South of France Hiking - Calanque de Sugition
Calanque de Sugiton was our favorite hike in this area because of the beautiful and interesting rock formations for scrambling and exploring. If I could pick only one calanque to visit, this would be it.

Hike from Cassis to Belvédère d'En Vau
The port town of Cassis east of Marseille is one of the gateways to Massif de Calanques. We hiked from the port first following the GR98 trail. Our goal was Belvédère d'En Vau, a viewing point 170m above the Calanque d'En Vau, considered by many as the most picturesque of the calanques. The area has been a national park since 2012. We continued along the GR98 trail as far as to Col de l'Oule where we forked left(south) to reach the Bélvèdere d'En Vau. On the way back to Cassis, we chose a longer inland route passing la Gardiole Maison Forestière and Auberge de jeunesse.
The Belvédère can also be reached from the Gardiole parking by the D559 road running between Cassis and Marseille.
A hiking map is strongly recommended.

Places to see in ( Marseille - France ) Parc national des Calanques
Places to see in ( Marseille - France ) Parc national des Calanques
Calanques National Park is a national park located in southern France, established in 2012. It extends over 520 km², of which 85 km² is land, while the remaining is marine area. It includes parts of the Massif des Calanques stretching between Marseille and Cassis.
Marseille abuts the wild and spectacular Parc National des Calanques, a 20km stretch of high, rocky promontories, rising from brilliant-turquoise Mediterranean waters. The sheer cliffs are occasionally interrupted by small idyllic beaches, some impossible to reach without a kayak. The Marseillais cherish the Calanques, and come here to soak up the sun or take a long hike. The promontories have been protected since 1975 and shelter an extraordinary wealth of flora and fauna: 900 plant species, Bonelli’s eagle, and Europe’s largest lizard (the 60cm eyed lizard) and longest snake (the 2m Montpellier snake).
From October to June the best way to see the Calanques (including the 500 sq km of the rugged inland Massif des Calanques) is to hike the many maquis-lined trails. Marseille’s tourist office leads guided walks (no kids under eight) and has information about trail and road closures. It also has an excellent hiking map of the various calanques, as does Cassis’ tourist office, and their websites.
Of the many calanques along the coastline, the most easily accessible are Calanque de Sormiou and Calanque de Morgiou, while remote inlets such Calanque d’En Vau and Calanque de Port-Miou take dedication and time to reach – either on foot or by kayak.
In July and August trails close due to fire danger: the only option then is to take a boat tour with Croisières Marseille Calanques from Marseille or Cassis. Check in advance if you’re hoping to be able to stop for a swim, as only a few tours allow this, such as the one offered by Icard Maritime.
Otherwise, you’ll have to drive, cycle or take public transport, though roads are rough, parking scarce and the going slow. The roads into each calanque are often closed to drivers, unless they have a reservation at one of the calanque restaurants. You must instead park at a public lot, then walk the rest of the way in.
The best way to reach the calanques is by sea – either by boat, or by hiring a kayak from Marseille or Cassis. Operators such as Destination Calanques Kayak and Raskas Kayak organise sea-kayaking tours; local tourist offices have details of lots of other hire companies. Calanc’O also offers paddle boarding.
For access to the calanques closest to Marseille, drive or take bus 19 down the coast to its terminus at La Madrague, then switch to bus 20 to Callelongue, a small calanque with restaurants (note that the road to Callelongue is open to cars weekdays only mid-April to May and closed entirely June to September). From there you can walk to Calanque de la Mounine and Calanque de Marseilleveyre along spectacular trails over the clifftops.
Calanque de Sugiton is also easy to access without a car. Take bus 21 from av du Prado, at Castellane, towards Luminy and get off at the last stop. From there follow the path (about a 45-minute walk).
( Marseille - France ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Marseille . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Marseille - France

Calanques d'En Vau, un petit coin de paradis

The beauty of Les Calanques de Cassis, Marseille, France
Les Calanques de Cassis, Marseille, France - One of the highlights along the coast of southern France, the calanques are a series of limestone cliffs, fjords and rocky promontories plunging into the Mediterranean along about 20 kilometres of coastline between Marseille and Cassis in Provence. In places there are pine trees clinging to the gleaming rock, adding further to the dramatic appeal.
The Calanques are found along the coast to the south-east of Marseille, and are usually accessed from the attractive harbour town at Cassis.
The coast and surrounding countryside to the east of Marseille has now been designated as the Calanques National Park, one of just seven French national parks on mainland France.
Explore the Marseille Calanques
The calanques around Cassis are the most accessible to visitors, while En Vau, a little further to the west, is perhaps the most beautiful because of the height of the cliffs here as well as the beach and rocks sticking out of the water. In places along the calanques the cliffs reach a height of 400 metres.
Heading west from Cassis the calanques (in order) are: Port Miou (easily reached on foot from Cassis), Port Pin, En Vau, L'Oule, Devenson, L'Oeil de Verre, Sugiton and Morgiou. Morgiou and nearby Sormiou, to the west of the calanques, can also be reached by road.
France This Way comment: this is one of our favourite stretches of coast in France and we highly recommend you take the trip along the calanques from Cassis if you are in this region!
As well as being a scenic attraction there are also several small beaches set among the rocks, with pine trees climbing the hill behind the beaches, for example at En Vau and Port Pin, where you can swim between the cliffs - very dramatic!
How to explore the calanques
Boat
One particularly stunning way to see the calanques is by taking a boat trip from Cassis along the coast. Tickets for the boats are available in the harbour at Cassis - 13 euros to visit three calanques (45 minutes), 15 euros to visit 5 calanques (65 minutes) and 19 euros to visit eight calanques (90 minutes).
Whichever boat trip you choose you won't be disappointed, as the little boat travels around the beautiful coastline with a new surprise around each corner. After many years of exploring much of France I still consider the boat trip I took here as one of my favourite days out!
Hiking
The other option to explore is on foot by hiking along the coastline - this region really is a walker's paradise. There are also designated climbing areas in the calanques. Note that because of fire risk, there are significant restrictions on access to the inland regions, especially during July and August.
Diving
The coastline around the Marseille calanques is very popular with divers, although this is perhaps not the easiest way to get a good look at the calanques as a whole!.
Note - the underwater Cosquer cave at Morgiou contains some of the oldest cave paintings in the world - said to rival those at Lascaux. Unfortunately the entrance is 35 metres under water and access is prohibited even if you do come equipped with diving equipment!
Attractions near the Marseille calanques
There is a beach at Cassis and the town itself is pleasant to explore. Heading east from Cassis you should follow the coast road towards La Ciotat for more impressive coastal scenery. - Les Calanques de Cassis, Marseille, France
