We went on a day trip from Fukuoka to Beppu on the Sonic Limited Express train (about 2 hours). From Beppu Station you can take the bus to the first 5 hells in the Kannawa district, then another bus to the final 2 hells. The hells we visited are: Umi Jigoku, Oniishibozu Jigoku, Kamado Jigoku, Oniyama Jigoku, Shiraike Jigoku, Chinoike Jigoku and Tatsumaki Jigoku. They're all natural hot springs, the same type as found in Japanese onsen. They really are so strange and unusual, and this was the highlight of my time in Kyushu.

Japan: Amusement BATH? World’s first hot tub theme park opens in Beppu
The world’s first hot tub theme park has opened its doors for visitors in a sold-out event in the Japanese city of Beppu, Saturday.
There are plenty of rides which include bathing unlike in a regular amusement park which don't have hot springs,' Sashihar, a volunteer at the park, said.

Takasakiyama Monkey Park, Beppu, Oita Japan ???? 別府市の高崎山猿 ???? Japan As It Truly Is
Takasakiyama is an amazing reserve of over 500 monkeys (macaques) in Oita Prefecture, Japan. It's about 10 minutes by bus from Beppu Station, and if you want to see a large aquarium next to it, get the Monkey Marine Ticket for 2,200 yen at the Beppu Station tourist info office. Technically the park is in Oita City, but it's just so close when you visit Beppu.
There are several monkey parks in Japan; perhaps the Iwatayama Monkey Park in Kyoto is more famous since Kyoto is so big, but Takasakiyama is by far better.

Beppu is one of Japan’s most famous hot spring resorts with the largest volume of hot water in the world apart from Yellowstone in the United States and the largest number of hot spring sources in Japan. Beppu contains 9 nine spectacular hot springs, which are sometimes referred to as the “nine hells of Beppu”, and are for viewing rather than bathing. The most photogenic of the nine hells is the “Blood Pond Hell” featuring a pond of hot, red water.

The typical eight hot spring-areas in the city are collectively called Beppu Hatto. There are 11 classified types of hot spring waters in the world, and we have confirmed all but one in the city. You can enjoy a variety of hot springs, such as sand baths, mud baths and steam baths. A wide range of quality of the springs enables you to do a functional bathing. Also you can find a tasteful old atmosphere in some bathing facilities such as Takegawara Onsen.

We took the shinkansen down to Kyushu to visit the small hot spring town Beppu, and then stay at a lovely ryokan in Yufuin.

Beppu:
First we took the Shinkansen (with our JR pass) from Shin-Osaka to Kokura, where we then took the Sonic Express to Beppu station. I think the whole trip took about 4 hours. We used this website to search for the best route:
Nishitetsu Resort Inn Beppu
We stayed at this hotel for 1 night, and we had a pleasant stay. It was quite close to the station and the beach (although it wasn’t beach season yet), and it also had a nice hot spring and good breakfast. The room was a bit small tho :’D
Aqua Garden at Suginoi Hotel
From Beppu station we took a free shuttle bus up to this hotel located on the hill, where you can look out over the city. They have a place called the Aqua Garden where you can wear swimsuits and bath together.
Toyotsune Honten
Right around the corner of our hotel we found this little place with lots of traditional japanese food. In the evening you can choose from different multi-course meals (kaiseki). Apparently they are famous for their tempura don, or tokujo tendon, but we decided to go for a Shiki Set and the Omakase Gozen (I think?? maybe we only had the “Mini Gozen”, I can’t remeber)

Yufuin:
The next day we took a train from Beppu station to Yufuin station, where we stayed at a wonderful ryokan nestled on top of a hill: Yufuin Sanso Waremokou. Ryokan are Japanese style inns found throughout the country, especially in hot spring resorts such as Beppu and Yufuin.
In our room we had two private open-air hot springs (onsen), and one bath inside as well. There was also a big open-air hot spring at the very top of the facility that you could book for private use. Needless to say we absolutely LOVED this place.
Apart from the amazing hot spring baths, dinner was definitely the highlight of our stay. Ryokan dinners usually mirror kaiseki ryori (懐石料理), which is a traditional multi-course Japanese dinner. They have different ingredients depending on the season, and for our stay we chose the Shabu-Shabu, a hotpot dish of thinly sliced meat and vegetables boiled in water.
The next day, around 8 in the morning, we had a wonderful Japanese style breakfast, with multiple dishes with local and seasonal specialties. I'm not a big fan of tofu but I was surprised how delicious it was. I think this is called hiyayakko (冷奴), chilled tofu with toppings.
Then it was time to leave, but we didn’t want to ;_; All of the staff were so friendly and they came out to wave to us when we left. I want to go back again already!

[Beppu Movie 2 - My home away from home]
After making the first short film of Beppu, I realized that there are still a ton of footage that I wasn't able to include. So I made a new movie with the footage that would have been otherwise forgotten in my hard drive.
It has been sometime since I last visited Beppu. Missing it a lot like home these days. Making this movie brought back a lot of great memories I had there. Enjoy the movie! It should be more fun with earphones.
