Beppu Onsen (別府温泉?) is a group of hot springs in the city of Beppu, Ōita in Japan. Beppu Onsen is divided into eight major hot spring areas known as Beppu Hatto.
The most significant characteristic of Beppu's hot springs is the richness of its resources. The volume of water discharged is second only to that of the Yellowstone National Park in the United States, the largest hot spring resort in the world.
There are 2,909 hot spring vents within the city, and these account for more than 10% of the 27,644 hot spring vents in Japan, according to a survey conducted by the Ministry of the Environment in 2004. Staistics from the Beppu City Hall show that more than 130,000 tons of hot spring water gushes from the ground every day. This is the second largest amount of hot spring water discharge in the world, and the largest amount in Japan.

The typical eight hot spring-areas in the city are collectively called Beppu Hatto. There are 11 classified types of hot spring waters in the world, and we have confirmed all but one in the city. You can enjoy a variety of hot springs, such as sand baths, mud baths and steam baths. A wide range of quality of the springs enables you to do a functional bathing. Also you can find a tasteful old atmosphere in some bathing facilities such as Takegawara Onsen.

Besides Takegawara's backstreet walk, there are some walking tours called Beppu Hatto Walk provided by volunteers in each area of Beppu Hatto. They will take you around the recommended local spots for you to learn the history of Beppu as well as to communicate with locals.

In autumn, the Beppu Dance Festa entertains you with its unique dance performance. In the Yoi Yoi Onna Matsuri (Women's Festival) to announce the beginning of the year-end party season, you can see women of the pubs of downtown carrying Mikoshi (portable shrines) around the street. In winter at the Christmas time, the amazing fireworks festival which can rarely be seen elsewhere will please your eyes.

別府は世界でも第2位の温泉湧出量を誇っています。今回は、別府に来た時にぜひ訪れてほしい2つの温泉をご紹介します。
奥みょうばん山荘（温泉） (1:41～）
別府駅から少し距離はありますが、散策をしつつ、質の高い温泉を求めるならオススメです！家族や友達で行ってみてはどうでしょうか？外国人の方でも、プライベートな温泉なので恥ずかしくないです。
温泉の休憩所で、温泉卵が1個50円で食べられるので、是非！15時間丹念に熟成させているので、温泉の風味が沁み込んでいて、塩なしでも超ウマいです！

柴石温泉（4：20～）
別府の観光スポットとして有名な「地獄めぐり」の一つである「血の池地獄」へ向かう道の途中にあります。柴関温泉は別府銘泉である「別府八湯」の１つです。動画では紹介していませんが、家族風呂もあり1風呂1620円です。

It is like second or third rank in the amount of hot spring spots in the world. Today we are introducing 2 Onsen that we recommend you when you guys come to Beppu!!
Okumyouban Sansou Beppu Onsen（奥みょうばん山荘 温泉）:（1：21～）
First onsen that we introduced. It is alittle bit far from Beppu station but if you like walking in the woods for few minutes and good quality onsen, it is definitely worth taking the time going there. Since the onsen is private for every customer there is no worry of feeling embarrassed….
Make sure to try the egg that is available in the building. It is very cheap (50yen) and very delicious!!!
30 minutes from Beppu station towards Myouban（明礬） (actually!).
500 yen per person using the onsen.

Shibaseki Beppu Onsen（柴石温泉）: （4：20～）
The second onsen that we introduced. This is also far from Beppu station but it is by the road towards the Chinoike-Jigoku（血の池地獄） one of the Jigoku-Meguri（地獄巡り）, biggest touring spot in Beppu. This might have a better access than the Okumyouban-sansou（奥みょうばん山荘） introduced earlier.
Shibaseki-Onsen has a long history and it is also registered in the Beppu-Hatto （別府八湯）, one of the eight biggest onsen area in Beppu.
Family Bath is also available for onsen beginners!!

The custard which uses steam from the onsen to cook it has a rich flavor which includes ingredients from the hot spring itself. One of its exquisite characteristics is the slightly bitter caramel.

“SHINFURO”was filmed with special permission. Wearing swimsuits and swimming are not allowed inside actual hot springs. Also, hot springs do not come equipped with diving boards.

【ストーリー】
とある山に住む一匹の猿(菊千代くん)。 日頃の猿社会に疲れ、癒しを求めて、大分市に旅へ出る。
偶然か必然か、大分市は日本屈指の猿山である「高崎山」がある珍しい街。 温泉や、美術館、グルメなどを満喫し、観光している途中、高崎山に住む世界を沸かせた猿「シャーロット」の存在を知り恋に落ちる。
高崎山を目指してシャーロットに会いに行く決意をするが…その結末はいかに?
