Belo Horizonte Through Local Eyes - Travel Deeper Brazil (Ep. 9)
Belo Horizonte, Brazil -
Travel Deeper with me on a long weekend to the capital of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte.
I met up with a local friend and he showed me his favorite things to do in Belo Horizonte.
I explored the central market, visited the cultural center, took a day trip to Inhotim, discovered the vibrant Belo Horizonte nightlife and checked out the Feria Hippie on Sunday.
In between all this, I had a chance to see a different side of the city and interact with locals, which left me with an incredible travel experience.
I can honestly say that the people of Belo Horizonte were some of the most friendly and welcoming that I've met during my year of living in Brazil.

Belo Horizonte, MG - Brazil
Belo Horizonte is the capital of the state of Minas Gerais, located in the southeastern region of Brazil. It is the third-largest metropolis and is the third most important city of Brazil. Belo Horizonte (or Beagá, as it is also familiarly known from the sound of its initials BH in Portuguese) has a population of over 2.4 million, reaching almost 5.4 million in the official Metropolitan Area.
The first settlements in the region occurred in the early 1700s, but the city as it is known today was planned and constructed in the 1890s, in order to replace Ouro Preto as the capital of Minas Gerais. The city is well known for the contrast between contemporary and classical buildings, being the location of many modern Brazilian architectural icons, most notably the Pampulha Complex. In planning it, Brazilian engineers Aarão Reis and Francisco Bicalho found their inspiration in the town plan of Washington D.C. It is also becoming known for its internationally recognized programs in urban revitalization and food security, the latter of which has won several international accolades.
In the area surrounding Belo Horizonte there are several parks. The Parque das Mangabeiras, located six kilometres south east from the city centre in the hills of the Serra do Curral, affords a view over the city. It has an area of 2.35 km2 (580 acres), of which 0.9 km2 (220 acres) is native forest. The Mata do Jambeiro nature reserve extends over 912 hectares (2,250 acres), with vegetation typical of the Atlantic forest. More than one hundred species of birds inhabit the reserve, as well as ten different species of mammals.
Belo Horizonte is a leading cultural center, with more than twenty universities, including the traditional Federal University UFMG and several high-ranked private Universities, several museums, numerous libraries, different kinds of private and public music concerts, a diverse traditional and modern cousin, big parks - located in such places as downtown and also in the outskirts -, beautiful plaza squares, numerous options for night life in bars, restaurants and night clubs and many other aspects of the city life that lead to arts and entertainment - including that fact that the city has a couple major soccer stadiums, a traditional soccer scene and also big sports centers and private athletic unions or clubs.
The city is built on several hills and completely surrounded by mountains. The constant rising and falling of the streets sometimes makes navigation a bit tricky, but the wide avenues lined with trees are always easy guidelines. The Confins International Airport connects Belo Horizonte with many Brazilian cities and also operates international flights.
Belo Horizonte is the distribution and processing center of a rich agricultural and mining region and the nucleus of a burgeoning industrial complex. Production is centred on steel, steel products, automobiles, and textiles. Gold, manganese, and gem stones mined in the surrounding region are processed in the city.[4] Belo Horizonte is home to the Federal University of Minas Gerais.

