Liaoning Province Vlog: Downtown Shenyang, Koreatown!

September 20, 2014
We were so excited to visit northeast China for the first time! We flew into Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning Province, from Shanghai on a direct Spring Air flight. Instead of taking a taxi into the city, we opted to try public transportation. The urban tram to BaiTaHeLu Station cost just 2 RMB per person, but it was extremely slow. From there we had to walk about five minutes to the subway station of the same name. Shenyang has just two subway lines, so it's very easy system to navigate. We had to transfer once before arriving at our final destination, Shenyang Station. It took almost 1 hour and 30 minutes to get from the airport to Shenyang Station. Because the cost of living is relatively low, taxi meters start at just 8 RMB and public transport is slow, we would opt for a taxi the next time around.
We spent the day exploring downtown Shenyang on foot. We were fascinated by ZhongShan Square the home of an enormous Chairman Mao statue. We especially loved seeing the statue at night when so many different groups gathered in the square for aerobics, dancing, break dancing, badminton, and biking.
Another point of interest is TaiYuan, the underground shopping streets that run between ZhongShan Square and Shenyang Station. It's recently undergone major renovations that weren't completely done by the time we visited. But we think it'll be an awesome food and shopping destination once it's 100% finished. For anyone looking to get a manicure or pedicure, Glo recommends TaiYuan where she got a gel manicure for just 30 RMB!
For dinner we had Korean BBQ in XiTa, which is a Koreatown filled with Korean restaurants and shops. Given Shenyang's proximity to North Korea, the city and province as a whole have a reputation for excellent Korean food. We were not disappointed! This was definitely the best Korean food we've so far had in China! And it cost just 120 RMB for the entire dinner!
Lastly, we stayed at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Zhongshan location. The room was comfortable, and the staff were helpful and spoke a bit of English. It's within walking distance of Shenyang Station, but it's a long walk (about 20 minutes).
Thank you for watching!
See you four days for our next upload!

China steam finale - Beitai steelworks September 2011
This video features steam locomotives at work in an iron and steel works in China. Beitai is 14 km south-west of Benxi and Benxi is 84 km south-east of Shenyang.
Beiying Iron & Steel (Group) Co., Ltd is the holding subsidiary of Beitai Iron & Steel (Group) Co., Ltd. This company is located in Beitai Town, Pingshang District, Benxi City. It is an iron and steel complex incorporating mining, ore dressing, coking, power generation, sintering, iron-making, steel-making and rolling. Its annual production capacity of pig iron is 8.5 million tons, steel billet 9 million and finished steel product 10 million tons. The company has blast furnaces with total volume of 6100 cubic meters and steel converters with gross tonnage of 560 tons. It annually produces 1.5 million tons of steel bars , 3.5 million tons of wire rods, 1 million tons of medium strip and over 4 million tons of hot rolled coil.
The Beitai steelworks is located alongside the Chinese National Railway line from Liaoyang to Benxi. The site consists of two separate plants. To the east is the blast furnace area and about five kilometres further west is the steel making plant. A fleet of SY class steam locomotives is employed in and around the two plants, shunting raw materials into the blast furnace area, taking trains of molten iron to the steelworks and bringing back trains of raw materials, and dumping hot slag. Exchange sidings with the CNR exist at both sites.
Official visits are now possible in organised groups, at least when you have the right contacts. Security is tight, so illegal entry is strongly discouraged.
There are 3 groups of blast furnaces, two groups are served by steam. There are numerous diesels. Steam will probably be phased out slowly.
The steam site at Beitai is quite small compared with the former steam fleets of works at Anshan, Panzhihua, Benxi or Baotou. But Beitai remains a rare survivor of industrial steam in the steel industry. Go there before it is too late!
With thanks to Tanago tours. This video may not be seen in Germany for music copyright reasons. The music is Industriial Revolution part 1 by Jarre.
MARCH 2012 UPDATE
The Beitai steel works is currently building a group of new blast furnaces at the new plant, just aside the old steel mill. Once the new blast furnaces are operational (planned for end of 2012), the steel works will have enough capacity to shut down the old plant. As the new plant will use automated transportation and diesel locomotives, it will also mean the end of the use of SY steam locomotives.
Tanago has visited the steel works four times now, establishing an excellent relationship with the local management, that even allowed us to visit the mill´s running shed.
Tanago will return to Beitai later this year for a - most likely - last visit of the steam locomotives at the blast furnces, the slag trains, and fantastic night photography opportunities.

