Beomeosa Temple Stay Review in Busan South Korea
A review of the overnight temple stay at the Beomeosa Temple (범어사) in Busan. Located in the mountains above Busan, the Beomeosa Temple was built in the year 678. and today offers programs whereby visitors can experience what it is like to live like a Korean Buddhist monk. My third full day in South Korea continued in the city of Busan, where my group and I had the amazing opportunity to stay overnight at Beomeosa Temple just outside the city. Come join me as I have my first overnight Buddhist temple experience!

Right off the bat, lugging my carry-on up the worn stairs leading to the men’s quarters was tough! There are men’s quarters and women’s quarters. We would sleep in a communal area and share a communal bathroom.
I took my shoes off and got my uniform, which I’d wear for the next 12 hours. They’re almost like pajamas! They’re super soft and comfortable and I loved the color! From there, Sam and I returned to the hall, where we met the supporting monk, who taught us how to do three bows. We were also informed of the temple’s rules.
You have to be very quiet in the temple and there are areas where you can’t speak at all. We also can’t film in certain areas. After finishing our bows, we took a tour.
There are 3 gates to get to the main temple ground area. The first is the one-pillar gate because there’s only 1 row of pillars. I learned that the temple’s name translates to the Golden Fish Temple.
Through the second gate, we learned that Buddhism is different depending on the country you’re in. The gate has 4 heavenly kings who fight off evil spirits. The gates are all different and have symbolic meanings. We also saw a place where the monks will play instruments, including drums, gongs, and bells before the morning and evening ceremonies.
At 5:30, it was time for a Buddhist monk dinner! We dined on mats, traditional-style. We learned where to position our four bowls, chopsticks, and spoon. You’re given some water and then the rice goes into your largest bowl. Next was seaweed-style soup, and the banchan goes into your bowl for side dishes. You have to eat everything you take, so don’t take too much! To eat, you lift the bowl up to your face.
Once you start eating, you can’t talk at all! After you eat, you clean each bowl with the water, wash them, and dry them. My legs started cramping up during my meal, so that was the hardest part!
Then, we went to go see the monks ring the gong. It was very intricate and rhythmic and fascinating to watch! We had to turn off the cameras for the evening chanting ceremony, which is a 15-minute ceremony to end the day. You have to do lots of bowing!
Then we went to another activity, where we had to do 108 bows. They got really tough as they went on! Then, we put together 108 beads into a bracelet. I loved mine! I was going to wear it until it falls off.
After that, it was time for bed! It was basically a big sleepover! Lights out were at 9:30 and wake-up was at 5 a.m. The drums started at 4:30. I slept pretty good except for the mosquitoes!
The morning exercise was a breathing meditation exercise for 30 minutes. We had a beautiful view and it was so peaceful out! Then it was time for a traditional buffet-style breakfast!
For breakfast, we ate in the main dining hall. We had rice, kimchi, vegetables, and more. The kimchi was spicy, while the seaweed was earthy and crunchy. After you eat, you wash your own dish. You have to clean it well because no one cleans it after you! Let your dish dry and place it on the counter.
Next, we walked to a nearby temple. The main temple has 10 smaller ones surrounding it. This one was famous because its monk invented a form of martial arts. There were lots of images of fictional characters and gods. The Buddha is at the very top!
Then we had tea with orange for a half hour and talked with the monk!

Beomeosa Temple & Sea of Rocks - Busan/South Korea
Beomeosa (Temple of the Nirvana Fish) is a head temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism in Cheongnyong-dong, Geumjeong-gu. Built on the slopes of Geumjeongsan, it is one of the country's most known urban temples. The mountain where Beomeosa is found is said to have huge rock at the summit where there is a golden well which never, ever dries up. The water of this well is believed to have very special magical properties as one day a golden fish came from heaven and has lived there ever since. Beom(범;梵) = nirvana - eo(어;魚) = fish - sa(사;寺) = temple. Thus the name of the temple came to be Heavenly Fish. It is also claimed that the fish came from Nirvana, the Buddhist state of non-suffering. Therefore, the temple also became known as The temple where fish from Nirvana Play.

Come join us for a Korean Temple Stay at Beomeosa Buddhist Temple (범어사) located in a gorgeous mountain setting just outside of Busan, South Korea. For years I had dreamed of experiencing a Korea Temple Stay; however, while living in Korea I always put it off thinking I'll do it next week. Fortunately, on this most recent trip back to South Korea I had a chance to finally do an overnight immersive temple stay.
Our program included Buddhist temple Korean food (dinner and breakfast); lectures on Buddhist practices, rules and history; meditation and bowing; a complete tour of the temple grounds and drumming ceremony. All in all this Korean Temple Stay was a total immersive experience and something I'll never forget. It was such an enlightening and tranquil experience I would honestly do it again if I have the chance.

