Bellingham is a village in Northumberland, to the north-west of Newcastle upon Tyne and is situated on the Hareshaw Burn at its confluence with the River North Tyne. Famous as a stopping point on the Pennine Way trail it is popular with walkers and cyclists. Nearby is the Hareshaw Linn, a waterfall and the site of early coke blast furnaces. The village's local newspaper is the Hexham Courant. There is also an 18-hole golf course which was established in 1893.
The Heritage Centre is the local museum. It has exhibitions on the Border Counties Railway, the Border reivers, mining, farming, the photography of W P Collier, and the Stannersburn Smithy. It has a database of local family names and one of old photographs. It also holds special exhibitions of historical or artistic interest, and readings and performances by poets, storytellers, musicians and dancers.
The Grade-I listed St Cuthbert's Church (13th-century, substantially reconstructed in the early 17th century) is described as 'almost unique in England' owing to its stone barrel vault, which runs the length of the Nave and extends into the South Transept. Three miracles connected with the mediaeval cult of St Cuthbert, are recorded in the twelfth century Libellus of Reginald of Durham.
Within the churchyard is The Long Pack, purportedly the grave of a burglar who attempted to infiltrate a local house by hiding in a beggar's pack, but was discovered after he suffered an ill-timed coughing fit, and was promptly run through with the sword of the house's proprietor. Adjacent to the church is St Cuthbert's Well, known locally as Cuddy's Well, an ancient holy well.
From 1735 the parish rectors at Bellingham were under the patronage of the Governors of Greenwich Hospital. The Governors stipulated that the rectors were to be graduates of Oxford or Cambridge and naval chaplains. Bellingham Rectory was one of six such rectories in the Simonburn area.
Bellingham Bridge is a Grade II listed building built in 1834. It crosses the North Tyne. Two miles north-east at Hole Farm is the sixteenth century Grade II* listed building, Hole Bastle, a well-preserved example of a bastle house. Shitlington Crags is a crag near Shitlington Hall, south of Bellingham. The crag is at an average altitude of 170 metres. The Pennine Way passes by the crag.

The Last Sheep Sale (at Bellingham Mart, Northumberland) on 1 October 2004
Bellingham Mart served a wide area of Northumberland and beyond. It was hugely popular with farmers and traders. Various factors contributed to the closure including the prohibitive cost of meeting new government regulations and updating facilities. This DVD captures the atmosphere at the last sheep sale in October 2004. This clip or trailer lasts six minutes - the whole video is 45minutes. Matthew Potter Wood (now sadly deceased) when judging sheep looked for ' four good legs, a good mouth, a good carcass and a good coat'. Title music composed by Harry Pearson and played by his daughter Rachel Pearson. Musicians: Harry Pearson & Friends. Narrator: Anne Leuchars. Note: this is just a 6-minute clip or trailer - the full DVD is approx 45 minutes long. For more information:

Section 16: Bellingham to Dally Castle
In this section we begin by visiting Hareshaw Linn, a spectacular waterfall walk that makes a great three mile short walk on its own.
Afterwards we return to Bellingham and explore a Northumbrian legend connected to a grave marker in the Church of St Cuthberts.
From Bellingham we follow the Pennine Way by the show ground before leaving the national trail in order to make our way to Hesleyside Hall the family seat of the once notorious Border reiver family, the Charltons.
As this series is very much about me and Neil exploring Northumberland and hammering out the route for a new trail, we are going to sometimes make mistakes by taking the wrong route. This was our first error of route. It is advisable that you continue along the country lane from Hesleyside Hall to Dally Castle.
However, we decided to head up hill across Shitlington Common in order to reach Watch Crags. The idea was that with such a name, Watch Crags would provide spectacular views of the North Tyne valley. The views were good but the effort required reaching the crags through thigh high heather and tall grass was not worth it.
Here Neil and I parted ways because after putting in the effort to reach the crags, I wanted to see the view from the top, while Neil just wanted to end the walk and go home. I, however, had the map and became concerned for Neil's safety. However, all ended well in the end.
To be continued...

Bromley is a district of south east London, England, located 9.3 miles south east of Charing Cross. Bromley is the administrative headquarters of the London Borough of Bromley, and identified as a major metropolitan centre in the London Plan.
Bromley was historically a market town chartered since 1158 and an ancient parish in the county of Kent. Its location on a coaching route and the opening of a railway station in 1858 were key to its development, and the economic history of Bromley is underpinned by a shift from an agrarian village to commerce and retail. As part of the suburban growth of London in the 20th century, Bromley significantly increased in population and was incorporated as a municipal borough in 1903.
Bromley has developed into one of a handful of regionally significant commercial and retail districts outside central London and has formed part of Greater London since 1965. Most of Bromley including the town centre falls under the BR1 postcode district, whereas areas to the west towards Shortlands are part of BR2 instead.
Bromley is located 9.3 miles (15 km) south east of Charing Cross and is one of the major metropolitan centres identified in the London Plan. Bromley is a post town in the BR postcode area, consisting of BR1 and part of the BR2 postcode district. BR1 covers Bromley, Bickley, Sundridge Park and part of Downham; and the BR2 portion covers Hayes, Shortlands, Bickley and Bromley Common.