STORYLINE
With reports that China's leaders had agreed to appropriate measures against their long-time ally North Korea on Friday, life on the border between the two countries continued as usual.
A museum and a broken bridge commemorating the history of the Korean War in the 1950s remain popular tourist spots in China's border city of Dandong.
Some visitors expressed hope that China's long-standing links with neighbouring North Korea would be maintained, despite the North's declared nuclear test.
The friendship of China and North Korea was consolidated during the Korean War. I hope the close friendship of the two countries can last forever, said one visiting student.
China has embarked on a flurry of diplomatic activity since North Korea announced on Monday it had carried out a nuclear test.
War planes, tanks and guns used in the Korean War are displayed for visitors to the museum, located in a mountain of Dandong city.
Videos of historic documentaries from the period are played on television sets inside.
There are large number of old photographs showing China's volunteer soldiers fighting American troops during the war.
China sent more than 2.9 (m) million volunteer soldiers to North Korea during the war, according to introduction materials released by the museum.
180-thousand of them died on the battlefield, the materials said.
Many older people think it should be kept as it is for future generations.

Shenyang Vlog: Beiling Park & the Aviation Museum!
January 3 & 6, 2015
instagram.com/timandglo
Our first trip of 2015 was to northeastern China! We returned to Shenyang, and the city was completely transformed from our first visit in fall 2014. Shanghai's winters are very mild, so this trip gave us an opportunity to truly experience winter in China. If you happen to be in Shenyang during the colder months of the year, definitely visit Beiling Park which turns into a winter wonderland! We had SO much fun snow tubing there! Each tube cost just 50 RMB for a one-hour rental; we also had to pay a 100 RMB security deposit for each snow tube. There are tons of other activities to choose from...fun for all ages! All the winter activities take place on the frozen lakes. It's beautiful!
Zhaoling Tomb is located inside Beiling Park. You have to pay a separate admissions fee to enter. We didn't mind paying the low season entrance fee of 30 RMB, but the price doubles in the high season to 60 RMB per person.
On a separate day Tim explored the Shenyang Aviation Museum. His favorite part was re-enacting scenes from Top Gun while sitting in the cockpit of a real MIG! Lol.
As always, happy travels!! And thank you for watching!!

Northeast China Vlog 东北三省 (Shenyang, Changchun, Harbin)
Hello! ヽ(⊙ᗜ⊙)ノ
One year later, with all my copyright music issues fixed, this is finally out for y'all to check out.
So at the beginning of last year (Jan-Feb 2018), my brother and I went on a two-man journey to the three provinces of Northeast China (Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang) and somehow survived a week painfully cold weather.

Learning a new language can be hard. The reason why I make these videos about culture and traveling is because I believe it not only keeps me motivated, but maybe it can motivate others too! I feel so curious about other places in the world and it's so exciting to constantly learn new things; if you are here watching this video, you must be similar and I'm glad we ran into each other! Let's fill this space with support of diverse knowledge and curiosity.
Beitai Steelworks - The Most Explosive Video of 2011?
Probably not. But it was pretty hot. Fast forward to the last 2 minutes or so if you are getting bored with the build up to the main event. Filmed on the Far Rail Tour to North East China in December 2011.
The title is reference to the 3 other gricers who were filming that day and not to any other explosion elsewhere in the world in 2011.
Beitai Steelworks at Benxi, Liaoning, north east China, had 9 SY 2-8-0 locomotives for shunting around the plant taking molten iron to the steelworks (out of bounds) and for dumping hot slag. They also have a steam crane for laying or removing track and lifting heavy equipment. Steam ended here in 2013.
Extracts from this video have been used by Ballet Cymru (Wales) and Vice TV, who even paid me for it.