Korean Temple Stay at Beomeosa Buddhist Temple (범어사) in Busan, South Korea
Hey guys! We are Samuel and Audrey, a vlogging travel couple from Canada. In this travel channel we share our travel and food vlogs while touring the world.
Our most recent trip was to South Korea where I embarked upon a two-week adventure without Audrey. Invited as part of a YouTube vlogging trip, organized by KTO, I spent the first week traveling with other YouTubers in Seoul, Busan and Gyeongju. My second week included independent exploration of Korea with my good friend and fellow YouTuber David of DavidsBeenHere.
Having lived and traveled in South Korea, the chance to return to one of my favorite countries was one of the biggest surprises of 2019. On this particular trip, I had an opportunity to do many things I had not previously covered including a visit to the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone between South Korea and North Korea), a Buddhist Temple Stay and a Korean cooking class. It was almost as if the program designed by KTO knew exactly what I had missed out on before.
Obviously, a huge highlight from the two weeks I spent revisiting Korea was the food. I feasted on all of my favorite Korean dishes including Korean barbecue, dolsot bibimbap, haemul pajeon, tteokbokki, bulgogi, kimbap and many others. I can honestly say that Korean food is world-class and is one of my top 5 favorite cuisines in the world. Aside from trying familiar dishes, I had the opportunity to sample raw Korean seafood for the first time.
While visiting Seoul, highlights included going to Gyeongbokgung Palace, Namsan Seoul Tower, Jogyesa Temple and Hongdae. As one of the biggest cities in the world, I barely scratched the surface of things to do in Seoul.
Spending extended time in Busan was my favorite part about the trip with top highlights including a Korean temple stay, fresh fish markets and a Korean baseball game. It was from Busan that we ended up taking a day-trip to Daegu where we enjoyed a traditional Korean market and tried Galbi-Jjim for the first time.

Taking Metro & Bus at Busan to Beomeosa Temple - South Korea
How to get there?
Take metro line 1 (Orange line) to Beomeosa station (# 133). Get out at Exit 5 or Exit 7 and follow the street between the two exits to Samsin Bus Stop. From there take bus No. 90 for another 10 minutes or so.
Admission: Free!
Opening hours: Mon-Sun 8:30 - 17:30
The name Beomeosa comes from the three words Beom (Nirvana), Eo (Fish) and Sa (Temple).
Beomeosa Temple is located at the edge of Mt. Geumjeongsan, a famous mountain in Busan. About 1,300 years ago it was constructed by monk Ui Sang in the 18th year (678) of King Munmu (reign 661~681) of the Silla Kingdom (the kingdom mainly occupied the Gyeongsang-do Province region in 678A.D.). In the geography book 'Donggukyeojiseungram' the origin of Beomeosa Temple is written as follows:
There is a well on the top of Mt. Geumjeongsan and the water of that well is gold. The golden fish in the well rode the colorful clouds and came down from the sky. This is why the mountain is named Geumsaem (gold well) and the temple is named 'fish from heaven'.
The original Beomeosa Temple building was lost during Imjinwaeran Invasion (Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592) but was renovated in 1713, which remains as it now is. Daeungjeon is one of the most delicate and luxurious architectures of the Joseon Dynasty (1392~1910). There is Iljumun, the three-story pagoda with four pillars, built in the 9th century, and seven royal palace wings, pavilions, three gates, and eleven hermitages. Designated as a natural monument, the wisteria woods and valleys are most beautiful in May.

Haedong Yonggungsa Temple (해동 용궁사) - Busan/South Korea
After being to Beomeosa Temple on the slopes of Mt. Geumjeongsan it was time to complete the perfect circle of Feng Shui on one day and head over to Haedong Yonggungsa, Temple by the Sea. Haesu Gwaneum Daebul (Seawater Great Goddess Buddha), Daeungjeon Main Sanctuary, Yongwangdang Shrine, Gulbeop Buddhist Sanctum (enclosed in a cave), and a three-story pagoda with four lions can all be seen looking out over the ocean.
We took metro again to Jangsan station (201) and from there it was easiest and fastest to take a taxi for another 10-15 minutes until arriving at the temple.
Haedong Yonggung Temple (Hangul: 해동 용궁사) is a Buddhist temple in Gijang-gun, Busan, South Korea. The temple was built in 1376 by the teacher known as Naong during the Goryeo Dynasty. The temple complex is a large one and one of few in Korea to be set on the seaside. As such, combined with its proximity to Haeundae Beach and the east side of Busan, the temple is popular with sightseers, particularly during Buddha's Birthday celebrations when the complex is decorated with paper lanterns.

After months, actual MONTHS of being caught up with *coughs real life, I'm back and I'm editing ????????????
In this episode, I spent one of the most relaxing days ever in my whole month's stay in Busan. I really enjoyed visiting the temple because it was nice to just be in a place that was quiet and calming and surrounded by nature. On top of that, the weather was really on our side and it made the trip even more relaxing than it already was. I don't know, I can't word out my whole experience there. It was just amazing.
