Bendigo Tramways | Deborah Gold Mine - Bendigo Tram Depot in a W Class Tram
In this video we visit Bendigo and it's historic tramway which runs from the Deborah Gold Mine Museum to the Joss House Temple at the other end of Benigo next to the Swan Hill train line. We travel on an artisticly decorated W Class tram from down in Melbourne from the Gold Mine to the Bendigo Tram Depot which is located approximately halfway down the tram route. We also see few of Bendigo's nicely painted Volgren Optimus buses and some other heritage trams.
Bendigo Tramways
The Bendigo Tramways have been in operation since June 1890. From that time, the citizens of Bendigo have experienced battery, steam and electric traction as the principal modes of propulsion for their trams. Over the years, the Bendigo Tramways have been owned by various operators who adopted different corporate identities.
The tramway operators' identities and the periods during which they had control of daily tram services were:
The Sandhurst and Eaglehawk Electric Tramway Company Ltd 14th June 1890 to 23rd September 1890 battery
The Bendigo Tramways Company Limited 1st February 1892 to June 1902 steam
The Electric Supply Company of Victoria 15th April 1903 to 30th June 1934 electric
The State Electricity Commission of Victoria 30th June 1934 to 16th April 1972 electric
The Bendigo Trust 9th December 1972 to present electric
Despite these varied names, to most people, the tramways at Bendigo were simply known as the Bendigo Tramways - a name that has endured right up to the present day.
On 11th September 1972, the State Government of Victoria granted The Bendigo Trust permission to operate a Vintage 'Talking' Tram tourist service between the Central Deborah Gold Mine in Violet Street, through Bendigo and on to the Bendigo Joss House Temple at North Bendigo. Since then, the Trust has continued to maintain and operate the tramway and as of 16 October 2010 has now been custodian of the tramways longer than any other operator.

Bendigo
Bendigo is a city in Victoria, Australia, located very close to the geographical centre of the state and approximately 150 kilometres north west of the state capital, Melbourne. Bendigo has an urban population of 82,794 making it the fourth largest inland city in Australia and fourth most populous city in the state. It is the administrative centre for the City of Greater Bendigo which encompasses both the urban area and outlying towns spanning an area of approximately 3,000 square kilometres and over 111,000 people.
The discovery of gold in the soils of Bendigo during the 1850s made it one of the most significant Victorian era boomtowns in Australia. News of the finds intensified the Victorian gold rush bringing an influx of migrants to the city from around the world within a year and transforming it from a sheep station to a major settlement in the newly proclaimed Colony of Victoria. Once the alluvial gold had been mined out, mining companies were formed to exploit the rich underground quartz reef gold. Since 1851 about 25 million ounces of gold have been extracted from Bendigo's goldmines, making it the highest producing goldfield in Australia in the 19th century and the largest gold mining economy in eastern Australia. It is also notable for its Victorian architectural heritage. The city took its name from the Bendigo Creek and its residents from the earliest days of the goldrush have been called Bendigonians.
