Gorno-Altaysk is the capital town of the Altai Republic, Siberia, Russia. Situated in the foothills of the Altai Mountains, a beautiful offbeat city. The city is located on the northern border of the Altai Republic in a valley of two rivers. I have done hitchhiking from Gorno-Altaysk to Novosibirsk which took me 6 hours to reach Novosibirsk from Gorno-Altaysk

Altai Republic (winout. Altai Republic; also widespread: Mountain Altai) - the subject of the Russian Federation, the Republic in its structure
Part of the Siberian Federal district
The relief of the Republic is characterized by high ridges separated by narrow and deep river valleys, rare wide inter-mountain basins. The highest mountain Belukha (other names: Kadyn-Bazhy, Uch-Sumer) (4509 meters) is the highest point of Siberia.
Rivers and lakes
The hydrographic network includes more than 20 thousand watercourses with a total length of more than 60 thousand km and about 7 thousand lakes with a total area of more than 600 km2. The largest rivers are Katun and Biya, which merge to form the Ob river, one of the largest rivers in Siberia. The largest lake is Teletskoye (Altyn-Kel) with a water surface area of 230,8 km2 and a depth of 325 meters.
Altai - Russia - Sergey Karpukhin's Photography
It was short, two-week' long trip to the area called Belukha, from the south, the Kazakh's side. We traveled together with a group of tourists from Ust-Kamenogorsk.
But first, some facts: Altai is a vast mountain country located in southern Siberia. This is the most mountain-reach region, not only in Siberia, but also in the entire Asian part of Russia. Beyond the Urals there's only Klyuchevskaya Sopka in Kamchatka, which is above the main peak of the Altai - Belukha, whose height is 4506 meters above the sea level.
The southern part of Altai is situated on the territory of Mongolia and China.
The Altai' snow gives the water to Biya and Katun rivers. Merging together, these two rivers form the Ob, one of the greatest rivers of Siberia. Nearby towns are Barnaul, Ust-Kamenogorsk, Biisk and Gorno-Altaisk. In the inner regions of the Altai there is very few settlements, and those are usually small village at the foothills.
Altai is quite popular among the travel and adventure fans. Despite the small population, its development and accessibility is still higher than the adjacent Sayan Mountains.
Those places are worthy of anyone's attention and its beauty and originality attracts everyone. Travelers from all walks of life can find something solely important for themselves here. The most popular in the Altai region to this day is considered the highest mountain of Katun ridge, together with its crowning glory -- Belukha.
Apart from Russians and Kazakhs, living here, the natives of Altai are the representatives of the Turkic people. From their nomadic past remains their love for horses.
During the summer, it's a good opportunity for them to earn some extra money by letting the animals as a vehicles for getting to Belukha to numerous tourist and travellers groups that come here.
It is very handy, as among the travelers are also the elderly people and very young children. Beautiful snow-capped mountains, swift rivers, well-traversed taiga routes and the wild flowerbeds of Altai are able to win the hearts of all nature lovers. Belukha itself, and everything that surrounds it, is one of the wonders of the world, worthy to see it. And love forever after.

Federal highway R256 Chuiski hit the top ten most beautiful roads in the world by the popular science magazine National Geographic.
Every year, thousands of Novosibirsk travel to Altai for one of the world's most beautiful roads. For the unprepossessing track names: Novosibirsk - Tashanta, M52 or R256 - is the incredible beauty that should see at least once in everyone's life. This ancient road - the first thread, connecting Russia and China many centuries ago. Continue on Chuysk - like having to cross the whole of Russia.
The path begins in Biysk, with birch groves and villages, one of which was born the writer Vasily Shukshin. And in a hundred kilometers, is to pass Gorno-Altaisk, it seems as if you find yourself in the time of development of Siberia: the stormy waters of Katun, rocky gorges and green valleys. Starting mountain taiga. You turn to the left - you will get to the Teletskoye Lake, to the right - to the magnificent Belukha, where Roerich Shambhala searched on the way to the Himalayas. And if you go straight all the time - will look Kurai steppe at the foot of North-Chuya ridge. If desired, you can drive a few kilometers and walk up to the eternal snows. The Kurai steppe meet last islands of the taiga, and already the pass begins the real steppe, where there are yurts and nomads wandering camel caravans. This trip is not necessary to plan for a week, after each turn - an occasion to separate a little trip.
References to the current Chui tract, formerly known as Mughal, you can find more in the Chinese thousands of years ago. From then until the beginning of XX century, it was just a mountain path, which was used by merchants and pilgrims journeyed to the sacred tree in the upper reaches of the Katun River. Wheeled road from Ongudai to Kosh-Agach (255 km) have arranged only by 1903. Today Chuiski - one of the few roads in the world, awarded his own museum. It is located in a building Biysk Local Lore Museum - here you can see archive documents and photos, surround the layout of the road, pictures and dioramas.

SUMMARY
=======
Burkhanism or Ak Jang (Altay: Ак јаҥ) is a new religious movement that flourished among the indigenous people of Russia's Gorno Altai region (okrug) between 1904 and the 1930s. Czarist Russia was suspicious of the movement's potential to stir up native unrest and perhaps involve outside powers. The Soviet authorities ultimately suppressed it for fear of its potential to unify Siberian Turkic peoples under a common nationalism.
Originally millenarian, charismatic and anti-shamanic, the Burkhanist movement gradually lost most of these qualities—becoming increasingly routine, institutionalized (around a hierarchy of oral epic singers), and accommodating itself to the pre-existing Altaian folk religion. It exists today in several revival forms.
On the whole, the Burkhanist movement was shown to be a syncretistic phenomenon combining elements of ancient pre-Shamanist, Shamanist, Lamaist and Orthodox Christian beliefs. According to a Professor of Tomsk State University L. Sherstova, it emerged in response to the needs of a new people - the Altai-kizhi or Altaians who sought to distinguish themselves from the neighboring and related tribes and for whom Burkhanism became a religious form of their ethnic identity.
