in the Porcupine Hills to provide the timber for construction and the mines, the construction of several boats for transporting coal and when that didn’t work building a railway to Medicine Hat which would be joined by other railways and then irrigation.
These two men had a dramatic effect on what is now southern Alberta. The video looks at the two men, their legacy and the world they helped to create.