Belo Horizonte Travel Guide - Brazil Attractive Experience
Belo Horizonte Travel Guide - Brazil Attractive Experience
Belo Horizonte is Brazil's sixth-largest city, the center of its third-largest urban area and the capital of the state of Minas Gerais. With its orderly grid plan and tree-lined avenues, it's a pleasant metropolis. For travelers, it's a good stopping point on the way to the beautiful colonial towns such as Ouro Preto and Tiradentes.
Belo Horizonte (or simply BH (beh-ah-GAH) to locals) is little over a century old. With a metropolitan population reaching more than 5 million (edging out Salvador), it was built as a planned city to take the place of Ouro Preto as the State's capital. Its layout features square sections drawn out by broad avenues, intersected diagonally by smaller streets. The city lies in the center of the Minas Gerais state, and is intended to bring together the many parts of this very diverse state.
The Metrô. snakes through the city, from Eldorado northeast to Vilarinho, tangential to the north side of downtown. Lagoinha Station is near the rodoviária (bus station), Gameleira Station is near the ExpoMinas Convention Center and Minas Shopping Station is near the Mall of the same name and Ouro Minas Palace Hotel. Belo Horizonte relies on a big and reliable taxi fleet - one of the best in Latin America. The service is also relatively inexpensive - a trip accross downtown costs around R$15 - ranking number 10 among the major Brazilian capitals The official color is white.
The city is built on several hills and is completely surrounded by mountains. There are several large parks in the immediate surroundings of Belo Horizonte. The Mangabeiras Park (Parque das Mangabeiras), 6 km (4 mi) southeast of the city centre in the hills of Curral Ridge (Serra do Curral), has a broad view of the city. It has an area of 2.35 km2 (580 acres), of which 0.9 km2 (220 acres) is covered by the native forest. The Jambeiro Woods (Mata do Jambeiro) nature reserve extends over 912 hectares (2,250 acres), with vegetation typical of the Atlantic Forest. More than 100 species of birds inhabit the reserve, as well as 10 species of mammals.
Major high-rise hotels are generally on Av. Afonso Pena or at Savassi neighborhood, while mid-range and budget accommodations are clustered around the train station. Belo Horizonte is internationally known as the capital of neighborhood bars. Every year, the city hosts the Comida di Buteco festival (Pub Foods, in an approximate translation), in which a panel selects 41 bars to be visited, and then elects the one with the best appetizers using the theme ingredient of each year.
Minas Gerais' cuisine is famous for its traditional dishes, like pão de queijo, feijão tropeiro, tutu de feijão, pork ribs, chicken-and-okra (served with a rich, brown gravy and rice) and other usually heavy, comfort-like food. The city also abounds with pizza places, barbecue houses, fine restaurants of many nationalities and other options.

A complete video about Belo Horizonte. The capital of the state of Minas Gerais, and the third largest city in Brazil. Its culture, people, nightlife, atractions and historical cities like Ouro Preto. Located in the Southeastern region, strategically positioned within Brazil and the Americas, the city is surrounded by the Serra do Curral Mountains, which serve as a natural backdrop, as well as a historical reference.
Apartment in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, designed by 2arquitetos.
Designed by 2arquitetos, an architectural office managed by Celeno Ivanovo and Luiz Henrique Ribeiro, for an art collector and lover of strong colors, this apartment was completely modified during the construction of this building in order to contemplate her necessities and characteristics. The built-in kitchen and pretty wide rooms, where can be showed her art collection, are some examples.
The first impact can be noticed at the elevator’s hall, where a colossal pivoted door divides the hall from the wide living room. Being composed by three sheets, with 1,5 meters (49 feet) each, this pivoted door was designed exclusively for this apartment.
The inspiration comes from the “Marquesa” bench, signed by Oscar Niemeyer, made of rosewood and natural straw. The door follows the materials and colors of the marquesa, and was made in demolition rosewood and the same straw of the marquesa’s seat. One sheet hides the restroom, made of strong red limestone.
Already in the entrance, a sample of the art collection. After the Sônia Ebling’s sculpture, there is the Marquesa bench and a high variety of works on the walls and pedestals.
Not only the restroom has strong colors. For the built-in kitchen, we choose a apple-green limestone, and many woodworks in purple and green tones.
The furnishing and carpets are another highlight spot. Besides many oriental carpets, there is a exclusive Odergard. Between furniture, besides Niemeyer’s signed Marquesa bench, we have icons of national and worldwide furnishing, like the chairs Cesca of Marcel Breuer at the veranda, the armchair Donna of Gaetano Pesce, the armchair Esfera, made by the brasilian Ricardo Fasanello, the armchairs LC of Le Corbusier and the Maggiolina, designed by Marco Zanusco.
The lining was designed in different levels, in order to mask the low Height and, especially, to highlight the entrance door and the Niemeyer’s Marquesa bench.
Add to all those things a spectacular view to the wooded neighborhood (not by chance called “Cidade Jardim” – garden City) and to the mountains, very typical of Belo Horizonte.

Brazilian Dancing Legend Walter Pinheiro And The Belo Horizonte Soul Movement
A couple weeks ago in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, I visited a fair in the city centre called the Hippie Fair. In a park next to this fair [Américo Renné Giannetti Municipal Park] there was a group of people dancing to soul music.
Later I found out that this was part of a movement in Belo Horizonte called Movimento Soul BH led by Walter Pinheiro.
I interviewed Water to find out more about this movement and it's history. Watch this video to hear his story.
